The Aztec Empire Timeline

The Aztec Empire 49

1300 – 1325 Aztlan -- the mythic homeland Aztlan ("Place of Herons" or "Place of Whiteness") is the legendary ancestral homeland of the Mexica -- a mythic island or northern territory from which they begin their long southward migration c.1111 AD (in their own tradition) or c.1250 AD (in archaeological terms). The location of Aztlan is unknown and may never have existed as a specific place; it functions in Mexica tradition as the Eden or Troy of their cultural memory -- a place of origin that legitimises their identity and mission. The migration narrative -- a god-directed journey southward, guided by the deity Huitzilopochtli ("Hummingbird of the South") speaking through his priests -- is the founding myth of Aztec civilisation. It explains why a people who arrive as wandering strangers in the most politically complex region of Mesoamerica are nonetheless the chosen people of the sun god, destined to rule.
1325 Tenochtitlan founded -- 1325 Tenochtitlan ("Place of the Prickly Pear Cactus") is founded c.1325 on a small island in the western part of Lake Texcoco in the Valley of Mexico -- according to Mexica tradition, on the spot where the wanderers see an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a serpent, the sign promised by Huitzilopochtli to mark the end of their migration. The site is unpromising: a swampy island with no agricultural land, no stone, no timber. But it is defensible (access only by causeway), centrally located in the lake system, and unclaimed by the powerful valley states. The Mexica immediately begin reclaiming land from the lake with the chinampas technique -- building up artificial islands of layered vegetation and mud. Within a century the island is 13 square kilometres and growing. The eagle-and-serpent founding symbol remains the central image on the Mexican flag today.
1372 – 1427 The Mexica under Tepanec domination For the first century of their existence in the Valley of Mexico, the Mexica are vassals of the powerful Tepanec kingdom of Azcapotzalco -- paying tribute, providing military service and intermarrying with Tepanec nobility to gain legitimacy. The Tepanec ruler Tezozomoc (c.1372-1427) is the dominant political figure of the valley -- a brilliant, ruthless monarch who uses the Mexica as shock troops to expand his empire while keeping them dependent. The Mexica tlatoani (speaker/ruler) Chimalpopoca is a Tepanec puppet. This subordination shapes the Mexica psyche: the fierce independence and imperial ambition of later Aztec culture is partly a reaction against the memory of vassalage. When Tezozomoc dies in 1427 and his son Maxtla attempts to reassert Tepanec dominance, the Mexica -- allied with Texcoco and Tlacopan -- revolt and destroy Azcapotzalco.
1400 – 1521 Nezahualcoyotl -- the poet-king of Texcoco Nezahualcoyotl ("Fasting Coyote," 1402-1472) is the greatest tlatoani of Texcoco and arguably the most remarkable individual of the pre-conquest Americas -- a military leader, legal reformer, architect, philosopher and poet who rules Texcoco for 41 years and is still remembered today primarily for his poems. His legal code (40 laws covering civil, criminal and military matters) is the most sophisticated legal system in Mesoamerica. His architectural achievements include the great palace of Texcoco (described by Spanish observers as more impressive than anything in Spain), a massive dike across Lake Texcoco, and extensive botanical gardens. His poetry -- 36 surviving compositions -- grapples with questions of divine mystery, human transience and the nature of the good life with a philosophical sophistication unmatched in the pre-Columbian world. He appears to have developed a personal theology approaching monotheism -- worshipping an unnamed "Giver of Life" (Ipalnemohuani) as the supreme unknowable deity.
1428 – 1521 Aztec art -- feathers, jade and gold Aztec art is characterised by a combination of monumental stone sculpture (massive, dynamically powerful), elaborate feather-work (among the most technically demanding textile art in the world), gold and silver casting, turquoise mosaic work, and ceramic production. The most celebrated surviving works: the Sunstone (Aztec "Calendar Stone," a 3.6-metre basalt disc carved c.1427, discovered in Mexico City in 1790 and now in the National Museum of Anthropology); the Coatlicue statue (a terrifying 2.7-metre representation of the earth goddess, combining life and death in a single form); the Coyolxauhqui Stone (a massive relief of the moon goddess dismembered by Huitzilopochtli, discovered 1978); and the Mexica feather headdress (Quetzalapanecayotl) in Vienna -- the most spectacular example of Aztec feather-work, made from approximately 400 quetzal feathers each 40-70cm long, possibly the gift from Moctezuma to Cortés and thence to the Habsburgs. Mexico has been requesting its return since 1991.
