His Menlo Park laboratory pioneered organised industrial research. He held more than a thousand US patents.

The words come from a poem Francis Scott Key wrote in 1814 after the bombardment of Fort McHenry. The song had already been widely used on official occasions.

In return the British released political prisoners and allowed Indians to make salt for their own use. Gandhi then attended the Second Round Table Conference in London.

The city of Wuhan was inundated and Nanjing was badly affected. Estimates of the death toll from drowning, famine and disease range from several hundred thousand to millions, which makes it one of the deadliest natural disasters on record.

The Admiralty agreed to review the cuts and the mutiny ended peacefully. News of it helped trigger the run on sterling that forced Britain off gold days later.

1931Mukden IncidentJapan stages a railway bombing to justify invading ManchuriaJapanese officers of the Kwantung Army set off a small explosive on the South Manchuria Railway near Mukden and blamed Chinese dissidents. Japan used the incident as a pretext to occupy Manchuria. The following year it set up the puppet state of Manchukuo there.
1931Britain abandons the gold standardSterling floats after a run on the poundHeavy withdrawals of gold during the financial crisis forced the National Government to suspend the convertibility of sterling into gold.
