1923 BC The curse -- the media invention The "Curse of the Pharaohs" -- the alleged supernatural revenge visited on those who open Tutankhamun's tomb -- is the most successful piece of journalistic invention in archaeological history. The curse is created by the British press in 1923, following Lord Carnarvon's death from an infected mosquito bite. Arthur Conan Doyle (author of Sherlock Holmes, and a committed spiritualist) tells the press that Carnarvon's death may have been caused by "elementals" created by Egyptian priests to guard the tomb. From this starting point, every subsequent death of anyone associated with the discovery is attributed to the curse. The facts: of the 22 people present at the official opening of the burial chamber in 1923, most lived to old age. Howard Carter, who is more exposed than anyone to the tomb's contents, lives until 1939 (16 years after the discovery). A 2002 study by the British Medical Journal finds no statistical evidence of elevated mortality among those present at the tomb opening. The tomb contains no written curse.
1922 BC 4 November 1922 -- the discovery Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb on 4 November 1922 is the most famous moment in the history of archaeology. Carter's diary records the discovery with professional restraint: "4 November. Discovered tomb under tomb of Ramesses VI. Investigated same and found seals intact." The full drama emerges in the subsequent days: the staircase reveals 16 steps; at the bottom is a sealed doorway bearing cartouche seals of the royal necropolis and cartouches of Tutankhamun; behind it is a rubble-filled corridor; at the end of the corridor is a second sealed doorway. On 26 November, Carter makes the hole: "As my eyes grew accustomed to the light, details of the room emerged slowly from the mist, strange animals, statues, and gold -- everywhere the glint of gold." The tomb has been slightly entered in antiquity (the necropolis police re-seal it) but its main chamber and burial suite are intact. Carter cables Lord Carnarvon: "At last have made wonderful discovery in Valley; a magnificent tomb with seals intact."
1341 BC – 1323 BC Ankhesenamun -- the wife left behind Ankhesenamun (c.1348-c.1322 BC), Tutankhamun's wife and half-sister (she is the third daughter of Akhenaten and Nefertiti), is one of the most poignant figures of the Amarna period. Born into the revolutionary court of her parents, she is married to the boy king who reverses everything her parents stood for. She bears two daughters (both stillborn -- their mummies are found in Tutankhamun's tomb, the smallest approximately 5 months' gestation). After Tutankhamun's death, she writes the extraordinary "Dakhamunzu letter" to the Hittite king Suppiluliuma I: "My husband has died and I have no son. They say about you that you have many sons. You might give me one of your sons to become my husband. I would not wish to take one of my subjects as a husband... I am afraid." Suppiluliuma sends a son (Zannanza); he is murdered at the Egyptian border. Ankhesenamun disappears from the record after marrying the elderly Ay.
1341 BC – 1323 BC Ay -- the man who buries the king Ay (active c.1362-1319 BC), the elderly official who serves throughout the Amarna period and its aftermath, performs the final rites for Tutankhamun -- depicted in the famous painting on the north wall of KV62 performing the Opening of the Mouth ceremony on Tutankhamun's mummy, dressed in the blue crown of the pharaoh (even though he is not yet pharaoh at this moment). Performing the burial rites is traditionally the responsibility of the deceased's son and heir -- by doing so, Ay implicitly claims the role of Tutankhamun's successor. He becomes pharaoh immediately after the burial (c.1323 BC), taking the widow Ankhesenamun as his wife (a woman at least 50 years his junior) to legitimise his rule. He reigns for only 4 years (c.1323-1319 BC) -- completing some of Tutankhamun's building projects at Karnak and Luxor and being buried in KV23 in the Valley of the Kings (a tomb prepared for Tutankhamun but redirected to Ay after the young king's premature death).
1341 BC – 1323 BC Horemheb -- the general who erases the past Horemheb (c.1321-1295 BC), the military general who serves under Akhenaten, Tutankhamun and Ay, becomes the last pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty -- and the most systematic eraser of the Amarna legacy. He declares himself the direct successor of Amenhotep III (skipping Akhenaten, Smenkhkare, Neferneferuaten, Tutankhamun and Ay), resets the regnal year count from his own accession, and begins the comprehensive damnatio memoriae of the Amarna pharaohs. He dismantles the Aten temples at Karnak, using their blocks (the "talatat") as fill in his own pylons. He erases Tutankhamun's and Ay's names from their monuments and replaces them with his own -- taking credit for the Restoration Stele and other post-Amarna restorations. His Great Edict (an extensive legal reform addressing corruption) is one of the most important administrative documents of the New Kingdom. He dies without an heir, nominating his vizier Paramessu (Ramesses I) as his successor -- founding the Nineteenth Dynasty.
1341 BC – 1323 BC KV62 -- the smallest royal tomb Tutankhamun's tomb KV62 is the smallest royal tomb in the Valley of the Kings -- four small rooms cut into the rock, the burial chamber barely large enough to contain the nested golden shrines. The tomb's small size suggests it was not originally intended for a king -- the standard theory is that it was prepared as a private tomb (possibly for Ay) and hastily adapted when Tutankhamun died unexpectedly at 18-19, before his own larger tomb (possibly WV23 -- Ay's actual tomb) was ready. Evidence for the hasty preparation: the walls of the burial chamber show signs of rapidly dried paint (mould growth in the paintings, suggesting fresh paint at the time of burial); several objects in the tomb are not made for Tutankhamun (including the second coffin and possibly the innermost coffin -- both originally made for a different individual, with the names modified); and the packing of the antechamber is chaotic, inconsistent with a carefully prepared royal burial.