1428 – 1521 Aztec education -- the calmecac and telpochcalli The Aztec state maintains one of the most comprehensive compulsory education systems of any pre-modern culture. Every child -- male or female, noble or commoner -- is enrolled in a school from approximately age 15. The calmecac ("house of tears") is the elite school, attached to temple precincts, training future priests, scribes, judges, military commanders and administrators -- a rigorous curriculum of astronomy, history, law, ritual, military training and the pictographic writing system. The telpochcalli ("house of youth") trains commoner boys in warfare, physical endurance and community service. Girls attend the cuicacalli ("house of song") for training in weaving, cooking, ritual singing and dance. Education is compulsory and state-funded -- unique in the pre-Columbian world. The Florentine Codex describes the content and methods in detail. The system produces the literate administrators, skilled craftsmen and effective warriors that sustain the empire.
1428 – 1521 Aztec medicine -- herbalism and surgery Aztec medicine combines empirical herbalism (the Mexica have an extraordinarily detailed knowledge of medicinal plants) with ritual healing (disease understood as caused by supernatural forces requiring ritual intervention). The Florentine Codex Book 11 ("Earthly Things") catalogues hundreds of plants with their medicinal uses; the 16th-century Badianus Manuscript (an illustrated herbal compiled by an indigenous physician) lists remedies for conditions from fever to hair loss, using plants from throughout Mesoamerica. Aztec surgeons can set bones, suture wounds and treat skin conditions with considerable skill. The temascal (sweat bath) is used both medicinally and ritually. The tonalpohualli (260-day ritual calendar) assigns each day to a deity associated with specific body parts and diseases -- the healer must know which deity is causing the illness to prescribe the correct ritual treatment alongside the herbal remedy. Post-conquest epidemics devastate this tradition: the herbs survive, but the practitioners who know their use are killed by disease alongside everyone else.
1428 – 1521 Aztec music -- drums, flutes and the human voice Music (cuicatl -- the same word as "poetry") is central to Aztec religious and social life. The primary instruments: the huehuetl (large upright drum played with the hands -- the deepest and most sacred sound in Aztec music), the teponaztli (horizontal two-toned slit drum played with rubber-tipped sticks), the tlapitzalli (clay or bone flute), the chicahuaztli (rattle), the tetzilacatl (large copper gong) and the atecocolli (conch shell trumpet used for military and ritual signals). The drum beat of the huehuetl atop the Templo Mayor could be heard, Bernal Díaz says, 3 leagues away. Music is performed by trained specialists attached to the calmecac and the cuicacalli (house of song). All major ceremonies include music, song and dance as integral components -- not entertainment but sacred action. Making an error in the performance of a ritual song is a serious religious offense.
1428 – 1521 Aztec poetry -- flowers and song Aztec poetry (cuicatl, "song/poem") is one of the most sophisticated literary traditions of the pre-Columbian world -- a rich body of lyric, epic, ritual and philosophical verse, most of it composed in the century before the conquest and preserved in post-conquest collections (notably the Cantares Mexicanos and the Romances de los Señores de la Nueva España). The characteristic genres: xochicuicatl ("flower songs" -- lyric poems meditating on the brevity of life, the beauty of nature, the transience of fame); teocuicatl (sacred hymns for ritual performance); and yaocuicatl (war songs). The great poet-king Nezahualcoyotl of Texcoco (1402-1472) is the most celebrated composer -- his surviving 36 poems are among the most philosophically profound works of the ancient Americas, wrestling with questions of transience, divine mystery and the meaning of beauty. "Is it true that one lives on earth? Not forever on earth, only a little while here. Though it be crystal it will shatter."
