Egypt: The Middle Kingdom Timeline

Egypt: The Middle Kingdom 49

2181 BC – 2055 BC First Intermediate Period -- Egypt divided The First Intermediate Period (c.2181-2055 BC) is 126 years of political fragmentation, famine, civil war and cultural disruption following the Old Kingdom collapse. Egypt is divided between the Herakleopolitan Ninth-Tenth Dynasty (ruling from the Middle Egyptian city of Herakleopolis) and the Theban Eleventh Dynasty in the south. The period produces a literature of lamentation -- the Admonitions of Ipuwer describes social chaos: tombs robbed, nobles starving, foreigners everywhere. Yet the First Intermediate Period is not purely catastrophic: provincial arts flourish, literacy spreads beyond the elite, and the political competition between Thebes and Herakleopolis produces the military energy that makes the reunification possible.
2055 BC – 2004 BC Mentuhotep II -- the reunifier Mentuhotep II (c.2055-2004 BC), the fifth pharaoh of the Eleventh Dynasty, is the pharaoh who reunifies Egypt after 126 years of division -- earning the title "He who unites the Two Lands" (Nebhepetre). He defeats the Herakleopolitan dynasty in a decisive campaign c.2040 BC, reunifying Upper and Lower Egypt and restoring the concept of a single pharaonic state. His mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahri on the west bank of Thebes -- a terraced complex built against the cliffs of the Western Desert -- is the first of the great Theban mortuary temples and the direct model for Hatshepsut's later temple on the same site. He also conducts military campaigns in Nubia, Libya and the Sinai, and sends a trading expedition to Punt. He is buried in a tomb cut into the cliff face behind his temple.
2055 BC – 1650 BC Middle Kingdom legacy -- the classical model The Middle Kingdom's legacy is the concept of classical Egypt -- the standard against which later Egyptians measure cultural achievement. The literary works of the Twelfth Dynasty (Sinuhe, the Eloquent Peasant, the Shipwrecked Sailor, the Instructions of Amenemhat) are copied by scribes for 1,000 years. The artistic style of the period -- particularly the psychologically penetrating portrait sculpture of Senusret III -- is revived consciously in the Saite Renaissance of the 7th-6th centuries BC. The administrative innovations (the abolition of hereditary nomarchs by Senusret III, the reorganisation of the bureaucracy) provide the template for later centralised governance. And the Middle Kingdom's engagement with the world -- trade with Punt, conquest of Nubia, diplomatic connections with the Levant and Aegean -- establishes the outward-looking, internationally engaged Egypt that the New Kingdom will develop into an empire.
2055 BC – 1650 BC Middle Kingdom sculpture -- the portrait revolution Middle Kingdom sculpture represents a dramatic break from Old Kingdom idealism -- producing some of the most psychologically penetrating royal portraits in the ancient world. The portraits of Senusret III (heavily lined face, prominent ears, deep-set brooding eyes) and Amenemhat III (intense, somewhat unsettling gaze) depict individuals rather than ideal types -- rulers who seem to carry the weight of governance. This "realistic" style may reflect an ideological shift: the pharaoh is no longer depicted as a remote, perfect divine being but as a careworn, experienced human who bears the burden of maintaining Ma'at. The shift is partly stylistic, partly theological -- reflecting the increased emphasis on the human aspects of kingship that characterises Middle Kingdom royal ideology.
2055 BC – 1650 BC Thebes -- the rise of a new capital Thebes (Egyptian: Waset, "City of the Sceptre"; modern Luxor), located 700km south of Memphis in Upper Egypt, rises from a provincial town to the most important city in Egypt during the Middle Kingdom -- and remains the religious capital for over 1,000 years. The Eleventh Dynasty pharaohs are buried at Thebes (at Deir el-Bahari and in the cliffs of the Western Desert). The Twelfth Dynasty moves the administrative capital north to Itjtawy (near modern Lisht) but Thebes remains the religious centre of the cult of Amun. The New Kingdom pharaohs return to Thebes as their primary residence, building Karnak, Luxor, the Ramesseum, Medinet Habu and the Valley of the Kings on its outskirts. Modern Luxor's skyline is still dominated by the pylons of Karnak and Luxor temples -- the most complete ancient cityscape in the world.
2000 BC – 1650 BC Coffin Texts -- democratising the afterlife The Coffin Texts are a collection of approximately 1,185 funerary spells derived from the Old Kingdom Pyramid Texts but inscribed on the interior surfaces of wooden coffins rather than in pyramid chambers. By making the spells available to non-royal Egyptians (at least those wealthy enough to afford an inscribed coffin), the Coffin Texts represent the "democratisation of the afterlife" -- the extension of afterlife expectation from the royal family to the educated elite. They include a new element not found in the Pyramid Texts: the "Book of Two Ways" -- a map of the afterlife showing two routes (by land and by water) through the underworld to the Field of Reeds (the Egyptian paradise). The Coffin Texts are the immediate precursor of the New Kingdom Book of the Dead.