1341 BC – 1323 BC KV62 and the "hidden room" -- the ongoing mystery In 2015, Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves proposes that Tutankhamun's tomb (KV62) contains a hidden chamber -- a sealed room that may contain the intact burial of Nefertiti or another Amarna queen, accessible through a concealed doorway in the northern wall of the burial chamber. His evidence: high-resolution photography of the burial chamber walls shows straight lines and subtle colour differences that could indicate a plastered-over doorway. Egyptian authorities commission ground-penetrating radar surveys (2016, 2018) that give contradictory results -- the first survey supports the hidden room theory; the second does not. A third survey (2020) also fails to confirm it. The hypothesis has not been tested by physical investigation (opening the wall) because of the risks to the existing tomb. As of 2026, the hidden room remains unconfirmed -- one of the most tantalising unsolved mysteries in Egyptology.
1341 BC – 1323 BC Lord Carnarvon -- the patron who almost missed it George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon (1866-1923), Howard Carter's patron and the co-discoverer of Tutankhamun's tomb, is one of the most poignant figures in the history of archaeology -- the man who funds a decade of unsuccessful searching, comes within weeks of giving up, and then dies five months after the discovery before seeing its full extent. Carnarvon is an English aristocrat and racing car enthusiast whose poor health (after a serious automobile accident) leads him to winter in Egypt and take up Egyptology as a hobby. He funds Carter's excavations in the Valley of the Kings from 1914 to 1922. In 1922, facing escalating costs and no major discovery, he informs Carter he is ending the funding. Carter persuades him to fund one last season. Carnarvon arrives in Egypt to witness the opening of the tomb and catches a mosquito bite on the cheek that becomes infected; he dies in Cairo on 5 April 1923 -- five months after the discovery, before the burial chamber is fully cleared.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The Dakhamunzu letter -- a queen's desperate plea The "Dakhamunzu letter" (Dakhamunzu is the Hittite rendering of the Egyptian title "Ta Hemet Nesu" -- "the king's wife"), sent by Tutankhamun's widow to the Hittite king Suppiluliuma I after the young pharaoh's death, is one of the most extraordinary documents of the ancient world. The queen (identified as Ankhesenamun by most Egyptologists) writes: "My husband has died and I have no son. They say about you that you have many sons. You might give me one of your sons to become my husband. I would not wish to take one of my subjects as a husband... I am afraid." Suppiluliuma is initially sceptical -- such a request is unprecedented in 3,000 years of Egyptian history. He sends an envoy to verify the claim; the queen repeats it. Suppiluliuma sends a son (Zannanza); the prince is murdered at the Egyptian border -- almost certainly by the Egyptian military faction (Ay, Horemheb) who oppose a foreign king of Egypt.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The Egyptian Museum Cairo -- home of the treasures The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, Cairo (built 1902, the world's largest collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts) is the permanent home of Tutankhamun's treasures -- the largest, most important and most visited collection in the museum. The Tutankhamun rooms (Room 3-4 on the upper floor) contain the golden death mask, the three coffins, the canopic equipment, the throne and hundreds of other objects from the tomb. The museum's design (a vast, hot, crowded 19th-century building with inadequate lighting and labelling) has long been considered inadequate for the treasures it contains. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) at Giza, under construction since 2002 and partially opened in stages from 2021 to 2023, is designed specifically to display the Tutankhamun collection alongside the broader Egyptian archaeological heritage -- with the golden mask displayed in a specially designed gallery. The GEM's full opening marks the most significant improvement in the display of ancient Egyptian objects in a century.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The Tutankhamun exhibitions -- the travelling king The Tutankhamun travelling exhibitions are the most visited art exhibitions in history. The 1972-1979 world tour ("Treasures of Tutankhamun") visits 7 countries and is seen by approximately 8 million people -- more than any previous art exhibition. The London exhibition at the British Museum (1972) breaks all records with 1.6 million visitors. The later 2004-2011 "Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs" tour visits 10 North American and European cities and is seen by approximately 8.5 million people. The 2019-2024 "King Tut" exhibition ("Tutankhamun: His Tomb and His Treasures") uses full-size replicas of the tomb and its objects to avoid risking the originals. The exhibitions make Tutankhamun the most widely seen artefacts in history -- introducing ancient Egypt to millions who have never visited a museum. The cultural impact of these exhibitions on public awareness of Egyptian history is immeasurable.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The Tutankhamun statues -- 30 guardian figures The antechamber and burial chamber of Tutankhamun's tomb contain approximately 30 wooden statues of the king -- representing him in various divine forms, as a hunter, as a harpoon-thrower, and as a guardian figure. The two life-size "guardian statues" (also called "sentry statues" or "ka statues") flanking the sealed doorway to the burial chamber are among the most dramatic objects in the tomb -- tall black figures (2 metres high) with gold kilts, headdresses and sandals, holding a staff and a mace, gazing ahead with gilded eyes. These figures represent the king's ka (vital force) guarding his body. The smaller gilded statuettes (depicting Tutankhamun on a black panther, on a reed float, on a skiff throwing a harpoon) are among the finest examples of New Kingdom small-scale sculpture -- their scale no larger than a shoebox but their craftsmanship equal to any monumental work.