Egypt: The Ptolemaic Kingdom Timeline

Egypt: The Ptolemaic Kingdom 50

332 BC – 30 BC Alexandria -- the city that changed the world Alexandria (founded 331 BC by Alexander the Great, developed by Ptolemy I and II) is the greatest city of the Hellenistic world and, at its height under the Ptolemies, the largest city on earth after Rome. Its grid plan, designed by Deinocrates of Rhodes, features a main boulevard (Canopic Road) 30 metres wide and 7km long, intersected at right angles by a secondary boulevard of equal width. The royal quarter (Brucheion) occupies one-quarter of the city and includes the palace, the Library, the Museum and the Sema (Alexander's tomb). The harbour contains the Pharos lighthouse and the island of Antirhodos (where Cleopatra's palace may have stood -- it is now submerged). The city's population at its height is estimated at 500,000-1,000,000, making it the world's second-largest city. It becomes the intellectual capital of the ancient world and the centre of Neoplatonist philosophy, early Christianity and Islamic scholarship.
332 BC – 30 BC Egypt: The Ptolemaic Kingdom (332–30 BC) The Ptolemaic period (332-30 BC) spans 302 years -- from Alexander the Great's conquest to Cleopatra VII's suicide -- during which Egypt is ruled by a Greek-speaking Macedonian dynasty that gradually Egyptianises itself while making Alexandria the greatest city and intellectual centre of the ancient world. The Ptolemies are Egypt's most paradoxical rulers: Greek in language and culture, they present themselves as pharaohs, build magnificent Egyptian temples, participate in Egyptian religious rituals, learn Egyptian (at least in the case of Cleopatra VII), and produce a unique synthesis of Greek and Egyptian civilisation that influences every subsequent culture. Alexandria's Library, Museum, Pharos, and intellectual community represent the apex of ancient learning. The dynasty ends when Cleopatra VII commits suicide on 12 August 30 BC rather than walk in Octavian's triumph -- and Egypt becomes a Roman province.
332 BC – 30 BC Ptolemaic legacy -- Greece meets Egypt, the world changes The Ptolemaic period's legacy is the most pervasive of any ancient civilisation -- a synthesis of Greek reason and Egyptian spiritual depth that creates the intellectual and religious matrix from which Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Western science all emerge. Specific legacies: the Septuagint (the Greek Old Testament that shapes the New Testament's language and theology); the Isis cult (whose iconography and theology directly influence Christian Mariology); the Neoplatonist philosophy (Plotinus, Porphyry, Iamblichus -- developed at Alexandria, shaping all subsequent Christian and Islamic theology); the mathematical and scientific tradition (Euclid, Eratosthenes, Archimedes, Hipparchus, Ptolemy) that defines Western science; and the very concept of the library and university (the Museum's model of funded research in a shared space persists in every university in the world). The 302 years of Ptolemaic Egypt are among the most consequential in human intellectual history.
332 BC – 283 BC Ptolemy I Soter -- the general who took Egypt Ptolemy I Soter (367-283 BC), one of Alexander's most capable generals and childhood friends, takes Egypt as his share of the empire after Alexander's death (323 BC) and founds the Ptolemaic dynasty. He is initially satrap, then declares himself pharaoh (c.305 BC) -- the first Macedonian to do so. His political achievements: securing his control of Egypt against rival Macedonian successor kings; founding Alexandria (though Alexander chose the site, Ptolemy builds the city); stealing Alexander's body and bringing it to Alexandria to be buried (an act of enormous political significance -- possession of Alexander's body legitimises his rule); and founding the Museum and Library. He is the first Ptolemy to be worshipped as a god during his lifetime (at various Greek city-states). He abdicates in favour of his son Ptolemy II three years before his death.
300 BC – 30 BC Alexandrian literature -- Homer to Theocritus The Alexandrian literary scholars and poets of the 3rd-2nd centuries BC produce some of the most influential literature of the ancient world -- work that shapes the Western literary tradition as profoundly as any writer before Virgil. The scholars: Zenodotus (first systematic editor of Homer), Aristophanes of Byzantium (critical edition of Pindar, development of punctuation and accentuation), Aristarchus (the greatest textual critic of antiquity -- his Homer is the basis of all modern editions). The poets: Callimachus (the most learned and sophisticated poet of the age -- his Aetia, Hymns and epigrams redefine Greek poetry); Apollonius of Rhodes (the Argonautica -- the only surviving Hellenistic epic, influencing Virgil's Aeneid directly); Theocritus (inventor of pastoral poetry, the model for Virgil's Eclogues). These writers transform what it means to write literature.
300 BC – 30 BC Cleopatra's children -- the end of the dynasty Cleopatra VII has four children: Caesarion (Ptolemy XV Caesar, 47 BC), her son by Julius Caesar; and three children by Mark Antony -- the twins Alexander Helios and Cleopatra Selene II (born 40 BC) and Ptolemy Philadelphus (born 36 BC). After Cleopatra's suicide, Caesarion (aged 17) is executed by Octavian -- "too many Caesars is not good" (Arius Didymus advises Octavian). The three Antony children are taken to Rome and raised by Octavia (Antony's Roman widow and Octavian's sister) -- a remarkable act of generosity. Cleopatra Selene II eventually marries Juba II of Mauretania (modern Morocco/Algeria) and rules there as queen -- the last member of the Ptolemaic dynasty to hold royal power. Her son Ptolemy of Mauretania (the last person to bear the name Ptolemy in a royal context) is murdered by the Roman emperor Caligula in 40 AD -- the absolute end of the dynasty.