2000 BC – 1650 BC Middle Kingdom literature -- the golden age of writing The Middle Kingdom is the golden age of Egyptian literature -- producing works that are copied, studied and admired for 1,000 years. The major genres: wisdom literature (the Instructions of Amenemhat I -- a dead king advising his son; the Dialogue of a Man with his Soul -- an Egyptian anticipation of Hamlet's soliloquy, contemplating suicide and finding reasons to live); narrative (the Story of Sinuhe, the Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor -- an Egyptian Odyssey of a merchant stranded on a magical island); poetic and philosophical texts (the Discourse of the Eloquent Peasant -- a poor man delivers 9 increasingly sophisticated speeches pleading for justice to a corrupt official, who delays judgment specifically to enjoy the speeches). These works are not merely entertainment but explorations of Egyptian values, the meaning of Ma'at and the nature of the good life.
2000 BC – 1650 BC The Story of Sinuhe -- Egypt's greatest literature The Story of Sinuhe (c.1875 BC) is the most celebrated work of ancient Egyptian literature -- a narrative that reads with the psychological complexity and narrative sophistication of a modern novel. Sinuhe, a court official, overhears news of the death of Amenemhat I and flees Egypt in panic (fearing implication in a succession struggle). He lives for years as a successful chieftain in Canaan and Syria, fighting duels, raising a family and growing rich. But he yearns for Egypt -- for the ordered world of Ma'at, for a proper burial in Egyptian soil. In old age he is summoned back by Senusret I and restored to royal favour, given a fine house, a pyramid tomb and honorary burial equipment. The story explores themes of exile, identity, the pull of home and the nature of Egyptian identity.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Abydos in the Middle Kingdom -- pilgrimage and festival Abydos, the cult centre of Osiris, is the most sacred site in Middle Kingdom Egypt -- the destination of pilgrims from throughout the country who erect commemorative stelae, chapels and cenotaphs in the "holy land" near the god's tomb. The annual Osiris festival at Abydos (the "Mysteries of Osiris") is the most important religious festival in Egypt -- a dramatic reenactment of Osiris's death, dismemberment, resurrection and triumph over Seth, including a procession of the god's statue on a sacred bark, mock battles between Horus and Seth, and the final triumphant return of Osiris to his temple. Thousands of Egyptians attend; thousands more send commemorative objects. The Abydos stelae of the Middle Kingdom are among the most important sources for Egyptian personal names, titles, family relationships and religious beliefs.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Amenemhat I -- the Instructions of a murdered king Amenemhat I (c.1985-1956 BC), founder of the Twelfth Dynasty, is the subject of one of the most remarkable documents of Egyptian literature -- the "Instructions of Amenemhat," purportedly written by the pharaoh's ghost to his son Senusret I after his assassination: "Be on your guard against subordinates... trust no brother, know no friend, make no intimates." The text describes his betrayal by his own bodyguard while he slept: "It was after supper, when night had come... I was taken unawares, as though I were a serpent of the desert." The assassination of Amenemhat I is the only regicide in Egyptian history (Pepi I was poisoned but survived). His Instructions are extensively copied by New Kingdom scribes -- both as a literary text and as a practical guide to the dangers of power.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Amenemhat II -- trade and diplomacy Amenemhat II (c.1929-1895 BC), third pharaoh of the Twelfth Dynasty, is best known for his trading activities and diplomatic connections. The Mit Rahina Annals (fragments of the official court record of his reign) record extensive trade expeditions to Punt and Byblos, mining operations in Sinai, and the return of prisoners and tribute from military expeditions. The Tod Treasure, found at the temple of Montu at Tod (1936), consists of four copper chests containing Aegean-style silver cups, Babylonian lapis lazuli cylinder seals and Minoan-style silver ingots -- deposited in the name of Amenemhat II. This extraordinary cache demonstrates that Middle Kingdom Egypt was commercially connected with Mesopotamia, the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean simultaneously.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Amun-Ra -- the rise of the hidden god Amun (the "Hidden One") begins as a minor deity of Hermopolis, one of the eight primordial forces of the Ogdoad. His association with Thebes (as the city's patron deity) transforms him when Thebes rises to national power. During the Middle Kingdom, Amun is syncretised with Ra (the supreme solar deity of Heliopolis) to create Amun-Ra -- a composite deity who combines the hiddenness of Amun (wind, breath, the unseen life-force) with the visible power of the sun. The resulting theology is practically monotheistic: Amun-Ra is the "king of the gods" who contains all other deities within himself. By the New Kingdom, the priesthood of Amun at Karnak controls more wealth than the pharaoh -- creating the political conflict that culminates in Akhenaten's religious revolution and, eventually, in the High Priests of Amun ruling Egypt as pharaohs.