1428 – 1521 Cacao -- the divine drink Cacao (Theobroma cacao, "food of the gods") is the most prized luxury commodity in the Aztec world -- used as currency, offered to the gods, and consumed as a bitter frothy drink (chocolatl) by the elite. Cacao beans serve as the standard unit of small-denomination currency in Aztec markets: 100 beans buy a cloak; 30 buy a rabbit; 10 buy a tamale. The drink is prepared by mixing ground cacao with water, chili, vanilla, achiote and other spices, then poured back and forth between vessels to create froth (the most prized part). It is consumed cold (unlike European hot chocolate). Moctezuma II reportedly drinks 50 cups per day from golden vessels. Cacao trees do not grow in the Valley of Mexico -- it is imported as tribute from the Gulf coast and the Pacific lowlands, making it a commodity that flows through the entire tribute system. The Aztec cacao tradition, introduced to Spain by Cortés's expedition, transforms into European chocolate.
1428 – 1521 Eagle Warriors and Jaguar Warriors -- the military elite The cuauhtli (Eagle Warriors) and ocelomeh (Jaguar Warriors) are the two elite military orders of the Aztec army -- warriors who have captured four or more enemies in battle and are rewarded with distinctive costumes, privileges and a position in the imperial warrior hierarchy. The Eagle Warriors wear eagle-head helmets and feathered suits; the Jaguar Warriors wear jaguar skins over their entire body, the animal's head forming their helmet. Both orders have their own temples in the Templo Mayor precinct (the "Eagle Warriors' House," discovered in 1981, contains some of the finest Aztec polychrome sculpture ever found). They are not a standing army in the modern sense but a permanent professional class that forms the backbone of the imperial military machine, supplemented by mass levies of commoner warriors for major campaigns. Achieving Eagle or Jaguar Warrior status is the highest ambition of the Aztec male warrior class.
1428 – 1521 Huitzilopochtli -- the sun god demands blood Huitzilopochtli ("Hummingbird of the South") is the patron deity of the Mexica -- the solar deity and god of war who guides their migration, chooses their capital, and demands the constant nourishment of human blood to maintain the sun's daily journey across the sky. He is a uniquely Mexica deity (unlike most of the Aztec pantheon, which is shared with earlier Mesoamerican cultures). His origin myth is dramatic: he is born fully armed on Coatepec ("Serpent Mountain") to the earth goddess Coatlicue and immediately defeats his 400 siblings (the stars and the moon), establishing the dominance of the sun over the night sky. This myth is reenacted cosmically each dawn and ritually each time a sacrificial victim's heart is offered to the sun. The Templo Mayor at Tenochtitlan -- the empire's most sacred building -- is dedicated jointly to Huitzilopochtli (south side) and Tlaloc the rain god (north side).
1428 – 1521 Human sacrifice -- the debt to the sun Human sacrifice (nextlahualli, "debt payment") is the most widely known and most misunderstood aspect of Aztec religion. For the Mexica it is not cruelty but cosmic obligation: the gods sacrificed themselves to create the current world (the Fifth Sun) and to set the sun in motion, and humanity owes an ongoing debt that must be paid in the most valuable currency -- human life. The primary ritual is heart extraction: the victim (typically a captured warrior) is held over a sacrificial stone, the chest opened with an obsidian knife, and the heart removed and offered to the sun while still beating. The scale is genuinely disputed: Spanish colonial sources give figures of tens of thousands annually; modern demographic calculations suggest the true figure is considerably lower, perhaps 10,000-20,000 per year across the empire. The victims are considered to die honourably, achieving a privileged afterlife. The practice is real, documented and central to Aztec religion; its exact scale remains debated.
1428 – 1521 Nahuatl -- the language of empire Nahuatl (the language of the Mexica and many related peoples) is the lingua franca of the Aztec empire -- spoken by the ruling class, used in trade and administration, and spreading throughout Mesoamerica as the empire expands. It is a polysynthetic language -- words are built by adding multiple morphemes to a stem, allowing single words to express what English requires entire sentences for. Nahuatl literature is extensive: poetry, historical narrative, religious hymns, philosophical dialogue and practical texts survive in both pre-conquest pictographic form and post-conquest alphabetic transcriptions. The Nahuatl word "tlatoani" (ruler) literally means "one who speaks" -- reflecting the centrality of eloquent speech to political authority. Nahuatl is still spoken by approximately 1.7 million people in Mexico today, making it the most widely spoken indigenous language in the country. Dozens of Nahuatl words have entered English: chocolate, tomato, avocado, chili, coyote, ocelot, axolotl.