300 BC – 30 BC Ctesibius -- inventor of hydraulics Ctesibius of Alexandria (c.285-222 BC), the son of a barber, is the founder of pneumatics and hydraulics -- the study of fluids and compressed air as working media. Working at the Museum under Ptolemy II and III, he invents: the hydraulis (the water organ -- the first keyboard musical instrument, which produces sound by forcing air through pipes using water pressure to maintain constant air pressure); the hydraulic clock (the most accurate timepiece of the ancient world, using the constant flow of water through a calibrated orifice to drive a pointer around a dial); the double-action force pump (still used in fire engines); and various pneumatic devices. He is the first to recognise that air is a material substance (not merely empty space) that can be compressed. His work is described by Hero of Alexandria and Vitruvius; his original writings are lost.
300 BC – 30 BC Egyptian Christianity -- the Coptic Church Christianity reaches Egypt in the 1st century AD -- tradition credits its introduction to the evangelist Mark, who founds the church at Alexandria c.42 AD. The Coptic (Egyptian Christian) church that develops is one of the oldest in the world and makes distinctive contributions to Christian theology and practice. The Desert Fathers -- Anthony the Great (c.251-356 AD), Pachomius (c.292-348 AD) and others -- develop Christian monasticism in the Egyptian desert, creating a tradition that spreads to Europe and shapes the entire history of Christian religious life. The Nag Hammadi library (discovered 1945), a collection of Gnostic texts buried in the Egyptian desert in the 4th century, includes the Gospel of Thomas -- one of the most significant non-canonical Christian texts. The Coptic language (derived from demotic Egyptian, written in the Greek alphabet with six additional demotic letters) is the last form of the ancient Egyptian language.
300 BC – 246 BC Euclid -- the foundation of mathematics Euclid of Alexandria (c.300 BC) writes the Elements -- the most influential mathematics textbook in history, used continuously for 2,300 years. Working at the Museum under Ptolemy I and II, he organises all of Greek mathematics into a deductive system: 13 books, starting from 23 definitions, 5 postulates and 5 common notions (self-evident truths), and deriving 465 propositions by logical proof. The Elements covers plane geometry, number theory (including a proof that there are infinitely many primes), incommensurability, 3D geometry and the construction of the five Platonic solids. It is the model for all subsequent deductive science. When a student asks Euclid whether geometry has any practical application, Euclid reportedly tells his slave to give the student three obols "since he must make a profit from what he learns." The Elements is second only to the Bible in the number of editions published since the invention of printing.
300 BC – 30 BC Hero of Alexandria -- the ancient engineer Hero of Alexandria (c.10-70 AD -- the dates are disputed; he may be slightly later than the Ptolemaic period) is the most practical and inventive engineer of the ancient world. His surviving works include: the Pneumatica (descriptions of machines operated by air, steam and water, including the aeolipile -- the world's first steam turbine, a spinning brass sphere powered by steam); the Mechanica (on lifting machines, including the lever, pulley, wedge and screw); the Dioptra (on surveying instruments); the Belopoeica (on catapults and siege weapons); and the Automata (on mechanical theatrical performances). His aeolipile is the first device to demonstrate the conversion of steam into mechanical motion -- a principle that 1,800 years later produces the Industrial Revolution. Hero's failure to develop the steam engine industrially reflects the ancient world's dependence on slave labour, which removed the economic incentive.
300 BC – 30 BC Hipparchus -- the father of trigonometry Hipparchus of Nicaea (c.190-120 BC), working primarily at Rhodes but deeply connected to the Alexandrian tradition, is the most important astronomer of the ancient world. He discovers the precession of the equinoxes (the slow wobble of the Earth's axis that shifts the position of the equinoxes against the stars by approximately 1° every 72 years), produces the first comprehensive star catalogue (c.129 BC, recording the positions of approximately 850 stars -- reused by Ptolemy and the basis of all medieval catalogues), develops plane and spherical trigonometry, and introduces the division of the circle into 360 degrees and the hour into 60 minutes (from Babylonian astronomy). His star catalogue is used to discover the precession -- by comparing his positions with those of earlier astronomers, he detects the equinoxes have moved by approximately 2° in 150 years, implying a 26,000-year cycle.
300 BC – 30 BC Hypatia and late Alexandrian learning Hypatia of Alexandria (c.360-415 AD) -- though technically post-Ptolemaic -- represents the final flowering of the Alexandrian intellectual tradition. The daughter of the mathematician Theon, she is the first female mathematician known by name from the ancient world -- a teacher of mathematics, astronomy and Neoplatonist philosophy who attracts students from throughout the Mediterranean. She writes commentaries on Diophantus's Arithmetica, Apollonius's Conics and Ptolemy's Almagest. Her murder by a Christian mob in 415 AD (she is dragged from her chariot, taken to a church and killed with oyster shells or roof tiles) is traditionally treated as the symbolic end of classical learning in Alexandria. Whether or not this is accurate, her death marks the end of the pagan intellectual tradition that the Museum represents. The Alexandrian tradition survives in Islam: the House of Wisdom in Baghdad (830 AD) is the direct intellectual heir of the Alexandrian Museum.
