Michel Foucault Timeline

Michel Foucault 29

1926 Birth in Poitiers Paul-Michel Foucault is born into a provincial bourgeois medical family Foucault was born on 15 October 1926 in Poitiers, France, the son of a prominent surgeon who expected him to follow the same path. He was a brilliant but troubled student, excelling in history and philosophy while struggling with the expectations of a conservative provincial upbringing. The tension between institutional authority and individual formation that marked his childhood would become a recurring theme in his later work on discipline and normalization.
1946 Enters the École Normale Supérieure Begins rigorous philosophical training in Paris Foucault was admitted to the elite École Normale Supérieure in 1946, immersing himself in phenomenology, Hegelianism, and Marxism under teachers including Jean Hyppolite and the historian of science Georges Canguilhem, whose work on the normal and the pathological deeply shaped him. He formed a close, complicated friendship with fellow student Louis Althusser. These were also years of acute personal crisis, marked by depression and a suicide attempt, which sharpened his lifelong interest in the boundaries between reason and madness.
1948 – 1949 Earns degrees in philosophy and psychology Completes licences at the Sorbonne, turning toward the human sciences After earning his licence in philosophy in 1948, Foucault pursued a further degree in psychology, reflecting his growing fascination with the emerging human sciences and clinical practice. This dual training in philosophy and psychology gave him the tools to later interrogate psychology and psychiatry not as neutral sciences but as historically contingent systems of knowledge and control.
1950 – 1953 Joins and later leaves the French Communist Party Brief Party membership shaped and then soured by Cold War politics On Althusser's encouragement, Foucault joined the French Communist Party in 1950, hoping to align his intellectual work with political action. Growing disillusioned with the Party's rigidity and its treatment of dissenting members, including antisemitic undertones in some campaigns, he quietly left around 1953. The experience left him permanently skeptical of party orthodoxy and organized political dogma, a skepticism that would inform his later preference for specific, localized activism over grand ideological programs.
1952 – 1955 Diploma in psychopathology; clinical work at Sainte-Anne Clinical exposure to psychiatry informs his later critique of institutions Foucault earned a diploma in psychopathology in 1952 and spent time working and observing at the Sainte-Anne psychiatric hospital in Paris. Direct exposure to asylum life and psychiatric practice gave him firsthand material for his later genealogies of madness and the clinic, showing him how diagnostic categories functioned as instruments of institutional power as much as medical description.
1954 Publishes Mental Illness and Psychology His first book explores the historical construction of mental illness Foucault's first book, published in 1954, examined how the very concept of mental illness had been constructed historically rather than discovered as a natural fact. Though he later distanced himself from some of its arguments, it announced the method that would define his career: treating psychiatric and medical categories as products of specific historical conditions rather than timeless truths.
1955 – 1958 Cultural attaché in Uppsala, Sweden Teaches French and researches the history of madness at a well-stocked medical library Foucault took a post as director of the Maison de France in Uppsala, Sweden, teaching French language and civilization while making extensive use of the university's outstanding medical history collection. It was here that he began serious research for what would become his doctoral thesis on the history of madness, drawing on rare archival and medical sources unavailable in France.
1958 – 1960 Diplomatic postings in Warsaw and Hamburg Continues writing his doctoral thesis while serving abroad Foucault moved on to direct French cultural institutes in Warsaw, Poland, and later Hamburg, Germany, continuing his diplomatic and teaching work while finishing the manuscript of his doctoral thesis. His time in Warsaw ended abruptly amid a personal scandal engineered by Polish security services, a reminder of the surveillance and disciplinary apparatus he would soon theorize.
1961 Defends History of Madness Doctoral thesis traces the changing treatment of madness since the Renaissance Foucault returned to France to defend his doctoral thesis, published as Folie et Déraison: Histoire de la folie à l'âge classique. The book argued that the modern concept of madness as mental illness emerged through specific historical ruptures, particularly the "Great Confinement" of the classical age, rather than through steady scientific progress. It established the archaeological method of tracing how categories of knowledge are produced and established him as a major intellectual voice.