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The antechamber -- the first wonderful things Carter's antechamber -- the first room entered on 26 November 1922 -- is the most dramatically remembered archaeological space in history. Its contents, as Carter first sees them by candlelight through the small hole: three gilded animal-couch couches (lion, hippopotamus/Ammit, cow) stacked against the far wall; between and beneath the couches, a jumble of boxes, caskets, alabaster vessels, walking sticks and chairs; two life-size gilded wooden sentinal statues of the king facing each other across the room; and everywhere the glint of gold. Carter's famous response to Lord Carnarvon's question ("Can you see anything?") -- "Yes, wonderful things" -- is the most quoted line in the history of archaeology. The antechamber's contents alone (cleared between November 1922 and May 1923) would have made the discovery extraordinary; the burial chamber beyond contains the golden shrines and the mummy.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The black shrine -- naos of the gods Among the finest objects in the treasury is the black wooden naos (shrine) whose doors are opened to reveal 18 gilded statuettes of gods and goddesses -- each figure approximately 50-70cm high, made of gilded wood with fine detail, standing in the traditional ritual poses. The statuettes include: Ptah in his shroud-like garment; Thoth with his ibis head; Neith; Serket; and other protective deities. The naos itself is a miniature temple in black wood, its surfaces decorated with gold hieroglyphs of protective spells. It stands on a gilded sledge (for processional use). The quality of the statuettes -- their gold surfaces barely tarnished after 3,250 years -- is a testament to the skill of the Amarna-era craftsmen, who execute these exquisite small-scale works in a period of artistic revolution. The naos and its statuettes are among the finest small-scale sculptures of the New Kingdom.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The chariots -- speed and status The 12 chariots found dismantled in Tutankhamun's antechamber and annexe are the finest example of ancient Egyptian vehicle technology -- elaborately decorated with gold, silver and leather, their wheels and axles still functional after 3,250 years. The chariots are of two types: six state chariots (heavily decorated with gold and hunting scenes -- display vehicles for ceremonial use) and six functional war chariots (lighter, less ornate, with leather fittings). The war chariots show signs of actual use -- wear on the wheels and axles consistent with chariot racing or military training. Several reliefs in the tomb show Tutankhamun in his chariot, bow drawn, charging enemy soldiers and lions -- idealised images of the warrior-pharaoh that contrast sharply with his actual physical condition (club foot, bone disease). The chariots provide the most complete picture of New Kingdom chariot technology ever found and are key evidence for the Egyptian military's primary offensive weapon.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The gilded shrines -- nested splendour The four nested gilded shrines that enclose Tutankhamun's sarcophagus are the most dramatic objects in the burial chamber -- filling virtually the entire room, leaving only 60cm clearance between the outermost shrine and the walls. Dismantling them reveals a series of increasingly ornate golden boxes, each bearing different religious texts and scenes. The outermost shrine (5.08 x 3.28 x 2.75 metres) is coated in gold sheet and blue faience and bears scenes from the Book of the Dead. Inside it, sealed with ebony bolts, are three more shrines (each progressively smaller and more ornate). The fourth and innermost shrine, bearing a continuous frieze of protective figures, encloses the red quartzite sarcophagus. The nested structure -- shrine within shrine within shrine -- reflects the Egyptian architectural tradition of progressive revelation, from the ordinary outer world to the increasingly sacred inner world of the divine.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The golden death mask -- the most recognisable artefact The golden death mask of Tutankhamun (Egyptian Museum, Cairo) is the most recognisable artefact of the ancient world -- a solid gold face mask weighing 10.23kg, inlaid with lapis lazuli, carnelian, quartz, obsidian, turquoise and coloured glass, placed over the head and shoulders of the king's innermost mummy. The mask shows the young king in the nemes headdress, with the uraeus (cobra goddess Wadjet) and the vulture (goddess Nekhbet) on the forehead, a false beard attached to the chin, and eyes made of obsidian and quartz with blue glass eyebrows and outlines. The face shows a young man of approximately 18-19 with full lips, wide almond eyes and a slightly receding chin -- consistent with the CT scan of his mummy. The mask has become the defining image of ancient Egypt and is one of the most visited artefacts in the world.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The iron dagger -- from a meteorite Among the objects in Tutankhamun's tomb is a dagger with an iron blade -- exceptional because iron smelting is not practiced in Egypt in the 14th century BC (iron technology only develops in the Near East c.1200-1000 BC). Chemical analysis (2016) of the blade reveals it is made from meteoritic iron -- iron from a meteorite, identified by its unusually high nickel and cobalt content. Meteoritic iron (called "iron from the sky" in Egyptian texts) is known in Egypt from the Predynastic period, when small beads are made from it. The dagger's blade is the largest and finest meteoritic iron object known from ancient Egypt. Its gold handle and rock crystal pommel suggest it is a prestige object. The dagger's presence in the tomb confirms that the Egyptians knew that meteoritic iron -- a magical material that fell from the sky -- was different from ordinary stone and bronze, and valued it as such.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The mummy of Tutankhamun -- damaged and revealed The mummy of Tutankhamun is one of the most studied in Egyptology -- and one of the most damaged, largely through the actions of Howard Carter's team in removing the golden mask, which is stuck to the innermost coffin with hardened unguents. Carter removes the mask in sections (a decision he later regrets) and detaches the head from the body. The mummy's CT scan (2005) reveals: a young man of 18-19; bone age consistent with the historical record; a broken leg (pre or perimortem -- ambiguous); and no evidence of murder. The DNA study (2010) identifies malaria and bone disease as the likely cause of death. The mummy remains in KV62, in a climate-controlled case -- the only pharaoh's mummy still in its original tomb. The mummy's condition continues to deteriorate due to humidity from the 600-1,000 tourists who visit daily, raising conservation concerns that are still not fully resolved.