300 BC – 30 BC Isis -- the universal goddess Isis (Egyptian: Aset), originally an Egyptian goddess of magic, motherhood and healing, becomes during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods the most universally worshipped goddess in the ancient world -- absorbing the attributes of dozens of other goddesses (Hathor, Aphrodite, Artemis, Ceres, Fortuna) and spreading her cult from Britain to Afghanistan. The Isis cult's appeal: she is a devoted wife (she reassembles Osiris's scattered body), a loving mother (she protects the infant Horus), a powerful magician (she tricks Ra into revealing his secret name), and a guide of souls through the underworld. The Isis initiation mysteries (described by Apuleius in The Golden Ass) offer the believer personal salvation, direct communion with the divine and victory over death. Her iconography -- a woman with a solar disc between cow horns, seated nursing the infant Horus -- directly influences the iconography of the Madonna and Child in early Christian art.
300 BC – 30 BC Ptolemaic art -- the fusion begins Ptolemaic art represents the most thoroughgoing synthesis of Greek and Egyptian traditions in the ancient world -- not a random mixing but a deliberate code-switching in which the same ruler appears in purely Egyptian style (seated pharaoh in hieroglyphic temple reliefs) and in purely Greek style (Hellenistic portrait sculpture) depending on the context and audience. The Egyptian temples built by the Ptolemies (Edfu, Dendera, Kom Ombo, Philae) are in the traditional Egyptian style -- the Ptolemies represented as pharaohs making offerings to the gods in the traditional posture. Simultaneously, the royal portrait sculpture of the Ptolemies is purely Hellenistic: diademed, realistic portraits in the style of the Macedonian court. The synthesis produces occasional hybrid forms: "Ptolemaic-style" statues showing the pharaoh with Greek facial features but Egyptian dress and proportions.
300 BC – 30 BC Ptolemaic bureaucracy -- the most efficient state The Ptolemaic bureaucracy is the most sophisticated administrative system of the ancient world -- a three-language (Greek, demotic Egyptian and later Latin), multi-level apparatus that controls every aspect of Egyptian economic life with extraordinary thoroughness. The key features: a census conducted every 14 years; a monopoly system (the state controls the production and distribution of oil, textiles, papyrus, salt and dozens of other commodities); a banking system with branches throughout Egypt; and an elaborate system of land classification (royal land, sacred land, cleruchic land for soldiers, private land) with different tax rates. The Zenon Papyri (a businessman's archive from the Fayum, c.259-240 BC) reveal the daily workings of a large Ptolemaic estate: letters, accounts, receipts, invoices and complaints that read with startling modernity. The Ptolemaic tax system generates revenues that fund the Library, the Pharos and the Ptolemaic empire.
300 BC – 30 BC Ptolemaic coinage -- the drachma of Egypt The Ptolemaic monetary system, established by Ptolemy I on the Phoenician standard (lighter than the Attic standard used by most Greek states), creates a closed monetary zone in which foreign silver coins must be exchanged for Ptolemaic coins at the border -- giving the state a monopoly profit on all currency exchange and making Egyptian coinage deliberately incompatible with the wider Greek world. Ptolemaic gold coins (the octadrachm and tetradrachm) feature royal portraits of extraordinary quality -- the most naturalistic coin portraits of the ancient world. The obverse shows the reigning monarch; the reverse shows the eagle of Zeus (symbol of the Ptolemies). The portraits become increasingly realistic through the dynasty: the Cleopatra-era portraits show a strong-featured woman with a prominent hooked nose -- matching her coin portraits -- that bears little resemblance to the idealised beauty of later tradition.
300 BC – 30 BC Ptolemaic medicine -- Herophilus and Erasistratus The Ptolemaic Museum at Alexandria is the site of two of the most important medical breakthroughs of the ancient world. Herophilus of Chalcedon (c.335-280 BC), working in Alexandria under Ptolemy I and II, is the first scientist to systematically practice human dissection (and possibly vivisection of condemned criminals) -- distinguishing between arteries and veins, identifying the brain as the seat of intelligence (not the heart, as previously believed), describing the nervous system, measuring the pulse with a water clock and writing extensively on the eye. His contemporary Erasistratus of Chios (c.304-250 BC) develops a near-mechanical model of the body -- distinguishing sensory and motor nerves, describing the heart as a pump, and approaching the circulation of the blood more closely than anyone before Harvey. Together they advance medicine by 1,500 years -- but most of their work is lost.
300 BC – 30 BC Ptolemy V Epiphanes -- the Rosetta Stone king Ptolemy V Epiphanes (205-180 BC) comes to the throne as a child after the murder of his parents -- his mother Arsinoe III is killed by court factions immediately after his father's death. His reign sees significant territorial losses (the Seleucid king Antiochus III takes the Levantine coast, including Judaea, in the Fifth Syrian War, 202-195 BC) and major internal revolts (the Great Theban Revolt, 206-186 BC, in which Upper Egypt under native Egyptian rulers is independent for 20 years). He is deposed during the revolt and restored with Seleucid military help. The Rosetta Stone is carved in his name (196 BC) to celebrate his assumption of full royal powers and the suppression of the revolts. He dies at approximately 28 -- poisoned, according to Diodorus Siculus, by his own generals who fear his plans to retake the lost territories.
300 BC – 30 BC Roman Egypt -- a province like no other When Egypt becomes a Roman province in 30 BC, its status is unique: too important to be governed by a senator (who might use its wealth to fund a coup), it is administered by a prefect of equestrian rank appointed directly by the emperor. Augustus (and subsequent emperors) present themselves as pharaohs in Egyptian temples -- completing construction projects begun by the Ptolemies, worshipping at Egyptian shrines, and being depicted in relief as traditional Egyptian kings. Roman Egypt is the wealthiest province of the empire: its grain feeds Rome, its papyrus supplies the empire's bureaucracy, and its Red Sea trade with India and Arabia provides the luxury goods that sustain Roman aristocratic life. The Nile's annual flood is reported to the emperor each year; a bad flood means higher grain prices throughout the Mediterranean.