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Beni Hasan -- provincial art at its finest Beni Hasan, a Middle Kingdom provincial cemetery on the east bank of the Nile in Middle Egypt, contains 39 rock-cut tombs of local nomarchs of the Oryx Nome, decorated with some of the most vibrant paintings in all of Egyptian art. The tomb of Khnumhotep II (c.1897 BC) contains the famous "Arrival of Asiatics" scene -- showing a group of 37 Semitic-speaking people (identified as "the Aamu of Shu") bringing kohl (eye paint) to Egypt, led by a man carrying a striped cloth coat and identified as a "hyksos" (chieftain of a foreign land). This scene is one of the most debated in Egyptology -- is this an early depiction of the biblical story of Joseph and his brothers? The Beni Hasan tombs also contain the most comprehensive depictions of Middle Kingdom sports, wrestling, acrobatics and military training.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Crocodilopolis -- the city of Sobek Crocodilopolis (Egyptian: Shedet; modern Medinet el-Fayum) is the capital of the Fayum nome and the cult centre of Sobek, the crocodile god of fertility, water and the Nile. The living sacred crocodile of Shedet is kept in the temple lake, fed by hand, adorned with gold earrings and jewelled bangles, and treated as a god incarnate. Herodotus and Strabo both describe the remarkable sight of priests opening the animal's jaws to offer food and wine. The crocodile is mummified on its death and replaced with another. Shedet grows into an important city during the Ptolemaic period (when it is renamed Crocodilopolis and then Arsinoe), and the crocodile cemeteries at nearby Tebtunis, Karanis and Medinet Maadi contain thousands of mummified crocodiles and crocodile eggs. The Fayum's papyrus documents (the Tebtunis Papyri) are among the richest sources for Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Egyptian music and dance -- the arts of celebration Music and dance are central to Egyptian religious and social life from the earliest periods -- depicted in tomb paintings, described in literary texts and attested by musical instruments found in archaeological contexts. Egyptian instruments include: harps (from the Old Kingdom; the arched harp is Egypt's most distinctive instrument), lutes (introduced from the Levant in the New Kingdom), flutes and oboes (end-blown and side-blown), sistrums (metal rattles shaken in Hathor's worship), clappers (ivory or bone, shaped like hands), drums (barrel drums and frame drums). Professional musicians are associated with temple worship (particularly Hathor's cult), banquets (where female musicians perform for the guests) and the military (where drummers and trumpeters keep the army in step). The famous "Blind Harper" genre of tomb texts praises pleasure and the present moment.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Egyptian trade with the Levant -- Byblos and beyond The Middle Kingdom period sees a significant expansion of Egyptian trade with the Levant. The city of Byblos (modern Jubayl, Lebanon) has been Egypt's most important trading partner for cedar since the Old Kingdom, but the Middle Kingdom relationship deepens: the local rulers of Byblos adopt Egyptian titles, write their names in hieroglyphs and bury themselves with Egyptian objects. Egyptian scarabs, amulets and statues of this period appear throughout Canaan and Syria. The "Execration Texts" -- ritual pottery vessels and figurines inscribed with the names of Egypt's enemies and ritually smashed or buried -- list dozens of Canaanite place names and chieftains, demonstrating detailed Egyptian knowledge of the political geography of the Levant in the early 2nd millennium BC.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Hathor's temple at Dendera -- origins of a sacred site The Temple of Hathor at Dendera (ancient Iunet), the best-preserved temple in Egypt, has origins reaching back to the Old Kingdom -- but its current structure was built entirely in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. Middle Kingdom pharaohs including Mentuhotep II and Senusret I build earlier structures on the same sacred site, none of which survive. The temple's Ptolemaic reliefs include the famous Dendera Zodiac (now in the Louvre) -- the earliest complete representation of the Babylonian zodiac in Egypt (c.50 BC) -- and images of Cleopatra VII and Ptolemy XV Caesar. The underground crypts of the temple contain inscriptions describing the sacred objects stored there, including the ba-power of Hathor (perhaps a meteorite). The Dendera complex also includes a birth house (mammisi), a sacred lake and a sanatorium where the sick slept to receive healing dreams.
