Nick Cave Timeline

Nick Cave 33

Nick Cave Is Born Born in Warracknabeal, Victoria, Australia Nicholas Edward Cave is born on 22 September 1957 in the small town of Warracknabeal, Victoria, Australia, the third of four children of Colin Cave, an English teacher, and Dawn Cave, a school librarian. The family later moves to the regional city of Wangaratta, where Cave is raised amid a household steeped in literature and classical music. His early exposure to his father's love of novelists such as Dostoevsky and Nabokov leaves a lasting imprint on the literary sensibility of his later songwriting.
Forms The Boys Next Door Formation of his first band in Melbourne While attending Caulfield Grammar School in Melbourne, Cave forms The Boys Next Door with schoolfriends Mick Harvey, Tracy Pew and Phill Calvert, later joined by guitarist Rowland S. Howard. The group plays an aggressive, theatrical brand of rock influenced by glam and early punk, quickly building a reputation on Melbourne's inner-city club circuit. The lineup and creative partnership forged here, particularly with Harvey, becomes the foundation for Cave's entire subsequent career.
Death of Colin Cave Cave's father dies in a car accident Cave's father Colin, a teacher who had introduced him to serious literature and encouraged his creative ambitions, is killed in a car accident on 5 July 1978. Cave, then twenty years old, later describes learning of his father's death as the defining moment of his young adulthood, one that intensified both his rebelliousness and his lifelong preoccupation with mortality, guilt and religious imagery. The loss becomes a recurring undercurrent in his songwriting for decades afterward.
The Birthday Party Forms and Relocates to London Band renamed, moves to the UK The Boys Next Door rename themselves The Birthday Party and relocate first to London and then briefly to West Berlin, chasing a post-punk scene more receptive to their increasingly abrasive sound. Their London years produce a run of ferocious, discordant records, including "Prayers on Fire" and "Junkyard", built around Rowland S. Howard's shrieking guitar and Cave's unhinged, preacher-like vocal delivery. The band earns a reputation as one of the most extreme and uncompromising live acts of the era, while Cave's growing heroin use begins to shape both his life and his art.
The Birthday Party Disbands End of Cave's first major band Creative tensions, drug use and exhaustion lead The Birthday Party to split in 1983, shortly after relocating to West Berlin. The breakup closes out Cave's formative post-punk period but frees him to pursue a more expansive, literary songwriting style. Several members, including Mick Harvey and Barry Adamson, follow Cave directly into his next project.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Formed Debut album "From Her to Eternity" released Cave forms Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in Berlin with Mick Harvey, Barry Adamson, Blixa Bargeld of Einstürzende Neubauten, and later Thomas Wydler. The group's debut album, "From Her to Eternity", is released in 1984 and immediately establishes a darker, more controlled sound than The Birthday Party, built around piano, cinematic arrangements and Cave's increasingly narrative lyrics. The record's title track and cover of "In the Ghetto" set the template for a band that will remain Cave's primary vehicle for the next four decades.
The Firstborn Is Dead Second Bad Seeds album, a tribute to Elvis Presley The Bad Seeds' second album channels Cave's fascination with American blues and gospel mythology, framed loosely around the birth of Elvis Presley. Recorded partly in Germany, the record leans on stark, swampy arrangements and is notable for cementing Cave's interest in Southern Gothic and biblical imagery as recurring lyrical territory. It further distances the band from the noise of The Birthday Party in favor of slow-burning, atmospheric storytelling.
Your Funeral... My Trial Bad Seeds album deepens gothic romanticism Released as a double LP, "Your Funeral... My Trial" pushes the Bad Seeds' sound toward a more romantic, orchestrated gothic style, with tracks like "The Carny" showcasing Cave's growing ambition as a lyricist and arranger. The album is recorded during a period of heavy heroin addiction, and its baroque, funereal atmosphere reflects the turmoil of Cave's personal life at the time. It is later regarded as a transitional bridge toward the band's more celebrated late-1980s work.
Tender Prey Album featuring "The Mercy Seat" "Tender Prey" produces one of Cave's most enduring compositions, "The Mercy Seat", a first-person death-row monologue that becomes a signature song covered by artists including Johnny Cash. The album is recorded in São Paulo and London while Cave's addiction is near its worst, yet it is widely considered one of the strongest records of the band's first decade. Its blend of gospel fervor, industrial noise and narrative songwriting solidifies the Bad Seeds' critical reputation.
And the Ass Saw the Angel Cave's debut novel published Cave publishes his first novel, a densely written Southern Gothic tale of a mute outcast in a fictional American backwater town, drawing heavily on William Faulkner and the King James Bible. Written over several years amid his addiction, the book establishes Cave as a serious literary figure beyond music and previews the narrative obsessions—religion, violence, fate—that recur throughout his songwriting. It remains a cult favorite among readers of American Gothic fiction.