300 BC – 30 BC Serapis -- the invented god Serapis is the most deliberate example of theological engineering in the ancient world -- a god invented by Ptolemy I (with advice from the Egyptian priest Manetho and the Greek religious expert Timotheus) to be worshipped by both Greeks and Egyptians. The name combines Osiris and the Apis bull (Osor-Apis, "Osiris-Apis") into a Greek-style deity with a Greek iconography (full beard, modius crown -- a grain basket on his head -- and a gentle, Olympian appearance). Serapis is the patron of Alexandria, god of the fertile Nile, of the underworld (he absorbs aspects of Hades), of healing (he absorbs Asclepius) and of the sea. His wife is Isis, his son Harpocrates (baby Horus). The Serapeum at Alexandria is the most magnificent temple in Egypt after Karnak -- described as second only to the Roman Capitolium in grandeur. Serapis's cult spreads throughout the Roman world; his temple is destroyed by the Christian bishop Theophilus in 391 AD.
300 BC – 30 BC The Antikythera mechanism -- Alexandrian technology The Antikythera mechanism, recovered from a Greek shipwreck c.70-60 BC and now in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens, is the world's oldest known analogue computer -- a device of extraordinary complexity that tracks the cycles of the sun and moon, predicts eclipses, calculates the dates of the Olympic Games and other Greek festivals, and models the motion of the five known planets. Made of approximately 30 bronze gears (82 surviving fragments), it is centuries ahead of anything else known from the ancient world -- the next comparable mechanical clock appears in 14th-century Europe. It almost certainly originated in a workshop connected to the Alexandrian scientific tradition (Archimedes designed similar devices; Hipparchus developed the astronomical cycles it uses). The mechanism demonstrates that the gap between ancient and modern science is smaller than commonly assumed.
300 BC – 30 BC The Edfu Temple -- the most complete in Egypt The Temple of Horus at Edfu (ancient Apollinopolis Magna), built between 237 and 57 BC under Ptolemy III through Ptolemy XII, is the best-preserved ancient temple in Egypt -- a complete structure in which every element (pylon, forecourt, hypostyle hall, offering hall, inner hall, sanctuary and roof) survives to its full original height. The temple is built over an earlier New Kingdom temple according to the plans recorded in the "Building Text" inscribed on its walls -- a detailed account of the architectural design, the ritual significance of each element and the mythological landscape of Edfu. The innermost sanctuary contains the granite naos (shrine) of Nectanebo I -- the original container for the cult statue. The walls of the inner corridors contain the "Triumph of Horus" reliefs -- the most complete mythological narrative sequence in any Egyptian temple, depicting the conflict between Horus and Seth in the form of a dramatic ritual performance.
300 BC – 30 BC The Fayum portraits -- faces of the ancient world The Fayum mummy portraits (c.1st century BC-3rd century AD) are the most naturalistic paintings from the ancient world -- wax encaustic or tempera paintings on wooden boards, placed over the mummy's face to represent the deceased, found primarily in the Fayum oasis south of Cairo. Over 900 survive, showing men, women and children of all ages in remarkable individual detail -- their faces, hairstyles, jewellery and clothing depicted with a directness and psychological intimacy unseen in any earlier ancient art. They are the direct ancestors of the Byzantine icon tradition. The Fayum portraits represent the Ptolemaic and Roman period's cosmopolitan population: Egyptian, Greek, Jewish, Roman and Syrian individuals whose features show the full ethnic diversity of ancient Alexandria and the Fayum.
300 BC – 30 BC The Great Theban Revolt -- native kings again The Great Theban Revolt (206-186 BC) is the most serious internal challenge to Ptolemaic rule -- 20 years during which Upper Egypt is governed by two native Egyptian pharaohs (Horwennefer and Ankhwennefer) who use traditional pharaonic titulature and present themselves as legitimate Egyptian rulers in opposition to the Greek Ptolemies. The revolt begins during the chaotic minority of Ptolemy V (who comes to the throne aged 5 after his parents' murder). The native pharaohs control all of Upper Egypt from Thebes to Aswan -- cutting off the gold supply and the Nubian trade routes. The Ptolemies eventually suppress the revolt in 186 BC with considerable difficulty. The revolt demonstrates both the persistence of native Egyptian identity under Ptolemaic rule and the fundamental limitations of the Ptolemaic synthesis -- Greek culture never fully absorbs Egyptian, and the potential for native resistance never disappears.
300 BC – 30 BC The Jewish community in Alexandria -- Philo and beyond The Jewish community in Alexandria is one of the largest, wealthiest and most culturally engaged in the ancient diaspora. Alexandria contains at least two of the five quarters into which the city is divided (Josephus says Jews form two-fifths of the population -- probably an exaggeration but indicative of their prominence). The community has its own ethnic quarter (the Delta quarter), its own governing council (gerusia), its own extensive privileges (including the right to live by their own laws). Philo of Alexandria (c.20 BC-50 AD) is the community's greatest intellectual -- a philosopher who synthesises Platonic philosophy with Jewish scriptural interpretation, developing the Logos concept (the divine word/reason that mediates between God and creation) that the Gospel of John will apply to Jesus. The Alexandrian Jewish community is the crucible in which Hellenistic Judaism, early Christianity and Neoplatonism all develop.