1985 BC – 1795 BC Itjtawy -- the new capital Itjtawy (full name: Amenemhat-itjtawy, "Amenemhat who seizes the Two Lands"), founded by Amenemhat I c.1985 BC near modern Lisht in Middle Egypt, serves as the administrative capital of Egypt throughout the Twelfth Dynasty. Its location -- midway between Memphis (the traditional capital of Lower Egypt) and Thebes (the power base of the reunifying dynasty) -- is deliberately chosen to symbolise national unity. Despite its political importance for nearly 200 years, Itjtawy has never been fully excavated; the site is mostly under cultivation. The pyramids of Amenemhat I and Senusret I (and later Amenemhat II, III and Senusret II, III) are built nearby at Lisht, Dahshur and Lahun, clustered in the region of the new capital.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Karnak -- the temple of Amun begins The great temple complex of Amun-Ra at Karnak (Ipet-Sut, "Most Selected of Places") begins in the Middle Kingdom -- though virtually nothing survives of the original structures, which were demolished and rebuilt by later pharaohs. Senusret I builds the White Chapel (Jubilee Chapel), discovered dismantled inside the Third Pylon and now reconstructed -- one of the finest examples of Middle Kingdom relief sculpture. The basic axis of the Karnak complex is established in the Middle Kingdom, running east-west toward the rising sun. Amenemhat I and the early Twelfth Dynasty pharaohs are the first to build substantially at Karnak. By the New Kingdom, Karnak becomes the largest religious complex in the world -- a 1.5km² site with ten pylons, multiple temples, sacred lakes and thousands of statues.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Lahun -- the pyramid workers' town Kahun (Lahun), built c.1888 BC at the foot of the pyramid of Senusret II in the Fayum, is the best-preserved example of a planned workers' town from the ancient world. Excavated by Flinders Petrie in 1889-90, it reveals a rigorously planned grid of streets -- a large western quarter of spacious houses for officials and a smaller eastern quarter of smaller, densely packed houses for workers. The Kahun Papyri (found at the site) include medical texts (the Gynaecological Papyrus of Kahun -- the oldest medical text dealing with women's health), veterinary texts, mathematical texts, legal documents and letters -- giving the most complete picture of Middle Kingdom daily life of any site. The town was abandoned suddenly c.1800 BC, with many everyday objects left in place.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Meir and Deir el-Bersha -- provincial tombs The rock-cut tombs at Meir (Cusae nome) and Deir el-Bersha (Hermopolis Magna nome), decorated with painted reliefs of exceptional quality in the early Middle Kingdom, are among the finest provincial tombs of any period. Meir contains the tombs of the nomarchs of the Oryx Nome -- the same family depicted at Beni Hasan -- with charming scenes of daily life, hunting and agricultural activities. Deir el-Bersha contains the famous coffin of Djehutyhotep (Twelfth Dynasty), which shows 172 men hauling a colossal statue of the nomarch on a sledge -- one of the most cited images of ancient Egyptian engineering. The tomb also contains the "Book of Two Ways," one of the earliest geographical maps of the afterlife. Both sites are badly damaged but preserve irreplaceable evidence of Middle Kingdom provincial culture.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Middle Kingdom foreign workers -- early cosmopolitanism The Middle Kingdom court and the pyramid sites employ significant numbers of foreign workers -- Nubians, Asiatics, Libyans and Medjai (eastern desert nomads) who are integrated into Egyptian economic and military life. The Medjai Nubians in particular serve as police and military scouts, valued for their tracking and desert survival skills; their role in Egyptian military service continues into the New Kingdom. Asiatics (Canaanites and Syrians) appear in administrative papyri as domestic servants, craftsmen and soldiers. The Brooklyn Papyrus (c.1780 BC), a list of domestic workers from an estate near Thebes, records 77 servants of whom 45 have Asiatic names -- demonstrating the cosmopolitan character of Middle Kingdom society. The Egyptian word "Asia" (Retenu) appears for the first time in Middle Kingdom texts.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Middle Kingdom medicine -- the Kahun Papyrus The Kahun Gynaecological Papyrus (c.1825 BC), found at the workers' town of Kahun by Flinders Petrie in 1889, is the world's oldest surviving medical text dealing specifically with women's health. It contains 34 cases of gynaecological and obstetric conditions, with diagnoses and treatments: uterine prolapse ("a woman who cannot lift herself"), pain during pregnancy ("a woman who has pain in her teeth and her jaws"), and various conditions affecting the reproductive organs. The treatments involve both practical remedies (oil, natron, incense suppositories) and magical invocations. The Kahun Papyrus, together with the later Edwin Smith and Ebers Papyri, demonstrates that Egyptian medicine is simultaneously empirical (careful observation of symptoms) and magical (incantations addressing the spiritual cause of illness).