The Good Son Recorded in São Paulo, a turn toward tenderness Written while Cave is living in São Paulo, Brazil, with his partner Viviane Carneiro and their newborn son Luke, "The Good Son" marks a marked softening in tone, trading the band's earlier violence for string-laden, almost classical arrangements. The shift reflects a period of relative domestic stability and Cave's first attempts to get his addiction under control. Critics note the record as a pivot point toward the more melodic, emotionally direct songwriting of the band's following decade.
Henry's Dream Bad Seeds album produced by David Briggs Produced by Neil Young collaborator David Briggs, "Henry's Dream" returns to a rawer, more urgent sound after the relative calm of "The Good Son", featuring tracks such as "Papa Won't Leave You, Henry" and "Straight to You". The album captures the Bad Seeds at their most muscular, balancing Cave's narrative bent with a harder rock edge. It further raises the band's profile in the United States and Europe going into the mid-1990s.
Let Love In Album featuring "Red Right Hand" and "Do You Love Me?" "Let Love In" becomes one of the Bad Seeds' most commercially successful records, anchored by the ominous "Red Right Hand", a song that later gains wide exposure through film and television use, and the theatrical opener "Do You Love Me?". The album balances menace and tenderness in equal measure and is frequently cited by critics as the point where Cave's songwriting reaches full maturity. It cements the classic mid-1990s lineup of the Bad Seeds as a major creative force.
Murder Ballads Concept album of murder narratives, incl. Kylie Minogue duet Built entirely around narrative songs of murder and revenge, "Murder Ballads" becomes Cave's commercial breakthrough, driven by the surprise hit single "Where the Wild Roses Grow", a duet with Australian pop star Kylie Minogue, and "Henry Lee", a duet with PJ Harvey. The record's dark humor and theatrical violence introduce Cave to a much wider mainstream audience while still satisfying longtime fans of his gothic storytelling. It becomes one of the best-selling albums of the Bad Seeds' catalogue.
The Boatman's Call Stripped-back album of love and loss Widely regarded as one of Cave's finest works, "The Boatman's Call" abandons the Bad Seeds' earlier bombast for spare, piano-led ballads written in the wake of his breakup with PJ Harvey and the end of his marriage to Viviane Carneiro. Songs like "Into My Arms" and "Are You the One That I've Been Waiting For?" reveal a newly confessional, emotionally direct lyrical voice. The album is later credited with expanding Cave's audience among listeners who had previously found his work too extreme.
No More Shall We Part Bad Seeds album following Cave's move to Brighton Released after Cave settles in Brighton, England, with his second wife Susie Bick, "No More Shall We Part" continues the introspective, ballad-driven direction of "The Boatman's Call" while introducing a fuller, more orchestrated Bad Seeds sound. Written during a period of sobriety, the record reflects newfound domestic contentment following the birth of his twin sons Arthur and Earl in 2000. It is met with strong critical praise for its restraint and emotional clarity.
Nocturama A quickly recorded, transitional Bad Seeds record Recorded in under two weeks, "Nocturama" is a comparatively loose and eclectic Bad Seeds album, ranging from the tender "She Passed By My Window" to the sprawling closer "Babe, I'm on Fire". Though less celebrated than its predecessors, the record marks a period of restless experimentation that sets up the harder-edged direction of the band's next release. It also features Cave's first prominent recorded collaboration with violinist and multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis.
Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus Double album with gospel choir backing Released as a two-disc set, "Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus" pairs a raucous, gospel-choir-driven rock record with a quieter, more baroque companion album. The project marks Warren Ellis's emergence as Cave's primary musical collaborator and co-writer, a partnership that will come to define the band's sound for the next two decades. The record is widely regarded as a creative high point and a career revival after the more subdued 1990s ballad albums.
The Proposition Cave writes the screenplay for John Hillcoat's Western Cave writes the screenplay for "The Proposition", a brutal Australian outback Western directed by longtime collaborator John Hillcoat and starring Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone and Emily Watson. Cave and Warren Ellis also compose the film's score, beginning a prolific parallel career in film composition. The project marks Cave's establishment as a serious screenwriter and deepens his creative partnership with Ellis beyond music.
– 2007 Grinderman Formed Stripped-down garage-rock side project Cave forms Grinderman with Bad Seeds members Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey and Jim Sclavunos as a raw, guitar-driven outlet distinct from the increasingly orchestral main band. The project's self-titled 2007 debut, fronted by the single "No Pussy Blues", trades in blunt humor and garage-rock aggression, offering a deliberately unpolished contrast to recent Bad Seeds records. Grinderman allows Cave to revisit the confrontational energy of his Birthday Party years within a new context.
Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! Bad Seeds album drawing on Grinderman's energy Following the Grinderman detour, the Bad Seeds channel some of that project's raw energy into "Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!", a record built around loose, groove-driven arrangements and Cave's reworking of the biblical Lazarus story into a modern urban narrative. The title track becomes one of the band's most recognizable later singles. The album signals a rejuvenated, more playful phase in the band's mid-career output.
The Death of Bunny Munro Cave's second novel published Cave publishes his second novel, a dark comedy following a compulsive, self-destructive traveling salesman and his young son across the south coast of England. Released alongside a Bad Seeds-scored audiobook read by Cave himself, the book displays a sharper comic sensibility than his debut novel while retaining his preoccupation with fatherhood, guilt and mortality. It further establishes Cave as a genuine dual-career novelist and songwriter.