300 BC – 30 BC The Museum of Alexandria -- the ancient university The Museum (Mouseion, "Shrine of the Muses") of Alexandria, founded under Ptolemy I and developed under Ptolemy II, is the ancient world's most important research institution -- a community of scholars who receive royal stipends, free board and lodging, exemption from taxes and the right to use the Library. The Museum is not a teaching institution (it has no students) but a research community -- the world's first funded academic research centre. Its scholars include: Euclid (mathematics), Eratosthenes (geography, mathematics, astronomy), Aristarchus of Samos (who proposes the heliocentric model of the solar system in c.270 BC -- 1,800 years before Copernicus), Hero of Alexandria (engineering, mathematics), Ctesibius (hydraulics, pneumatics), Hipparchus (astronomy, trigonometry) and Claudius Ptolemy (astronomy, geography, harmonics). The Museum's collective output represents the apex of ancient scientific achievement.
300 BC – 30 BC The Ptolemaic army -- elephant versus elephant The Ptolemaic army reflects the hybrid character of the Ptolemaic state -- combining Macedonian-style heavy infantry (the Macedonian phalanx with sarissa -- the 5-6 metre pike that dominates Hellenistic warfare), Egyptian machimoi (native soldiers armed in traditional style), Greek and Carian mercenaries, Nubian archers, Jewish infantry, Arab camel riders and -- most spectacularly -- African war elephants. The African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana) is larger than the Indian elephant (Elephas maximus) used by the Seleucids, but ancient sources suggest the African elephants in Ptolemaic service (forest elephants from Eritrea and Sudan, captured and trained at Ptolemais Theron on the Red Sea) are smaller and more difficult to train than Indian elephants -- they reportedly panic and flee when they smell Indian elephants. The Battle of Raphia (217 BC) is the largest elephant engagement in history: 73 African versus 102 Indian elephants, with a total of 150,000 infantry and cavalry.
300 BC – 30 BC The Ptolemaic court -- ceremonial magnificence The Ptolemaic court at Alexandria is the most elaborate in the ancient world -- a court that combines the ceremonial traditions of the Egyptian pharaoh, the Macedonian warrior king and the Persian Great King into a synthesis of extraordinary splendour. The court's physical setting: the Royal Quarter (Brucheion) covering one-quarter of Alexandria, with multiple palaces, gardens, theatres, a private harbour and the Sema (Alexander's tomb). The court ceremonial: the pharaoh appears in public in full Egyptian pharaonic regalia for temple ceremonies; in Macedonian royal dress for military and administrative functions; and in elaborate Hellenistic court dress for banquets and receptions. Court entertainment: literary symposia attended by the greatest scholars of the age; theatrical performances; gladiatorial shows; and -- most famously -- the Grand Procession of Ptolemy II, which involved 57,600 infantry, 23,200 cavalry, 400 elephants, 73,000 foreign troops and thousands of performers.
300 BC – 30 BC The Ptolemaic succession crises -- sibling marriages The Ptolemaic dynasty's practice of sibling marriage -- brothers marrying sisters, a custom adopted from Egyptian royal tradition (though never previously practiced by the Macedonian court) -- is one of the most controversial aspects of their rule and a source of repeated succession crises. Ptolemy II (the first to adopt the practice, marrying his full sister Arsinoe II) is mocked by his Macedonian subjects as "Philadelphus" (sibling-loving) -- a nickname he turns into a title. The practice has both advantages (keeping the dynasty's bloodline pure and the dowry in the family) and severe disadvantages (family members competing for the throne, fratricide, queens with independent power bases). The resulting succession conflicts -- Ptolemy VIII fighting his brother and sister simultaneously; Cleopatra VII's war with her brother Ptolemy XIII -- are the defining dramas of the late Ptolemaic period.
300 BC – 30 BC The Septuagint -- the Bible in Greek The Septuagint (LXX, from the Latin for "seventy"), the Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures, is produced in Alexandria under Ptolemy II Philadelphus (c.285-246 BC) -- according to the Letter of Aristeas, by 72 Jewish scholars (6 from each of the 12 tribes) working in separate cells on the island of Pharos, whose identical translations miraculously agree. The legend aside, the translation is a genuine project of the 3rd-2nd centuries BC, produced for the large Greek-speaking Jewish community in Alexandria (and the diaspora generally) who no longer read Hebrew. The Septuagint is the Bible of early Christianity: the New Testament quotes the Hebrew scriptures almost exclusively from the Septuagint rather than the Hebrew original (including the famous Isaiah 7:14 "virgin" -- parthenos in Greek, almah in Hebrew -- which early Christians interpret as a prophecy of the virgin birth). Without Alexandria, the Septuagint would not exist; without the Septuagint, the New Testament would be unrecognisable.
285 BC – 246 BC Ptolemy II Philadelphus -- the builder of knowledge Ptolemy II Philadelphus (308-246 BC) is the Ptolemaic pharaoh most associated with the creation of Alexandria as the intellectual capital of the ancient world. He funds and expands the Library (reportedly ordering every ship entering Alexandria to surrender its books for copying), establishes the Museum (the ancient equivalent of a university, where scholars receive salaries, free meals and exemption from taxes), commissions the translation of the Hebrew scriptures into Greek (the Septuagint, completed according to tradition by 72 scholars in 72 days), and builds the Pharos lighthouse. He holds the most elaborate court in the ancient world -- his Grand Procession (279 BC), recorded in detail by Callixeinus of Rhodes, lasts a full day and involves animals from all over the known world, hundreds of performers and floats displaying the riches of his empire.