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The new Grand Egyptian Museum -- the final home The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) at Giza, 10 years in construction and partially opened from 2021 (with further stages opening in 2022-2023), is designed specifically to provide Tutankhamun's treasures with a setting worthy of their importance. The museum's Tutankhamun gallery (approximately 7,000 square metres) contains all 5,398 objects from the tomb displayed together for the first time -- previously the collection was split between the Egyptian Museum (main objects) and storage. The GEM itself (480,000 square metres, the largest museum in the world devoted to a single civilisation's artefacts) contains approximately 100,000 objects in total, with the Tutankhamun gallery as its centrepiece. The golden death mask is displayed in a dedicated gallery -- the first time the mask has been properly illuminated and displayed since Carter removed it from the tomb in 1925. The GEM represents the final chapter of the Tutankhamun story: 3,250 years after the burial, the objects are properly housed at last.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The painted burial chamber -- the last journey The burial chamber of Tutankhamun's tomb (KV62) is the smallest and most intimate in the Valley of the Kings -- barely large enough to contain the four nested golden shrines that occupy most of its floor space. The walls are painted in a style unusual for the period: the north wall shows the Opening of the Mouth ceremony (Ay, dressed as pharaoh, performing the rite on Tutankhamun's mummy); the east wall shows the funeral procession (the mummy on a sled, pulled by courtiers); the south wall shows Tutankhamun greeted by gods in the afterlife; and the west wall bears a rare continuous frieze from the Amduat (the Book of What is in the Underworld). The paintings show signs of hasty work -- the paint is applied quickly on a wet plaster that has not fully dried. Brown spots (probably Aspergillus niger mould) appear throughout the paintings -- evidence of organic material (possibly fruit offerings) present when the tomb was sealed.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The scarab necklace -- the sky above Thebes One of the most scientifically remarkable objects in Tutankhamun's tomb is a scarab in a breast ornament found on his mummy -- a pale yellow-green glass scarab of unusual composition. Chemical analysis (1998, by Italian geologist Vincenzo de Michele) shows the glass is not of Egyptian manufacture but is natural silica glass (SiO2) formed approximately 29 million years ago by an ancient meteorite impact (or possibly a comet airburst) in the Libyan Desert -- the so-called "Libyan Desert Glass." This hypersil glass, found in an area of approximately 6,500 square km in the Egyptian Western Desert, was apparently collected by ancient Egyptians (who used it for arrow tips and jewellery in the Neolithic period). The glass was carved by an Egyptian craftsman into the scarab shape and set in gold. The fact that a carved piece of 29-million-year-old meteoritic glass forms the centrepiece of Tutankhamun's most personal jewellery is one of the most unexpected connections between cosmological and human history.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The shabtis -- army of the afterlife Tutankhamun's tomb contains 413 shabtis (servant figurines designed to perform agricultural and manual labour for the deceased in the afterlife when called upon by the gods) -- the largest collection found in any Egyptian royal tomb. The shabtis range from crude to exquisite: the finest are gilded wood, carved with the king's features and bearing miniature agricultural tools (hoes, picks, baskets); others are simple faience figures. Each shabti is activated by a spell from the Book of the Dead (Chapter 6 -- the "Shabti Spell"): when called upon to work, the shabti answers "Here I am!" and performs the task. The idea is both practical and touching: the king needs 365 worker shabtis (one for each day of the year) plus 36 overseer shabtis (one for each 10-day week, to supervise the workers) plus specific shabtis for particular tasks. The mathematics of afterlife labour management is entirely Egyptian.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The still-born daughters -- heartbreak in the tomb Among the most poignant objects in Tutankhamun's tomb are two small wooden coffins found in the treasury, each containing a smaller coffin, and inside each of those a tiny mummified female foetus. The larger mummy (approximately 8-9 months of gestational age, approximately 36cm long) is designated "317a"; the smaller (approximately 5-6 months, approximately 25cm) is "317b." Both are female. CT scanning (2008, 2011) reveals that 317a has a condition consistent with Sprengel's deformity (congenital elevation of the scapula) and scoliosis -- genetic abnormalities consistent with parental inbreeding, like those found in Tutankhamun's own skeleton. DNA analysis suggests these are the daughters of Tutankhamun and Ankhesenamun. They are the only children Tutankhamun is known to have -- both stillborn. The presence of their mummies in his tomb (rather than a separate burial) reflects a father's desire to keep his children near him in the afterlife.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The three coffins -- gold within gold Tutankhamun's mummy is enclosed in three nested anthropoid (human-shaped) coffins placed inside a stone sarcophagus inside four nested gilded shrines. The outermost coffin (2.24 metres long) is gilded wood decorated with feather (rishi) pattern in coloured glass. The second coffin (2.04 metres) is also gilded wood, decorated with inlaid coloured glass in a more elaborate pattern. The innermost coffin (1.88 metres) is solid gold -- 110.4kg of sheet gold -- decorated with inscriptions from the Book of the Dead and inlaid with coloured glass and semi-precious stones. The three coffins are nested so precisely that a fraction of a millimetre's difference in measurement would prevent them from fitting together. Carter describes opening the innermost coffin: "The lid was lifted. It was a sight surpassing all precedent in archaeological discovery... a gold effigy of the young boy-king."