1428 – 1521 Obsidian -- the sharpest blade in the world Obsidian (volcanic glass) is the most important technological material of Aztec civilisation -- used for cutting tools, weapons, mirrors, razors and ritual objects. An obsidian blade, freshly knapped, has an edge a molecule thick -- sharper than the sharpest surgical steel -- and is used for everything from the harvest to heart extraction. The Valley of Mexico sits above one of the richest obsidian deposits in the world (particularly Pachuca, source of the distinctive green-gold "Pachuca" obsidian that is both the finest tool material and a prestige good). Obsidian working is a highly specialised craft requiring years of training; the master knapper (toltecatl) can produce razor-thin blades from a prepared core by pressure flaking. The macuahuitl (war club) -- a flat wooden sword with obsidian blades embedded along the edges -- can cut off a horse's head in a single blow (Bernal Díaz records this with some shock). Obsidian working is virtually extinct in Mexico today; the tradition largely dies with the conquest.
1428 – 1521 Quetzalcoatl -- the feathered serpent Quetzalcoatl ("Feathered Serpent") is one of the oldest and most widely venerated deities in Mesoamerica -- a creator god, patron of wind, learning, the calendar, the priesthood and civilised arts, worshipped from the Preclassic period through the Aztec empire. He is the opposite of Huitzilopochtli: a deity who opposes human sacrifice, preferring offerings of butterflies and hummingbirds. The historical figure Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl (c.947-999 AD) -- a priestly ruler of Tula who is deified as Quetzalcoatl after his exile -- is conflated with the god, creating the legend of the feathered serpent king who will return in the year One Reed (Ce Acatl). Whether the Spanish use of this legend (Cortés as returning Quetzalcoatl) is historically significant or a post-conquest Spanish invention has been one of Mesoamerican history's most debated questions. Most modern scholars consider it a Spanish-era construct; a minority maintain it influenced Moctezuma's initial response to Cortés.
1428 – 1521 Tenochtitlan -- the Venice of the New World Tenochtitlan at its height (c.1500-1519) is one of the greatest cities in the world -- larger than any contemporary European city except Constantinople and possibly Paris. Its population is estimated at 200,000-300,000 within the city and 1,000,000 in the metropolitan area of the lake system. The city is built on an island connected to the mainland by three great causeways (each wide enough for ten horsemen to ride abreast); a great dike 16km long protects the city from flooding. The city's grid of streets is matched by canals (earning it the "Venice of the New World" comparison from Spanish observers). The Templo Mayor complex at its centre -- a great pyramid 60 metres high with twin temples on top -- dominates the skyline. The Tlatelolco market (in the northern quarter) sells every commodity in Mesoamerica; Cortés says he has seen nothing to equal it in Spain.
1428 – 1521 Teotihuacan -- the ghost city that haunts the Aztecs Teotihuacan ("Place Where the Gods Were Made"), the vast pre-Aztec city 40km northeast of Tenochtitlan, is the most important archaeological site in Mesoamerica and the most significant influence on Aztec culture -- despite having been abandoned approximately 700 years before the Aztec empire. At its height (c.100-550 AD) Teotihuacan is the sixth-largest city in the world, with a population of 125,000-200,000. Its Pyramid of the Sun (65 metres high) and Pyramid of the Moon, aligned along the Avenue of the Dead, are the largest pre-Columbian structures in the Americas. The Aztecs believe Teotihuacan is where the current world (the Fifth Sun) was created -- it is their sacred origin site, their Vatican and Jerusalem simultaneously. They make regular pilgrimages there, collect its ancient artifacts as sacred objects, and model their own architecture on its forms. The identity of the people who built it (and why they abandoned it) remains one of archaeology's greatest mysteries.