280 BC – 246 BC The Library of Alexandria -- all human knowledge The Library of Alexandria (Mousaion, "House of the Muses"), founded under Ptolemy I and developed under Ptolemy II Philadelphus, is the ancient world's most ambitious intellectual project -- an attempt to collect every text written in every language and make it available to scholars. At its height it holds between 400,000 and 700,000 scrolls. Its methods: Ptolemy III reportedly borrows the official copies of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides from Athens (paying a huge deposit), makes copies, and keeps the originals. The Library's scholars (Zenodotus, Aristophanes of Byzantium, Aristarchus) produce the first critical editions of Homer. Euclid writes the Elements. Eratosthenes measures the Earth's circumference. Hipparchus catalogues the stars. Archimedes (Syracusan but connected to Alexandria) develops calculus-like methods. The Library's "destruction" (by fire under Julius Caesar, by the decree of Theophilus in 391 AD, or by the Arab conquest) is disputed; it probably declined gradually rather than burning suddenly.
280 BC – 246 BC The Pharos of Alexandria -- the tallest lighthouse The Pharos of Alexandria, built on the island of Pharos in Alexandria's harbour under Ptolemy II (c.280-247 BC) by the architect Sostratus of Cnidus, is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the world's tallest lighthouse -- approximately 100-130 metres high, visible 50 kilometres out to sea. It consists of three sections: a square base (about 60 metres high), an octagonal middle section and a cylindrical top with a fire mirror that (according to medieval Arab sources) could set fire to enemy ships at a distance. The Pharos is damaged by several earthquakes and finally collapses in 1375 AD; its stones are reused in the Citadel of Qaitbey (still standing on the same site). Underwater archaeology in Alexandria's harbour has recovered some of its enormous stone blocks. The word "pharos" enters French (phare), Italian (faro) and Spanish (faro) as the generic word for lighthouse.
276 BC – 194 BC Eratosthenes -- measuring the Earth Eratosthenes of Cyrene (c.276-194 BC), chief librarian of the Library of Alexandria under Ptolemy III, is the first person to measure the circumference of the Earth with reasonable accuracy. He knows that at noon on the summer solstice, the sun is directly overhead at Syene (modern Aswan) -- because a deep well there has no shadow at that moment. At the same moment in Alexandria (approximately 800km north), he measures the sun's shadow at approximately 7.2° -- one-fiftieth of a circle. Multiplying 800km by 50 gives 40,000km -- remarkably close to the actual circumference of 40,075km. He also calculates the tilt of the Earth's axis (23.5°, accurate to 0.5°), estimates the distance to the sun and moon, draws the first map of the world with lines of latitude and longitude, and writes a comprehensive geographical work. He is so accomplished that his contemporaries nickname him "Beta" -- second best in everything.
270 BC Aristarchus of Samos -- the first heliocentric model Aristarchus of Samos (c.310-230 BC), working at the Museum of Alexandria under Ptolemy II and III, proposes the heliocentric model of the solar system -- approximately 1,800 years before Copernicus. He argues that the Earth revolves around the Sun (not the reverse), that the Earth rotates on its own axis daily, and that the apparent motion of the stars is caused by the Earth's orbital motion. His heliocentric model is reported by Archimedes in the Sand Reckoner: "Aristarchus brings out a book consisting of certain hypotheses, wherein it appears, as a consequence of the assumptions made, that the universe is many times greater than the universe now so called. His hypotheses are that the fixed stars and the sun remain unmoved, that the earth revolves about the sun in the circumference of a circle." The model is rejected by most ancient astronomers (including Hipparchus) primarily on the grounds that stellar parallax is not observed -- which is correct, because the stars are too distant.
250 BC – 200 BC Archimedes -- the greatest scientist of antiquity Archimedes of Syracuse (c.287-212 BC), though not Alexandrian himself, is deeply connected to the Alexandrian tradition -- he studies there under the scholars of the Museum and corresponds with Alexandrian mathematicians throughout his life. He is widely considered the greatest scientist and mathematician of the ancient world: he determines the value of pi more precisely than anyone before 1,400 years later; discovers the principle of the lever ("Give me a place to stand and I will move the world"); discovers the principle of buoyancy (the "Eureka" moment -- leaping from his bath when he realises displaced water volume equals the object's volume); designs the Archimedean screw (still used in irrigation today); develops methods equivalent to integral calculus 1,900 years before Newton and Leibniz; and designs the war machines that hold off the Roman siege of Syracuse for two years. He is killed by a Roman soldier in 212 BC, reportedly while drawing geometric figures in the sand.
246 BC – 221 BC Ptolemy III Euergetes -- the empire at its height Ptolemy III Euergetes (246-221 BC) rules the Ptolemaic empire at its maximum territorial extent -- an empire including Egypt, Cyrenaica, Cyprus, the Levantine coast, parts of Asia Minor and the Aegean islands. His Third Syrian War (246-241 BC) against the Seleucid Empire takes him to Mesopotamia and is the greatest Ptolemaic military success -- the Canopus Decree (238 BC, found at Tanis in three languages including hieroglyphic) records his victories and cult reforms. He also reportedly steals the sacred statues that Cambyses had taken from Egypt in 525 BC and returns them to their temples -- an act of enormous propaganda value that is recorded on multiple stelae and confirms the Ptolemaic role as restorers of Egyptian religion. He adds the leap year to the Egyptian calendar (the Canopus Decree reform).