1341 BC – 1323 BC The tomb's contents -- 5,398 objects The contents of Tutankhamun's tomb (KV62) are the most extensive and best-preserved collection of ancient Egyptian objects ever found -- 5,398 items packed into four small rooms (the antechamber, the annexe, the burial chamber and the treasury). The most significant: the golden death mask; three nested anthropoid coffins (the innermost of solid gold weighing 110.4kg); four nested gilded shrines enclosing the sarcophagus; a gold canopic chest containing four miniature gold coffins with the king's mummified organs; two golden shrines with gold statuettes; three ritual couches in the shapes of animals (hippopotamus goddess Ammit, lion, and cow); 130 walking sticks and canes; 12 chariots; 30 arrows; a trumpet (the world's oldest playable musical instrument); a stone scarab necklace found on the mummy's chest; and thousands of smaller objects -- jewellery, shabtis, clothing, wine jars, food vessels and personal items.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The treasury -- the most sacred room The treasury, separated from the burial chamber by a wooden shrine flanked by a lifesize painted statue of Anubis-on-a-shrine and stacked with 19 model boats, contains the most sacred objects in the tomb -- the canopic equipment, the naos shrine with gold statuettes, and dozens of wooden model ships. The canopic equipment: a magnificent gilded shrine containing an alabaster canopic chest, its four compartments sealed by stoppers carved as miniature portraits of the king. Inside each compartment is a tiny gold coffin containing the king's mummified organs (liver, lungs, stomach, intestines). Surrounding the canopic shrine are 22 black wooden model boats -- ritual objects for the king's journey through the underworld. Standing before the shrine, on a portable carrying sledge, is the life-size gilt wood and plaster figure of Anubis -- the jackal god of mummification -- wrapped in a linen shawl dated to Year 7 of Akhenaten's reign, which had not been unwrapped since the burial.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The trumpets of Tutankhamun -- the oldest music Among the objects in Tutankhamun's tomb are two bronze and silver trumpets -- the world's oldest playable musical instruments. The bronze trumpet (44cm long) has a modern reproduction mouthpiece; the silver trumpet (58cm) is the larger and more elaborate. On 16 April 1939, in a BBC broadcast heard by an estimated 150 million people worldwide, the trumpets are played publicly for the first time in 3,250 years -- the musician Rex Keating playing both instruments in the Egyptian Museum. Military bands in Egypt have since played them on ceremonial occasions. Remarkably, military conflict is said to occur within days of each playing: the 1939 playing precedes World War II; a 1967 playing precedes the Six-Day War; a 1990 playing precedes the Gulf War. Whether coincidence or folk belief, the trumpets' association with military conflict reflects their original function -- Egyptian military trumpets were used to signal troop movements in battle.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The usurped coffins -- objects not made for Tutankhamun Several major objects in Tutankhamun's tomb show signs of having been made for a different individual and modified for his use -- evidence of the hasty nature of his burial preparation. The most clearly modified: the second coffin (2.04 metres, gilded wood with elaborate inlaid decoration) has a face that scholars have identified as originally portraying a female -- the features have been modified but traces of the original face remain under later work. The innermost mummy board (the layer of gilded plaster directly on the mummy) similarly shows features that may have been modified. The canopic coffinettes (four miniature gold coffins containing the king's organs in the canopic chest) bear portraits that differ from the standard Tutankhamun portraiture -- they may have been made for Neferneferuaten (the mystery pharaoh between Akhenaten and Tutankhamun). These usurped objects are evidence that, when the young king died unexpectedly, his funeral equipment was assembled from whatever was available -- including objects originally prepared for his predecessors.
1341 BC – 1323 BC The walking sticks -- evidence of disability The 130 walking sticks and canes found in Tutankhamun's tomb are one of the most medically significant collections of objects in Egyptology -- they constitute direct evidence that the young king needed walking aids throughout his life. Walking sticks are not unusual in Egyptian tombs (they are status symbols and ritual objects as well as practical aids), but 130 is an extraordinary number -- and analysis of the sticks shows extensive wear patterns consistent with actual use, not merely ceremonial deposition. The CT scan's finding of club foot (bilateral talipes equinovarus) and Köhler disease II (avascular necrosis of the second metatarsal in the left foot) explains why a young man of 18-19 needs so many walking sticks: his foot conditions would have made walking without support painful or impossible. The contrast between the tomb's idealised reliefs (showing Tutankhamun charging in his chariot, trampling enemies, hunting lions) and the physical reality implied by the walking sticks is one of the most poignant in ancient history.