1985 BC – 1650 BC Middle Kingdom pyramids -- smaller but complex Middle Kingdom pyramids are smaller than Old Kingdom examples -- reflecting reduced royal resources and possibly changed priorities -- but their internal architecture is significantly more complex. The pyramid of Senusret II at Lahun introduces a novel approach: the entrance is not in the north face (the traditional position) but in the south courtyard, disguised among private tombs. The pyramids of Amenemhat III at Dahshur (the Black Pyramid) and Hawara have extraordinarily complex internal labyrinths of dead-end passages, sliding stone barriers and flooded chambers designed to frustrate tomb robbers -- yet all were robbed in antiquity. The core material also changes: instead of solid stone blocks, Middle Kingdom pyramids use a core of mud brick with an outer casing of limestone -- economical but prone to collapse when the casing is removed.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Neferhotep I -- the last strong Thirteenth Dynasty pharaoh Neferhotep I (c.1740-1730 BC) is one of the few well-documented pharaohs of the Thirteenth Dynasty -- a ruling family that maintains nominal control of all Egypt but gradually loses the north to Hyksos penetration. A large stele from Abydos records Neferhotep I's pious concern for the proper maintenance of the Osiris cult -- consulting the ancient books in the royal library at Heliopolis to determine the correct form of the divine statue, then sending craftsmen to carve it from cedar. He conducts military activity in Nubia (where the Nubian king Nedjeh acknowledges his suzerainty) and controls trade on the Nile as far south as Semna. His reign represents the last moment of genuine Thirteenth Dynasty authority before the Second Intermediate Period fragmentation accelerates.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Nubian fortresses -- controlling the south The Middle Kingdom pharaohs (particularly Senusret I-III) build a chain of massive mud-brick fortresses between the First and Second Cataracts of the Nile -- 17 fortresses over 400km of river, the most extensive defensive network of the ancient world to that date. The fortresses (Buhen, Semna, Kumma, Askut, Mirgissa and others) are engineering masterpieces: massive walls up to 10 metres thick, glacis (sloping aprons that prevent undermining), drawbridges, bastions and a sophisticated patrol system. They control movement of Nubian trade goods (gold, ivory, ebony, cattle) through Egypt's southern border. Detailed administrative papyri survive from some fortresses recording daily dispatches: "This servant says: All is well! The garrison is safe and sound. The patrol has returned from the desert... nothing sinister was spotted."
1985 BC – 1650 BC Private devotion -- Middle Kingdom personal religion The Middle Kingdom sees the first evidence of personal piety -- a direct emotional relationship between an individual and a deity, not mediated by the state cult. Small bronze and faience figurines of Osiris, Isis and Horus are found in domestic contexts. Votive offerings (small objects left at a shrine to petition or thank a god) appear at secondary shrines near the major temples. The Coffin Texts democratise access to the afterlife. Some scholars argue that the concept of the personal god -- a deity who takes special interest in an individual -- first appears in Egypt in the Middle Kingdom and influences Mesopotamian and later biblical conceptions of personal religion. The Middle Kingdom's literature also shows individuals questioning religious orthodoxy (the Dialogue of a Man with his Soul) in ways that would be unthinkable in the Old Kingdom.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Punt expeditions -- the Land of the Gods The Land of Punt (Egyptian: Ta Netjer, "Land of the Gods") is one of the most mysterious places in Egyptian geography -- a source of incense, myrrh, frankincense, ebony, electrum, short-horned cattle, dogs, baboons and exotic trees that Egyptians prize above almost any other luxury. Punt expeditions are attested from the Old Kingdom through the New Kingdom. The Middle Kingdom conducts several expeditions to Punt from the Red Sea port of Mersa Gawasis (where 2006 excavations found the world's oldest manmade harbour and the remains of the wooden frames of seafaring boats). The location of Punt is debated -- most scholars place it in the area of modern Eritrea, Djibouti or northern Somalia. The "Puntites" depicted in Egyptian reliefs have distinctive features suggesting sub-Saharan African origin.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Scarabs -- the beetle of regeneration The scarab (dung beetle, Scarabaeus sacer) is one of the most characteristic symbols of ancient Egypt -- a symbol of regeneration, transformation and the rising sun. The Egyptians observe the dung beetle rolling a ball of dung across the ground and laying its eggs in it (the larvae emerging from the dung as if from nowhere) and interpret this as a symbol of the sun rolling across the sky and of spontaneous self-creation. The scarab amulet (a beetle figure in blue-green faience, steatite or semiprecious stone) is the most common amulet in ancient Egypt, worn for protection by the living and placed over the heart of the mummified dead. Administrative scarabs (inscribed with royal names and used as seals) are an important archaeological dating tool -- thousands survive from every period of Egyptian history.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Semna dispatches -- bureaucracy at the frontier The Semna Dispatches are a collection of official military communications sent from the Nubian frontier fortresses to the pharaoh's court during the reign of Amenemhat III (c.1855-1808 BC), preserved in copies at Thebes. They are brief, formulaic reports from the commanders of the Semna and Kumma fortresses: "Soldier [name] reports: All affairs of the King's domain are sound and prosperous... the patrol of the army which went to patrol the desert edge of the Nile... returned safely, having seen no trace of the enemy anywhere." These dispatches are among the earliest military field reports in history -- a reminder that the massive fortresses of the Second Cataract are actively maintained by professional soldiers sending daily reports through a bureaucratic chain of command to the pharaoh.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Senusret I's White Chapel -- masterpiece of relief The White Chapel (Jubilee Chapel) of Senusret I, discovered in the 1920s dismantled and used as fill inside the Third Pylon at Karnak, has been painstakingly reconstructed and now stands in the Karnak Open Air Museum -- one of the finest examples of Middle Kingdom relief sculpture in existence. The chapel is a small open structure of polished limestone, its surfaces covered in finely carved reliefs of extraordinary precision and delicacy: scenes of the pharaoh being embraced by the gods, receiving the symbols of jubilee from Amun, running the Heb-Sed course and performing other rituals. The inscriptions include the oldest complete list of the 42 nomes of Egypt with their patron deities, capitals and dimensions -- a virtual census of Egyptian administrative geography in the early 2nd millennium BC.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Senusret II -- the hydraulic engineer Senusret II (c.1897-1878 BC) is the Twelfth Dynasty pharaoh most associated with the development of the Fayum -- building the Lake Moeris barrage and a system of canals and dikes that regulates the flow of Nile water into the Fayum depression, draining large areas for agriculture and creating an enormous natural reservoir. His pyramid is at Lahun (el-Lahun), where the surrounding pyramid town (Kahun) is the best-documented example of a Middle Kingdom settlement. Senusret II's Fayum irrigation works are, in scale and engineering sophistication, comparable to the Roman hydraulic engineering projects of 1,500 years later. The Fayum under Senusret II becomes one of the most productive agricultural regions in the ancient world.