221 BC – 205 BC Ptolemy IV Philopator -- decadence and defeat Ptolemy IV Philopator (221-205 BC) represents the beginning of Ptolemaic decline -- a king more interested in literary and religious pursuits than in governance. His Battle of Raphia (217 BC) is the largest Ptolemaic-Seleucid engagement: Ptolemy IV personally leads 73 African elephants against 102 Indian elephants and defeats Antiochus III. But he makes peace without capitalising on his victory. Most significantly, he arms native Egyptian soldiers (machimoi) for the battle -- giving Egyptians military experience that fuels the Great Theban Revolt (206-186 BC) immediately after his death.
200 BC – 150 BC Manetho and Egyptian history -- the dynastic system Manetho of Sebennytos (c.285-246 BC), an Egyptian priest who writes a history of Egypt (the Aegyptiaca) in Greek under Ptolemy I and II, creates the dynastic system still used by Egyptologists -- dividing 3,000 years of pharaonic history into 30 dynasties (a 31st was added later). Manetho's original text is lost; it survives only in excerpts quoted by Josephus, Julius Africanus and Eusebius. His purpose: to explain Egyptian history to a Greek-reading audience and to establish the antiquity and dignity of Egyptian civilisation in relation to other ancient traditions. His dynasties do not always correspond to biological families -- sometimes they represent a change of capital, a change of policy or simply a break in the king list. But his framework is so useful that it has never been replaced: every Egyptologist works with Manetho's dynasty numbers. He also lists the reigns of the pre-dynastic gods, each ruling for thousands of years.
196 BC The Rosetta Stone -- the key to Egypt's past The Rosetta Stone, a granodiorite stele inscribed in 196 BC during the reign of Ptolemy V, is the document that unlocks 3,500 years of Egyptian history. It contains a priestly decree in three scripts: hieroglyphic (the sacred script of temples), demotic (the administrative cursive script) and Greek (the language of the Ptolemaic administration). Since Greek was understood by European scholars, it provided the key to deciphering the other scripts. The stone was found by French soldiers near Rosetta (Rashid) during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign (1799), seized by Britain after the French defeat (1801) and sent to the British Museum (where it remains). Thomas Young identifies phonetic elements (1814-1819); Jean-François Champollion achieves the full decipherment on 14 September 1822, unlocking every hieroglyphic text ever written. The Rosetta Stone's decree gives Ptolemy V divine honours -- a routine priestly business document that accidentally becomes the most important key to the ancient world.
180 BC – 145 BC Ptolemy VI Philometor -- sibling rule Ptolemy VI Philometor (186-145 BC) rules first jointly with his siblings (his mother Cleopatra I acts as regent; then his brother Ptolemy VIII and sister-sister Cleopatra II form a co-regency), then alone after the Seleucid king Antiochus IV invades Egypt (170-168 BC). The Seleucid invasion nearly destroys the Ptolemaic kingdom -- Antiochus IV conquers most of Egypt and besieges Alexandria. He is saved only by Roman intervention: the Roman ambassador Gaius Popilius Laenas draws a circle in the sand around Antiochus and tells him he must decide to leave Egypt before stepping out of the circle (the "Day of Eleusis," 168 BC). This Roman ultimatum -- which Antiochus obeys, because Rome has just destroyed Macedon at Pydna -- is the moment when Rome becomes the dominant power in the eastern Mediterranean and Egypt becomes effectively a Roman client.
145 BC – 116 BC Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II -- the Bloated One Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II (nicknamed "Physcon," the Bloated One, for his extreme obesity) is one of the most controversial Ptolemaic rulers -- a man who massacred the intelligentsia of Alexandria (expelling the scholars of the Museum after a political dispute in 145 BC), married both his sister Cleopatra II and his niece Cleopatra III simultaneously, and yet managed Egypt competently for 54 years. His decree of amnesty (118 BC), inscribed in Greek, demotic and hieroglyphic on a stele from Apollinopolis Magna, is the most important legal document of the Ptolemaic period -- a comprehensive amnesty for all crimes, return of confiscated property and general restoration of order after years of internal conflict. It demonstrates the sophisticated administrative machinery of the Ptolemaic state even when its rulers are violent and unpredictable.
116 BC – 58 BC The Ptolemaic temples -- Egypt's finest legacy The flowering of Ptolemaic temple building (c.300-30 BC) produces the best-preserved temples in Egypt -- complete structures in which the progression from pylon to sanctuary, the orientation of every room, the content of every inscription and the relationship between every ritual space can be fully understood. The key Ptolemaic temples: Edfu (Temple of Horus, 237-57 BC -- the most complete temple in Egypt; its "Building Text" describes the temple's construction and the mythology of its sacred landscape); Dendera (Temple of Hathor, 54 BC-65 AD -- its Zodiac ceiling is the earliest complete representation of the Babylonian zodiac); Kom Ombo (Temple of Sobek and Horus, c.180-47 BC -- uniquely doubled, with twin sanctuaries for two gods side by side); Philae (Temple of Isis, 380 BC-298 AD -- the last active Egyptian temple); and Esna (Temple of Khnum, first reconstructed under Ptolemy III).
80 BC – 58 BC Ptolemy XII Auletes -- the flute player begs Rome Ptolemy XII Auletes (80-58 BC and 55-51 BC, nicknamed "the Flute Player") is the last significant male ruler of the Ptolemaic dynasty and the father of Cleopatra VII. His reign is dominated by desperate attempts to secure Roman recognition of his legitimacy and military support against his own subjects (who expel him twice). He bribes Julius Caesar (the enormous sum of 6,000 talents) to secure Roman recognition in 59 BC. When expelled by Alexandrians who resent his submission to Rome (58 BC), he goes to Rome, bribes the Roman general Gabinius and returns to Egypt with Roman troops (55 BC). He executes his own daughter Berenice IV (who had ruled in his absence) and rules for four more years before dying, leaving the kingdom to Cleopatra VII and her younger brother Ptolemy XIII. His weakness and dependence on Rome define the political situation that Cleopatra VII inherits.