1341 BC – 1323 BC Tutankhamun (c.1341–1323 BC) -- the boy king Tutankhamun (c.1341-1323 BC) is the most famous pharaoh in history -- not because of his reign (minor, 9 years, by a child who dies at 18-19) but because his tomb in the Valley of the Kings was discovered essentially intact by Howard Carter on 4 November 1922 -- the greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century. 1341 BC – 1323 BC Tutankhamun in popular culture -- the eternal boy king Tutankhamun is the ancient Egyptian pharaoh most familiar to the modern world -- his golden face appearing on everything from museum gift shop reproductions to chocolate boxes, Halloween costumes, pop songs and advertising. Steve Martin's 1978 comedy song "King Tut" (a mock tribute: "Born in Arizona, moved to Babylonia, King Tut") reaches number 17 in the US charts. 1341 BC – 1323 BC Tutankhamun's cause of death -- the mystery Tutankhamun's cause of death has been disputed since his mummy was first X-rayed in 1968. The X-ray shows bone fragments in the skull -- initially interpreted as evidence of murder (a blow to the back of the head). CT scanning (2005) contradicts this: the bone fragments are loose and probably the result of post-mortem handling, not an antemortem blow. The 2010 DNA study identifies malaria (Plasmodium falciparum, multiple strains -- suggesting repeated infections) and Köhler disease II (avascular necrosis of a bone in the foot) as the most likely contributors. The current medical consensus: a combination of malaria, bone disease and possibly the complications of a fractured leg (found in the CT scan) -- the underlying cause being the immunosuppression from his genetic disorders that made each infection more serious. He is not murdered; he dies of accumulated illness at 18-19 -- a young man whose body simply cannot sustain the demands placed on it.
1341 BC – 1332 BC Tutankhamun's childhood -- the Amarna prince Tutankhamun is born c.1341 BC, probably at Amarna, as Tutankhaten -- "Living image of the Aten" -- the royal name that identifies him as a child of the Amarna religious revolution. His parents are disputed but DNA analysis (2010) suggests his father is the KV55 mummy (almost certainly Akhenaten) and his mother is the "Younger Lady" mummy from KV35 (an unknown daughter of Amenhotep III -- a full sister of Akhenaten). He grows up in Amarna during the height of the revolution, surrounded by the Aten theology, the naturalistic art style and the revolutionary court of his father and Nefertiti. He presumably witnesses the end of the Amarna period (c.1336 BC), the brief transitional reigns of Smenkhkare and Neferneferuaten, and comes to the throne himself (c.1332 BC) at approximately 8-9 years old -- under the regency of the officials Ay and Horemheb.
1341 BC – 1323 BC Tutankhamun's food and wine -- eating in the afterlife The food and drink provisions in Tutankhamun's tomb are the most extensively studied ancient dietary evidence ever found -- 116 baskets of food and drink analysed by the German Institute of Archaeology Cairo. The contents: 26 jars of wine (labelled with vintages -- the oldest from Year 5 of Tutankhamun's reign, the youngest from Year 9 -- his last year); 30 jars of date wine; joints of beef, duck, goose and pigeon; bread in multiple forms; olives and olive oil; dried fruits (figs, dates, grapes, persimmons); spices (cumin, coriander, fenugreek); honey; and cheese. The wine labels identify the vineyard, the vintner and the vintage year -- making them the oldest wine labels in the world. The beef joints are from animals selected for their quality and sacrificed specifically for the tomb. The food provisions reflect both the Egyptian belief that the dead require real sustenance and the high quality of the royal kitchen.
1341 BC – 1323 BC Tutankhamun's furniture -- craftsmanship for eternity The furniture in Tutankhamun's tomb is the finest and most complete collection of ancient Egyptian furniture ever found -- chairs, footstools, beds, headrests and chests made from gilded wood, ebony, ivory and faience, their craftsmanship at the highest level of New Kingdom woodworking. The most celebrated pieces: the golden throne (with its intimate Amarna-style scene); a ceremonial chair in red-painted wood with ivory and ebony inlay; a folding bed-chair; four ritual couches in the form of composite animals (Ammit, lion and cow); multiple wooden chests with ivory and ebony inlay containing the king's linen and clothing. The headrests (small supports to keep the sleeper's head off the ground) include one of solid gold, one of blue faience and several of ivory. The furniture provides the most complete picture of New Kingdom elite material culture ever recovered -- including a chest containing Tutankhamun's actual linen robes, still folded as they were placed at burial.
1341 BC – 1323 BC Tutankhamun's games -- leisure in the afterlife Tutankhamun's tomb contains an extraordinary collection of games and leisure objects -- evidence of the young king's personal interests and of the Egyptian belief that the afterlife should replicate the pleasures of earthly life. The most important: four senet game boards (senet is the most popular board game in ancient Egypt, played throughout pharaonic history -- a race game with spiritual significance, the winner believed to gain the protection of the god Thoth); a "Game of 20 squares" (an ancient Near Eastern race game); and a "snake game" (one of the oldest board games in history, attested from the Early Dynastic period). The finest senet board (ebony and ivory inlaid, on a carved base in the form of a lion, with an ivory drawer for the playing pieces) is one of the finest objects of its type from the ancient world. The presence of multiple game sets reflects both the young king's personal enthusiasm for games and the standard provision of entertainment objects in elite Egyptian burials.