1985 BC – 1650 BC The Amenemhat Instructions -- a father's political testament The Instruction of Amenemhat (c.1960 BC), written in the voice of the assassinated pharaoh Amenemhat I addressing his son and successor Senusret I, is one of the most politically cynical texts in ancient Egyptian literature -- and simultaneously one of the most elegant. The assassinated king advises total distrust of everyone: "Do not trust a brother, do not know a friend, do not make intimates, for they serve no purpose." He describes his own assassination with bitter clarity and warns his son that power is ultimately solitary. The Instructions are extensively copied in New Kingdom school exercises -- their cynical wisdom apparently considered appropriate training for future officials. They represent an unusual moment of royal vulnerability in an official literature that normally presents the pharaoh as invincible and divinely sustained.
1985 BC – 1650 BC The Dialogue of a Man with his Soul -- Egyptian Hamlet The Dialogue of a Man with his Soul (also called the "Dispute of a Man Who Contemplates Suicide with his Ba," c.2000 BC) is one of the most philosophically sophisticated texts of the ancient world -- an Egyptian prefiguring of Hamlet's soliloquy. A man, weary of suffering and injustice, contemplates suicide as a release from a meaningless world. His ba (soul) argues against this, warning that death offers no guarantee of peace. The man responds with four poems on the miseries of life, comparing death to recovery from illness, to the smell of lotus flowers, to walking in the rain after a drought. The ba eventually agrees that life's suffering is real -- but urges continued engagement rather than death. The text's willingness to engage with despair, meaninglessness and the limits of religious consolation is extraordinary for any ancient culture.
1985 BC – 1650 BC The Eloquent Peasant -- justice and rhetoric The Tale of the Eloquent Peasant (c.1900 BC) is one of the masterpieces of Middle Kingdom literature -- a story in which a poor peasant from the Wadi Natrun, robbed of his goods by a corrupt official's steward, delivers nine increasingly eloquent speeches to the High Steward Rensi pleading for justice. The speeches are so beautiful that Rensi delays judgment specifically to hear more, while secretly passing the speeches to Pharaoh. The peasant's rhetoric combines passionate appeals to Ma'at (justice/cosmic order), devastating logical arguments and poetic imagery of great power: "Do justice for the sake of the Lord of Justice... Ma'at is a great storehouse; no one who enters it comes out short." In the end justice is served. The text is simultaneously a work of political philosophy, a rhetoric manual and a literary tour de force.
1985 BC – 1650 BC The Execration Texts -- ritualising foreign threats The Execration Texts are ritual documents in which Egypt's foreign enemies are magically neutralised -- the enemies' names written on pottery bowls or clay figurines, which are then ritually smashed or buried, destroying the enemies by sympathetic magic. The Middle Kingdom Execration Texts (particularly the Berlin and Brussels groups, c.1900-1800 BC) list hundreds of foreign rulers and places by name, providing our most complete picture of the political geography of the ancient Near East in the early 2nd millennium BC: dozens of Canaanite city-states, Nubian chiefs, Libyan clans and the names of foreign rulers with whom Egypt is in competition. They also list internal enemies -- Egyptians who might rebel -- demonstrating that the ritual is used against domestic as well as foreign threats.
1985 BC – 1650 BC The Fayum -- Egypt's garden The Fayum oasis, a natural depression in the desert southwest of Cairo connected to the Nile by a channel (the Bahr Yusuf), is one of Egypt's most productive agricultural regions -- known in antiquity as the "Garden of Egypt." The Middle Kingdom pharaohs (particularly Amenemhat I and III) undertake massive hydraulic engineering works in the Fayum: building dikes, canals and regulators to drain part of the natural lake (Lake Moeris, modern Birket Qarun) and reclaim thousands of acres of rich agricultural land. The Fayum region becomes the most intensively cultivated area of Egypt -- famous for its wine, olive oil, fruit and fish. In the Ptolemaic period, the Fayum is the most densely populated and prosperous part of Egypt, and the source of the remarkable Fayum mummy portraits -- the most naturalistic paintings of the ancient world.