Push the Sky Away Atmospheric, minimalist Bad Seeds album Recorded in an old mansion near Brighton, "Push the Sky Away" strips the Bad Seeds' sound down to hushed, looping arrangements built largely around Warren Ellis's textures rather than conventional rock instrumentation. Thematically the record turns inward, meditating on the internet, higher powers and the nature of songwriting itself. It is widely praised as a late-career creative peak and a template for the more experimental albums that follow.
20,000 Days on Earth Docu-fiction feature film about Cave's life Directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard release "20,000 Days on Earth", a hybrid documentary-fiction film depicting a fictionalized single day in Cave's life, blending concert footage, scripted conversations and archival material. The film wins awards at the Sundance Film Festival and offers an unusually candid, if stylized, portrait of Cave's creative process. It becomes an influential model for later artist documentaries blending fact and fiction.
Death of Arthur Cave Cave's fifteen-year-old son dies Cave's fifteen-year-old son Arthur, one of his twins with Susie Bick, dies on 14 July 2015 after falling from a cliff near Ovingdean, Brighton, having taken LSD. The tragedy devastates Cave and his family and profoundly reshapes the tone of his subsequent work, introducing an unguarded, grief-centered honesty into his songwriting that had not been present before. The loss becomes the central, if often oblique, subject of the albums that follow.
Skeleton Tree and One More Time with Feeling Album and documentary made in the aftermath of Arthur's death Largely written before Arthur's death but completed and released after it, "Skeleton Tree" is accompanied by "One More Time with Feeling", a black-and-white 3D documentary by Andrew Dominik that captures the band recording amid raw grief. The album's sparse, unsettled arrangements and Cave's fractured, half-spoken vocals are read almost universally as a direct confrontation with loss, even where lyrics predate the tragedy. Both works are received as unusually intimate documents of mourning translated into art.
Officer of the Order of Australia Cave honored for services to music and the arts Cave is appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the Queen's Birthday Honours, recognizing his contributions to the performing arts as a musician, author and screenwriter over more than four decades. The honor marks a notable formal acknowledgment from his home country of an artist whose work had often been considered too dark or transgressive for mainstream recognition earlier in his career. It reflects Cave's growing status as an elder statesman of Australian culture.
The Red Hand Files Launched Cave begins answering fan questions online Cave launches "The Red Hand Files", a website on which he answers questions submitted directly by fans on subjects ranging from grief and faith to songwriting craft and everyday advice. Written with unusual candor, the letters become a significant literary outlet in their own right, later collected into published anthologies. The project cements Cave's reputation for direct, unmediated engagement with his audience following Arthur's death.
Ghosteen Double album confronting grief and transcendence "Ghosteen" is widely interpreted as Cave's most direct musical reckoning with Arthur's death, a largely synthesizer-based double album divided into songs "for the living" and songs "for the dead". Devoid of traditional rock instrumentation, the record's ambient, hymn-like structures mark the furthest evolution yet of the minimalist direction begun on "Push the Sky Away". It is met with widespread critical acclaim and regarded by many as one of the defining albums of Cave's career.
Carnage Surprise collaborative album with Warren Ellis Released without prior announcement during the COVID-19 pandemic, "Carnage" is credited jointly to Cave and Warren Ellis rather than the full Bad Seeds, reflecting the circumstances of its isolated recording. The album continues the atmospheric, electronic-leaning textures of "Ghosteen" while incorporating a harder, more turbulent emotional register. It is praised as a fitting continuation of Cave's late-period exploration of grief, connection and renewal.
Death of Jethro Cave Cave's eldest son dies at age 31 Cave's eldest son, Jethro Lazenby Cave, dies in May 2022 at the age of 31, shortly after his release from prison. The second devastating loss of a son in seven years compounds the grief already central to Cave's recent work and casts a heavy shadow over the memoir he is completing at the time. Cave speaks about the loss with characteristic openness in subsequent Red Hand Files entries and public appearances.
Faith, Hope and Carnage Memoir in conversation with Seán O'Hagan published Cave publishes "Faith, Hope and Carnage", a book-length series of conversations with journalist Seán O'Hagan conducted over several years, addressing grief, faith, creativity and the deaths of his sons Arthur and Jethro. The book becomes a bestseller and is praised for its unusually direct and unsentimental treatment of loss. It stands alongside "The Red Hand Files" as one of Cave's most personal public statements outside of his music.
Wild God Bad Seeds album embracing joy and transcendence "Wild God" marks a deliberate turn toward euphoria and communal celebration after a decade of grief-centered records, with Cave describing the album as an attempt to reclaim joy without abandoning the losses that preceded it. Recorded with a large ensemble including a choir and expanded percussion, the album's anthemic arrangements mark a notable contrast to the minimalism of "Ghosteen" and "Carnage". It is received as a hopeful, life-affirming capstone to Cave's mid-2020s creative period.