1341 BC – 1323 BC Tutankhamun's golden throne -- the art of two worlds The golden throne of Tutankhamun (Egyptian Museum, Cairo) is one of the most extraordinary objects from the ancient world -- and a unique document of the Amarna transition. Made of wood covered in gold sheet and silver, inlaid with coloured glass, faience and semi-precious stones, it depicts on its back panel a scene of extraordinary intimacy: Tutankhamun seated while his wife Ankhesenamun applies ointment to his shoulder, under the rays of the Aten sun disc (the Aten's rays ending in human hands offering the ankh of life). The scene is in the Amarna artistic style -- naturalistic, intimate, showing husband and wife as physical equals. Most remarkable: the disc above them is labelled "the Aten" -- this throne is made in the Amarna period, before the name change, and preserves the Amarna theology on an object buried in the tomb of the pharaoh who reverses the Amarna revolution. The throne is evidence that the reversal is slower and more complex than the official record suggests.
1341 BC – 1323 BC Tutankhamun's health -- the sickly king The CT scan of Tutankhamun's mummy (2005, led by Zahi Hawass) and subsequent DNA analysis (2010) reveal a young man of 18-19 whose health was severely compromised from birth. Identified conditions: club foot (he needs the 130 walking sticks in his tomb); Köhler disease II (bone death in the left foot, extremely painful); scoliosis; malaria (he tests positive for Plasmodium falciparum -- the most dangerous form); and multiple bone fractures (including a severely broken leg found in the CT scan, which may have contributed to his death). The DNA analysis identifies excessive inbreeding (his parents are almost certainly full siblings) as the likely cause of these congenital conditions. The image of Tutankhamun as a vigorous young warrior (as depicted in his tomb reliefs) is almost certainly idealised -- in reality he may have spent much of his brief reign in significant pain, dependent on walking sticks, and periodically incapacitated by malaria.
1341 BC – 1323 BC Tutankhamun's jewellery -- masterworks in miniature The jewellery found on Tutankhamun's mummy and in the tomb is the largest and finest collection of ancient Egyptian jewellery ever discovered -- 143 objects placed directly on the mummy's wrappings plus hundreds more in boxes and chests. The most celebrated: the large scarab necklace (a gold winged scarab with a lapis lazuli scarab body, holding a crescent moon and a full moon -- one of the finest examples of cloisonné work in the ancient world); the solid gold breast plate (showing the pharaoh as a sphinx trampling his enemies); multiple gold pectoral ornaments inlaid with coloured glass; gold bangles; gold rings; and the famous gold fan handle inscribed with a scene of Tutankhamun hunting ostriches. The feathers from those ostriches are found in the fan -- still recognisable after 3,250 years, though they crumble to dust when touched.
1341 BC – 1323 BC Tutankhamun's legacy -- the boy who changed everything Tutankhamun's legacy is not his reign (minor and brief) or his historical significance (modest) but his tomb -- and what that tomb has done for humanity's understanding of and engagement with the ancient world. No other single archaeological discovery has done more to make ancient Egypt accessible, to stimulate interest in the ancient world, to fund Egyptian archaeology, or to inspire popular culture. The discovery transforms Egyptology from an academic discipline into a global phenomenon; it makes Howard Carter the most famous archaeologist in history; it makes the Egyptian Museum in Cairo one of the most visited in the world; it generates billions of dollars of tourism income for Egypt over a century. The military: Tutankhamun or his general Horemheb conducts or oversees campaigns against Nubia and Canaan -- reliefs at Karnak (the "Colonnade Hall" processional scenes) show the restoration of the traditional military. The religious: the Restoration Stele and multiple building projects at Karnak and Luxor (including completion of the hypostyle hall and the sphinx avenue from Karnak to Luxor). The diplomatic: the exchange of letters with the Hittite king Suppiluliuma (including the extraordinary Dakhamunzu letter from his widow after his death). By the time he dies at 18-19, Tutankhamun has -- under guidance -- effectively ended the Amarna experiment and set Egypt on the path back to traditional kingship. His reign is not merely transitional: it is the decisive turning point.
1341 BC – 1323 BC Tutankhamun's significance -- the paradox of fame The paradox of Tutankhamun is that his fame is entirely disproportionate to his historical importance. He is famous because of what was found in his tomb; his tomb is intact because he was relatively unimportant (his tomb is small, its entrance is covered by later construction, the tomb robbers focus on larger and more prominent tombs). A historically more important pharaoh -- Thutmose III (who campaigns 17 times in the Near East and creates the largest Egyptian empire), Amenhotep III (who presides over Egypt's most prosperous reign) or Seti I (who builds the finest temple in Egypt at Abydos) -- would have been buried in a larger, more visible tomb that would certainly have been robbed. 1341 BC – 1323 BC Tutankhamun's tomb -- why it survived The survival of Tutankhamun's tomb intact (or nearly so -- it was entered twice in antiquity and re-sealed) is the result of a historical accident. After its completion (c.1323 BC), the tomb's entrance was covered by workers' huts built for the construction of Ramesses VI's tomb directly above. Over centuries, rubble washed down from the hillsides above covered the huts and the tomb entrance. The later, larger tombs of Ramesses VI and others attracted the attention of ancient tomb robbers; Tutankhamun's small, inconspicuous tomb was missed. When Carter finds it in 1922, he discovers the evidence of two ancient break-ins (the tomb is robbed twice, within perhaps 15 years of burial, and re-sealed both times by necropolis officials) -- but the burial chamber and the treasury beyond the golden shrine are untouched. The objects removed in the break-ins are relatively small and of lower value; the golden coffins, the shrines and the death mask are all found as placed.