1985 BC – 1650 BC The Khnumhotep inscription -- longest in the Middle Kingdom The tomb inscription of Khnumhotep II at Beni Hasan (c.1897 BC) is the longest autobiographical inscription of the Middle Kingdom -- a detailed account of the life and achievements of a powerful nomarch of the Oryx nome. It records the boundaries of his province (fixed by the pharaoh as a "royal decree in the hall of columns"), his descent from previous nomarchs, his appointments, his building works and his trading expeditions to Nubia and the Sinai. The inscription is remarkable for its personal, anecdotal quality -- recording specific conversations with the pharaoh, specific incidents in his career, and the emotional satisfaction of a life well lived in service of Ma'at. It also contains the "Arrival of Asiatics" scene -- perhaps the earliest depiction of Semitic-speaking people in Egyptian art.
1985 BC – 1650 BC The Rhind Mathematical Papyrus -- Egyptian arithmetic The Rhind Mathematical Papyrus (c.1650 BC, copied from a Middle Kingdom original of c.1850 BC), purchased by the Scottish Egyptologist Alexander Rhind at Luxor in 1858 and now in the British Museum, is the most complete source for ancient Egyptian mathematics. It contains 87 mathematical problems and solutions demonstrating: arithmetic by successive doubling; fraction computation (all fractions expressed as sums of unit fractions); area calculation for triangles, rectangles and circles (using a value of pi equivalent to approximately 3.16); volume calculation for cylinders; and the "method of false position" for solving linear equations. The papyrus begins: "Accurate reckoning -- the entrance into the knowledge of all existing things and all obscure secrets." Egyptian mathematics is practical rather than theoretical, but sufficient for all the engineering tasks of the pharaonic state.
1985 BC – 1650 BC The Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor -- Egyptian Odyssey The Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor (c.2000-1800 BC) is the earliest surviving Egyptian narrative of adventure and the supernatural -- an "Egyptian Odyssey" in which a sailor is shipwrecked on a magical island inhabited by a giant serpent covered in gold, lapis lazuli and turquoise. The serpent, speaking excellent Egyptian, is kind to the sailor and sends him home laden with gifts after 4 months on the island. The serpent's island -- clearly Punt or somewhere on the Red Sea -- then sinks beneath the waves: "Stranger! You must be brave; for this island will never be seen again." The tale works on several levels: as adventure story, as meditation on fortune and misfortune, and as a philosophical reflection on the nature of hope and consolation. It is the oldest known story with a framing narrative (a story within a story).
1985 BC – 1795 BC The Twelfth Dynasty -- the classical age The Twelfth Dynasty (1985-1795 BC) is widely considered the golden age of ancient Egypt -- eight pharaohs over 190 years who build a powerful, centralised, outward-looking state. The dynasty alternates between the names Amenemhat (Amun is foremost) and Senusret (Man of goddess Wosret) -- four pharaohs of each name. They build pyramid complexes in the Fayum region and at Dahshur, conduct major military campaigns in Nubia (establishing a chain of massive mud-brick fortresses at the Second Cataract) and in Canaan, drain the Fayum depression to create vast new agricultural land, and preside over the greatest literary flowering in Egyptian history. Later Egyptians regard the Twelfth Dynasty as the model of proper kingship -- Middle Kingdom texts are copied by schoolboys for 1,000 years.
1985 BC – 1650 BC Wepwawet and Anubis -- gods of death and protection Wepwawet ("Opener of Ways") and Anubis are two of the most important funerary deities in the Egyptian pantheon, both depicted as canids (Wepwawet as a wolf or jackal, Anubis as a black jackal or dog). Wepwawet is the older deity -- a god of the military and of the royal procession as well as of death -- who leads the deceased through the underworld and "opens the ways" to the afterlife. Anubis is the god of embalming and mummification -- the patron of the embalmers who preserve the body -- and the guide who leads the deceased to judgment and supervises the Weighing of the Heart. Both gods are particularly associated with Abydos (Wepwawet's cult centre) and with the Western Desert. The black colour of Anubis is not the colour of death but of the fertile black soil of the Nile -- the colour of regeneration and new life.
1971 BC – 1926 BC Senusret I -- the conqueror of Nubia Senusret I (c.1971-1926 BC), second pharaoh of the Twelfth Dynasty, is one of the most militarily active Middle Kingdom rulers -- conducting multiple campaigns in Nubia and Libya. He establishes Egyptian control over Lower Nubia, destroying Nubian settlements and constructing fortresses at strategic river positions. His building programme is exceptional: at Karnak he constructs the White Chapel (Jubilee Chapel) -- now rebuilt from blocks found inside the Third Pylon -- whose reliefs are among the finest of the Middle Kingdom. He also constructs obelisks at Heliopolis; one still stands, the oldest standing obelisk in Egypt (at 20.4 metres). The Story of Sinuhe, the most celebrated work of Egyptian literature, is set during Senusret I's reign.