1428 – 1521 The Aztec afterlife -- destination by manner of death Unlike many ancient cultures where the afterlife destination depends on moral conduct, Aztec afterlife destinations are determined by the manner of death. Those who die in battle (or on the sacrificial stone) join the sun in its eastern journey; women who die in childbirth join the sun in its western journey; those who drown or die of water-related diseases go to Tlalocan (the paradise of Tlaloc the rain god); infants who die before eating solid food go to Omeyocan (a paradise of nursing mothers); and the majority of ordinary people (who die of disease, old age or accident) go to Mictlan, the nine-level underworld ruled by Mictlantecuhtli. The journey to Mictlan takes four years and requires a series of ordeals; the body is buried with provisions for the journey. The moral dimension of Egyptian or later Christian afterlife theology is largely absent -- the Aztec afterlife reflects cosmological function rather than ethical judgment.
1428 – 1521 The Aztec calendar -- two interlocking wheels The Aztec calendar system, inherited from earlier Mesoamerican cultures (particularly the Maya and Zapotec), consists of two interlocking cycles: the xiuhpohualli (365-day solar year, 18 months of 20 days plus 5 dangerous "empty days") and the tonalpohualli (260-day ritual calendar, used for divination, naming ceremonies and scheduling religious events). The two calendars mesh like interlocking gears, completing a full cycle (the 52-year "Calendar Round" or xiuhmolpilli) every 52 years -- a period as significant to the Aztecs as a century is to us. At the end of each 52-year cycle, there is existential anxiety: the world might end if the gods are not appeased. The New Fire Ceremony (Toxiuhmolpilia) -- the extinguishing of all fires followed by drilling new fire on the chest of a sacrificial victim -- marks the beginning of each new 52-year cycle and the world's renewal.
1428 – 1521 The Aztec cosmos -- five suns and the end of the world Aztec cosmology holds that the current world is the Fifth Sun -- the fourth previous worlds having been destroyed by catastrophe (flood, wind, rain of fire, jaguar). Each sun is created by the sacrifice of a god; the Fifth Sun (Nahui Ollin, "4 Movement") is created at Teotihuacan when two gods throw themselves into a bonfire to become the sun and moon. The current sun will end in earthquakes. This cosmology drives the urgency of sacrifice: the sun must be fed human blood to complete its daily journey; if the feeding stops, the sun will fail to rise and the world will end in darkness and monsters. The 52-year Calendar Round is the existential moment -- the New Fire Ceremony either renews the world or fails to. This is not mere metaphor for the Mexica: it is the literal mechanism of the universe, and the performance of sacrifice is what prevents the apocalypse.
1428 – 1521 The Aztec empire -- an assessment The Aztec empire at its peak (c.1500-1519) is a remarkable human achievement: a complex, literate, artistically sophisticated state with compulsory education, an efficient tribute economy, an advanced agricultural system, a rich literary and philosophical tradition, and a cosmological framework of great intellectual ambition. It is also a state built on systematic violence -- the Flower Wars, the tributary demands, the human sacrifice, and the terror that maintains compliance. Both of these things are true simultaneously. The Spanish who destroy it are not liberators (they impose their own system of forced labour, cultural destruction and epidemic) but they are also not lying when they describe the sacrificial system with horror. Modern Mexican national identity navigates this complexity with varying success -- simultaneously claiming the Aztec heritage as a source of pride and the Spanish conquest as a trauma. The Aztec empire remains one of the most consequential civilisations in human history -- not despite its destruction but partly because of it.
1428 – 1521 The Aztec sources -- what survived the burning The sources for Aztec history are a complex web of survivals, destructions and post-conquest reconstructions. Pre-conquest pictographic codices: only about 15 survive (the Codex Borgia, Codex Mendoza, Codex Borbonicus and others), having mostly escaped the 1529 burning ordered by Bishop Zumárraga. The most important post-conquest sources: Fray Bernardino de Sahagún's Florentine Codex (1545-1590) -- 12 volumes compiled from interviews with indigenous informants, the most comprehensive source for Aztec culture; the works of indigenous historians Fernando Alva Ixtlilxochitl and Alvarado Tezozomoc; Hernán Cortés's letters to Charles V; and Bernal Díaz del Castillo's Historia verdadera de la conquista de la Nueva España (written in old age, published 1632). Each source has its biases -- the Spanish want to justify conquest; the indigenous scholars want to preserve culture but within a colonial framework. The truth lies in the critical reading of all of them together.