1341 BC – 1323 BC Tutankhamun's ultimate significance -- a window into Egypt Tutankhamun's ultimate significance is as a window -- the most complete window that archaeology has ever opened -- into ancient Egyptian material culture at the height of the New Kingdom. The 5,398 objects in his tomb represent every category of Egyptian luxury production: goldsmithing, inlay work, woodworking, glassmaking, textile production, leatherwork, boatbuilding, chariotry, weaponry, musical instrument making, game manufacturing, cosmetics, wine production, bread making and food preservation. Together they constitute the most complete single-site archaeological record of any ancient culture's elite material world. The objects' preservation (in a sealed, dark, consistently dry environment for 3,250 years) means they survive in conditions that allow scientific analysis unavailable for objects found in the open air. Every decade brings new discoveries from the collection: the meteoritic glass scarab (1996), the malaria DNA (2010), the iron dagger's meteoritic origin (2016). Tutankhamun will continue to reveal secrets for generations to come.
1332 BC Ascending the throne -- the child pharaoh Tutankhamun becomes pharaoh at approximately 8-9 years old (c.1332 BC) -- too young to rule effectively, requiring the guidance of senior officials. The two dominant figures: Ay (titled "God's Father," an official of great experience who serves under Akhenaten and who is probably Nefertiti's father or uncle); and Horemheb (Commander-in-Chief of the army, the most powerful military figure in Egypt). Within the first year of his reign, Tutankhamun changes his name (from Tutankhaten to Tutankhamun) and his wife's name (from Ankhesenpaaten to Ankhesenamun) -- the "Aten" element replaced by "Amun" in both cases. He moves the court from Amarna back to Memphis and Thebes. He issues the Restoration Stele -- declaring the traditional temples restored and the gods appeased. The counter-revolution is under way, guided by Ay and Horemheb acting in the young king's name.
1332 BC – 1323 BC Howard Carter -- the man who found the king Howard Carter (1874-1939) is the archaeologist who discovers Tutankhamun's tomb (KV62) on 4 November 1922 -- one of the greatest moments in the history of archaeology and one of the most celebrated in popular culture. Carter, working under the patronage of Lord Carnarvon since 1917, spends 6 years systematically excavating the Valley of the Kings, convinced by the discovery of seals bearing Tutankhamun's name that the king's tomb is yet to be found. On 4 November 1922 his workers discover the first step of the tomb's descending staircase. On 26 November 1922, Carter makes a small hole in the sealed inner doorway -- the famous moment when Lord Carnarvon asks if he can see anything and Carter replies: "Yes, wonderful things." The clearance of the tomb takes 10 years (1922-1932), during which Carter meticulously records and conserves 5,398 objects -- the most careful large-scale archaeological excavation of its era.
1332 BC – 1323 BC The Restoration Stele -- reversing the revolution The Restoration Stele of Tutankhamun (c.1332 BC), found at Karnak and now in the Cairo Museum, is the foundational document of the post-Amarna counter-revolution. Its description of the Amarna period as a time of divine abandonment -- the temples in ruins, the gods gone, the land in chaos -- is the most vivid ancient account of the Amarna period as experienced by its opponents. Its promise of restoration -- new statues cast in gold, new temple staff appointed, the Opet Festival restored, Nubian and Canaanite tribute redirected to the temples -- is both a policy document and a propaganda statement, reassuring the priestly establishment that the Amarna experiment is definitively over. The stele is later usurped by Horemheb, who replaces Tutankhamun's name with his own -- one of the earliest examples of the Amarna-era erasure continuing into the post-Amarna period. The stele's usurpation by Horemheb means that for most of modern history, its credit was given to him rather than to Tutankhamun.
1922 – 1932 Clearing the tomb -- 10 years of work Howard Carter's clearance of Tutankhamun's tomb (1922-1932) is the most meticulous large-scale archaeological excavation of the early 20th century -- 10 years of painstaking work to record, conserve and remove 5,398 objects from four small rooms. Carter's method: every object is photographed in situ, drawn to scale, numbered, described in the field catalogue, wrapped in cotton wool and tissue, packed in padded crates and transported to Cairo. The antechamber alone takes from November 1922 to May 1923 to clear. The burial chamber is not entered until February 1923 -- and the innermost coffin not opened until October 1925. The conservation challenges are enormous: objects that have been undisturbed for 3,250 years are fragile; many are stuck together; some are already decomposing when found. Carter's conservation work, using techniques developed specifically for this project, sets the standard for all subsequent Egyptian archaeological excavations.