1878 BC – 1839 BC Senusret III -- the warrior king Senusret III (c.1878-1839 BC) is the most militarily formidable pharaoh of the Middle Kingdom -- conducting four major campaigns in Nubia (penetrating to the Third Cataract) and establishing a network of massive mud-brick fortresses at Buhen, Semna, Kumma and other sites that control river traffic and project Egyptian power deep into Nubian territory. He also campaigns in Canaan (the first time an Egyptian king personally leads an army into Asia) and is the first pharaoh to completely dismantle the hereditary nomarch system, reorganising Egypt into three administrative departments. His portrait sculpture breaks dramatically from Old Kingdom conventions: the deeply lined face, heavy-lidded eyes and downturned mouth of his surviving portraits convey a sense of brooding, careworn authority that no previous Egyptian pharaoh's image has suggested.
1855 BC – 1808 BC Amenemhat III -- the pyramid builder and Fayum engineer Amenemhat III (c.1855-1808 BC) is the last great pharaoh of the Twelfth Dynasty and the builder of the most ambitious irrigation project in ancient Egypt. He drains much of the Fayum depression -- a lake-bed southwest of Cairo -- creating thousands of acres of new agricultural land, and builds the "Labyrinth" (probably his mortuary temple at Hawara), which the Greek travellers Herodotus and Strabo describe as more impressive than the pyramids. Herodotus counts 3,000 rooms above and below ground; Strabo calls it the most wonderful thing he has ever seen. Amenemhat III builds two pyramids -- at Dahshur (the Black Pyramid, which sank into the ground due to poor foundations) and at Hawara (completed). The transition from his reign to the Thirteenth Dynasty is one of the most debated problems in Egyptian chronology.
1795 BC – 1650 BC Second Intermediate Period -- fragmentation again The Second Intermediate Period (c.1795-1550 BC) is the second great collapse of Egyptian centralised power -- spanning approximately 145 years in which Egypt is divided among multiple competing dynasties. The Thirteenth Dynasty at Thebes nominally rules all Egypt but loses effective control of the Delta; the Fourteenth Dynasty rules the eastern Delta independently; the Fifteenth (Hyksos) Dynasty rules the western Delta and eventually most of Lower Egypt; the Sixteenth Dynasty is a minor Hyksos line; the Seventeenth Dynasty rules Thebes in the south. The period is less catastrophic than the First Intermediate Period -- trade continues, the arts develop, bureaucratic traditions persist -- but the loss of national unity and the shock of foreign rule in the north motivates the Theban Seventeenth Dynasty's war of liberation under Seqenenre Tao and Kamose.
1650 BC – 1550 BC Kamose -- the liberation begins Kamose (c.1555-1550 BC), the last pharaoh of the Theban Seventeenth Dynasty, is the pharaoh who begins the active military campaign to expel the Hyksos from Egypt. The Kamose Stele (found at Karnak in 1954) records his decision to go to war despite the advice of his council (who suggest accepting the status quo) and his campaign northward through Egypt: "Why do I contemplate my strength while a chieftain is in Avaris and another in Kush, and I sit between an Asiatic and a Nubian, each man having his slice of Egypt?" He advances north, disrupting Hyksos trade and threatening Avaris before being called back by a Nubian attack in the south. He dies before completing the liberation -- that task falls to his brother and successor Ahmose I.
1650 BC – 1550 BC The Hyksos -- foreign kings in the Delta The Hyksos (Egyptian: Heqa-khaseshet, "Rulers of Foreign Lands") are a people of West Asian origin who establish the Fifteenth Dynasty in the Nile Delta (c.1650-1550 BC) -- the second great foreign occupation of Egypt (after the Nubians of the 25th Dynasty). The Hyksos introduce revolutionary military technology: the horse-drawn chariot, the composite bow, bronze weapons, new crops (pomegranate, olive, horses) and new musical instruments (the lute). Traditional Egyptian sources depict the Hyksos as violent invaders who "ruled without Ra" -- but archaeological evidence suggests a more gradual process of demographic movement and political consolidation. The Hyksos capital Avaris (modern Tell el-Dab'a) in the eastern Delta has Canaanite-style architecture and art alongside Egyptian material. The expulsion of the Hyksos by Ahmose I c.1550 BC initiates the New Kingdom.
1560 BC – 1550 BC Seqenenre Tao -- the king who died fighting Seqenenre Tao (c.1560 BC), the penultimate pharaoh of the Theban Seventeenth Dynasty, is the pharaoh who begins the war of liberation against the Hyksos. His mummy, discovered in the Deir el-Bahari cache in 1881, shows catastrophic injuries: multiple axe and spear blows to the skull that left him dead or dying on the battlefield (or possibly executed). Analysis of the weapons marks is consistent with Hyksos-type axes. Recent CT scanning (2021) confirms the injuries were perimortem (at or around death) and that his hands were bound -- suggesting capture followed by execution, rather than death in battle. Seqenenre Tao's death galvanises the Theban resistance: his son Kamose continues the war, and his other son Ahmose I finally expels the Hyksos c.1550 BC, founding the New Kingdom.