69 BC – 30 BC Cleopatra VII -- the last pharaoh of Egypt Cleopatra VII Philopator (69-30 BC) is the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic dynasty -- the most famous woman of the ancient world and arguably the most politically sophisticated ruler of the Late Ptolemaic period. She is the only Ptolemy in 300 years to learn Egyptian (she also speaks eight other languages: Ethiopic, Troglodytic, Hebrew, Arabic, Syriac, Median and Parthian, according to Plutarch). Her alliances with Julius Caesar (48-44 BC) and Mark Antony (41-30 BC) are not romantic impulses but calculated political strategies to preserve Egyptian independence against Roman power. She bears Caesar a son (Caesarion/Ptolemy XV) and Antony three children. The defeat at Actium (31 BC) and Octavian's invasion (30 BC) end her options. She commits suicide on 12 August 30 BC -- tradition says by allowing an asp to bite her, though the method is uncertain.
51 BC – 30 BC Cleopatra as pharaoh -- the Egyptian queen When Cleopatra VII becomes co-ruler with her father Ptolemy XII (c.52 BC) and then sole ruler (51 BC), she makes a deliberate effort to embrace Egyptian culture in ways no Ptolemy since the first had done. She is the first Ptolemy to learn to speak Egyptian; she adopts the title "Goddess Who Loves Her Father" and later "New Isis." At the great Egyptian temples -- Dendera, Edfu, Philae -- she is depicted in full pharaonic regalia making offerings to the gods. Her appearance at the Buchis bull dedication at Armant (March 51 BC) -- in person, conducting the traditional ceremonies -- is recorded on the Buchis Stele and represents a pharaoh personally participating in a traditional Egyptian religious rite for the first time in decades. Her embrace of Egyptian religion is political (securing the support of the priestly class) but also genuine -- she is the only ruler in 300 years who could actually talk to the Egyptian priests in their own language.
48 BC – 44 BC Caesar and Cleopatra -- the Alexandrian War Julius Caesar arrives in Alexandria in pursuit of his defeated rival Pompey (48 BC), only to find that Pompey has already been assassinated by order of the young Ptolemy XIII and his advisors. He finds Egypt in the middle of a civil war between the siblings Ptolemy XIII and Cleopatra VII. Cleopatra, barred from the palace, famously has herself smuggled to Caesar in a rolled carpet (or a linen sack -- the sources differ). Caesar supports Cleopatra against her brother; Ptolemy XIII's forces besiege Caesar in the palace quarter. During the fighting, Caesar accidentally sets fire to ships in the harbour -- possibly destroying part of the Library (though this is disputed). Ptolemy XIII drowns in the Nile during the final battle. Caesar installs Cleopatra as sole ruler, they begin an affair, and she bears him a son (Caesarion). Caesar tours Egypt by boat with Cleopatra before returning to Rome.
41 BC – 30 BC Antony and Cleopatra -- the last stand Mark Antony and Cleopatra VII form the most celebrated political alliance and romance of the ancient world -- a partnership that lasts 11 years and ends in the destruction of both. Antony, governing the Roman East from Antioch, summons Cleopatra to answer allegations of supporting his enemies (42 BC). She arrives at Tarsus in a golden barge, dressed as Aphrodite, surrounded by boys dressed as Eros -- a theatrical entrance that Plutarch describes as the beginning of the ruin of all things. Their political partnership is real and sustained: she provides him with financial and military support; he gives her eastern territories (including Cyprus, Cyrenaica, and parts of Syria and Lebanon) and acknowledges Caesarion as Caesar's son. The Battle of Actium (31 BC) ends their alliance militarily; their suicides (Antony impales himself on his sword; Cleopatra uses a concealed asp or poison) end it personally.
31 BC Battle of Actium -- the end of the ancient world The Battle of Actium (2 September 31 BC), fought in the Ionian Sea near the Greek promontory of Actium between Octavian's fleet (commanded by Agrippa) and the combined fleet of Antony and Cleopatra, is one of the decisive battles of world history -- the moment when the Roman Republic definitively becomes the Roman Empire, when the Hellenistic world ends and the Roman world begins, and when Egypt's fate as an independent state is sealed. The battle is militarily inconclusive -- Cleopatra's 60 ships break through the battle line and flee to Egypt; Antony follows, abandoning his army. His army and fleet surrender to Octavian within days. Antony and Cleopatra's subsequent suicide gives Octavian Egypt without further fighting. Actium is the end of the long Ptolemaic story.
30 BC Cleopatra's death -- 12 August 30 BC Cleopatra VII commits suicide on 12 August 30 BC -- four days after Antony's death, when it becomes clear that Octavian intends to parade her in his triumph at Rome. She dresses in her royal robes and dies in her tomb, seated on her throne, alongside her two maids Iras and Charmion. The cause of death is unknown: ancient sources most commonly say an asp bite (the royal Egyptian cobra, emblem of the pharaoh); modern scholarship suggests a cocktail of poisons (opium, hemlock, wolfsbane) may be more plausible, since cobras are painful, slow and unreliable. Octavian gives her a royal burial beside Antony -- though the location of the tomb has never been found. Her son Caesarion (Ptolemy XV) is executed. Her three children by Antony are raised by his Roman widow Octavia. Egypt becomes a Roman province. Three thousand years of pharaonic history end.