1962 – 1963 Professor at Clermont-Ferrand; meets Daniel Defert Begins a lifelong partnership with the sociologist and activist Foucault took a professorship in psychology and then philosophy at the University of Clermont-Ferrand, where in 1963 he met the sociology student Daniel Defert. Their relationship became a lifelong partnership, and Defert would later co-found the prison-activism group Foucault led and remain his closest collaborator until his death.
1963 Publishes The Birth of the Clinic Examines the emergence of the modern medical gaze Naissance de la clinique traced how the modern hospital and the diagnostic "medical gaze" emerged at the end of the eighteenth century, transforming the way doctors perceived, described, and classified the body and disease. The book extended his archaeological method from psychiatry to medicine as a whole, showing how clinical perception is itself historically structured.
1966 Publishes The Order of Things Unexpected bestseller on the history of the human sciences brings fame Les Mots et les Choses examined the underlying structures of knowledge, or "epistemes," that made possible the natural sciences, economics, and linguistics across different historical periods, famously concluding with the provocative claim that "man" as an object of knowledge was a recent invention that might soon disappear. Despite its difficulty, the book became a surprise bestseller in France and made Foucault a public intellectual celebrity, often grouped controversially with the structuralists.
1966 – 1968 Teaches philosophy at the University of Tunis Witnesses political unrest and the 1967 student riots in Tunisia Foucault took a teaching position in Tunisia, where he witnessed the harsh government crackdown on student protests in 1967 and helped some students evade arrest. The direct experience of state repression abroad, just before the May 1968 upheavals in France, sharpened his growing interest in the concrete mechanisms of political power.
1968 – 1969 Returns to France, helps found the Vincennes philosophy department Chairs the experimental philosophy department at the new University of Paris VIII Foucault returned to France shortly after the May 1968 uprisings and was asked to organize the philosophy department at the new experimental University of Paris VIII at Vincennes, recruiting figures such as Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Rancière. The famously radical, exam-free institution reflected the era's push to remake educational institutions themselves.
1969 Publishes The Archaeology of Knowledge Lays out his method of discourse analysis L'Archéologie du savoir was Foucault's most systematic methodological statement, formalizing the "archaeological" analysis of discourse he had used in his earlier histories and clarifying his distance from structuralism and traditional intellectual history. It served as a theoretical bridge to the more explicitly power-focused genealogical work of the 1970s.
1970 Elected to the Collège de France Takes the chair in the History of Systems of Thought Foucault was elected to the Collège de France, France's most prestigious research institution, holding the newly created chair in the History of Systems of Thought until his death. The position required him to deliver a public lecture course every year, and these courses became a laboratory for ideas — on punishment, sexuality, governmentality, and biopolitics — later published as some of his most influential work.
1971 Co-founds the Groupe d'Information sur les Prisons Activist group documents prison conditions and amplifies inmates' voices Foucault co-founded the Groupe d'Information sur les Prisons (GIP) with Daniel Defert and others, an activist collective that gathered testimony from prisoners and publicized conditions inside French jails. Rather than speaking for prisoners, the GIP aimed to give them the means to speak for themselves, a model of activism that directly informed the analysis of disciplinary power in his next major book.
1971 Televised debate with Noam Chomsky Dutch broadcast exchange on human nature, justice, and power In a widely watched Dutch television debate, Foucault and the American linguist Noam Chomsky sparred over human nature, language, and whether justice could be grounded in universal norms. Foucault argued that concepts of justice were themselves expressions of historically specific power relations rather than timeless ideals, a position that crystallized his difference from Enlightenment humanism.
1975 – 1983 Begins regular visiting professorships at UC Berkeley American lecture tours spread his ideas across the Atlantic From the mid-1970s onward, Foucault made frequent extended visits to the University of California, Berkeley, lecturing on power, subjectivity, and later ethics. These American tours, alongside translations of his books, made him one of the most-cited scholars in the U.S. humanities and introduced his methods to a generation of American theorists.
1975 Publishes Discipline and Punish Traces the birth of the modern prison and disciplinary power Surveiller et punir opened with a gruesome account of a public execution before tracing the shift from spectacular corporal punishment to the modern prison's subtler discipline of the body and soul, using Jeremy Bentham's Panopticon as its central image of pervasive surveillance. It became one of the most cited works in the humanities and social sciences, extending Foucault's analysis of power well beyond prisons to schools, hospitals, factories, and the military.
1976 Publishes The Will to Knowledge First volume of History of Sexuality challenges the repressive hypothesis The first volume of Histoire de la sexualité argued against the common assumption that modern societies simply repressed sex; instead, Foucault contended, they produced an unprecedented explosion of discourse about sexuality through medicine, confession, and psychiatry, making sex a privileged object of knowledge and control. The book reframed power not as purely prohibitive but as productive, circulating through institutions and everyday practices.
1977 – 1978 Lectures on Security, Territory, Population Collège de France course introduces the concept of governmentality In his 1977–78 Collège de France lecture course, Foucault introduced the concept of "governmentality," analyzing how modern states came to govern populations through statistics, economy, and security apparatuses rather than sovereign command alone. The course marked a pivot from disciplinary institutions toward the broader question of how power organizes entire populations.
1978 – 1979 Reports on the Iranian Revolution Dispatches for Corriere della Sera explore "political spirituality" Foucault traveled to Iran as a correspondent for the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, filing dispatches on the revolution against the Shah that described a novel "political spirituality" animating the uprising. His largely sympathetic early coverage, written before the consolidation of clerical rule, later drew significant criticism and remains one of the most debated episodes of his public life.
1979 – 1982 Human rights activism for refugees and dissidents Joins Sartre in appeals for Vietnamese boat people and addresses state power at the UN Foucault joined Jean-Paul Sartre in a rare public appearance together to appeal on behalf of Vietnamese "boat people" refugees in 1979, and in 1981 he addressed the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva, arguing that citizens have a duty to speak out against abuses of power regardless of state sovereignty. These interventions reflected his conviction that intellectuals should engage in specific, concrete struggles rather than speak as universal moral authorities.
1979 Lectures on The Birth of Biopolitics Collège de France course examines liberalism and neoliberal governance Foucault's 1978–79 lecture course examined the emergence of liberal and neoliberal governance, analyzing how economic rationality became a general principle for organizing state power and even personal conduct. Long overlooked, the course was later widely read as an early and prescient analysis of neoliberalism.
1984 – 2015 Posthumous publication and lasting influence Collège de France lecture courses appear in print, cementing his influence across the humanities In the decades after his death, Foucault's annual Collège de France lecture courses were transcribed and published in full, revealing the full arc of his thought on discipline, biopolitics, governmentality, and ethics and prompting new waves of scholarship. His concepts of power/knowledge, discourse, biopower, and governmentality became foundational reference points across philosophy, sociology, history, law, gender studies, and political theory.
1984 Publishes The Care of the Self Third volume examines Greco-Roman ethics of self-formation Le Souci de soi, the third volume of the History of Sexuality, extended Foucault's study of ancient ethics into the Greco-Roman world, exploring practices of self-cultivation, marriage, and friendship. Published alongside the second volume just weeks before his death, it completed his late turn from power and knowledge toward an "ethics of the self."
1984 Publishes The Use of Pleasure Second volume of History of Sexuality turns to Greek antiquity L'Usage des plaisirs, the long-delayed second volume of the History of Sexuality, shifted focus to ancient Greek ethics, examining how free men were expected to cultivate self-mastery over pleasure. The turn to antiquity reflected Foucault's late interest in "techniques of the self" through which individuals shape their own conduct.
1984 Michel Foucault dies in Paris Succumbs to an AIDS-related illness at the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital Michel Foucault died on 25 June 1984 at the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital in Paris from complications of AIDS, becoming the first prominent French public figure known to have died of the disease at a time when it carried enormous stigma and was barely understood. His death, at 57, came just as the final two volumes of the History of Sexuality reached bookstores.