1428 – 1521 The Flowery Wars -- controlled conflict for sacrifice The Xochiyaoyotl ("Flowery Wars" or "Flower Wars") are a distinctive institution of Aztec warfare -- arranged battles between the Triple Alliance and neighbouring states (particularly Tlaxcala, Cholula and Huexotzinco) fought primarily to capture prisoners for sacrifice rather than to conquer territory. Both sides agree to the combat; both sides take and sacrifice prisoners. The system serves multiple purposes: it provides a steady supply of sacrificial victims; it trains soldiers; it maintains a state of permanent low-level conflict that keeps the military ready; and it keeps potentially dangerous neighbours in a state of ritual warfare rather than full rebellion. The Flower Wars have been described by historians as both a genuine religious institution and a cynical political tool for intimidating subject peoples. The fact that Tlaxcala is never conquered -- remaining an unconquered enclave within the empire -- is either a deliberate policy choice (to maintain the Flower War supply) or evidence of Tlaxcalan military effectiveness. Both may be true.
1428 – 1521 The Spanish -- why 500 men destroy an empire The Spanish conquest of the Aztec empire is one of history's most debated events -- how does a force of 508 soldiers destroy a state controlling millions? The standard answers: military technology (guns, horses, steel armour, dogs -- though these are less decisive than traditionally claimed; indigenous weaponry is effective and the Spanish are outnumbered 1,000:1 at key moments); smallpox (the most important single factor -- killing Cuitláhuac, weakening the defence of Tenochtitlan); indigenous alliances (the Tlaxcalans, Texcocans and hundreds of other groups provide the majority of the fighting force); political opportunity (a tribute empire held together by force, whose subject peoples have strong reasons to rebel when given the chance); and the psychological disruption of an impossible, unprecedented event (bearded strangers arriving by sea in the Year One Reed). No single factor explains the conquest; it is the combination that makes it possible -- and even so, it nearly fails on the Noche Triste.
1428 – 1521 The Templo Mayor -- the navel of the universe The Templo Mayor (Huei Teocalli, "Great Temple") at the centre of Tenochtitlan is the most sacred structure in the Aztec world -- a double pyramid approximately 60 metres high, with twin temples on top dedicated to Huitzilopochtli (south, painted red for blood) and Tlaloc (north, painted blue for water and rain). It is rebuilt and enlarged seven times during the empire's history (each new pyramid enclosing the previous one). The Templo Mayor represents the sacred mountain Coatepec (birthplace of Huitzilopochtli) and the axis mundi -- the centre of the universe where earth, sky and underworld meet. The 1978-2003 excavations of the Templo Mayor site (triggered by the accidental discovery of the Coyolxauhqui Stone by electricity workers in February 1978) reveal eight successive building phases, thousands of offerings, and a tzompantli (skull rack) containing at least 676 human skulls -- the tip of an enormous archaeological iceberg still being excavated.
1428 – 1521 The Tlatelolco market -- commerce of the world The Tlatelolco market (tianguis), operating in the northern quarter of Tenochtitlan, is by any standard one of the greatest markets of the ancient world -- a permanent daily market serving some 60,000 buyers and sellers, with a different specialist market on each of five days of the 20-day month cycle. Cortés writes to Charles V: "There is one square twice as large as that of Salamanca, with arcades all around where more than 60,000 people come each day to buy and sell... every kind of merchandise that the world offers is found there." The range of goods: food (hundreds of species of plants and animals), textiles (cotton cloaks, feather-work, embroidery), ceramics, obsidian tools, gold and silver work, medicinal plants, slaves, incense, rubber balls, pigments, paper, tools, and services (barbers, porters, scribes). A dedicated judiciary (market judges in a court at the market's centre) adjudicates disputes. Bernal Díaz, who sees it firsthand, says he cannot adequately describe it.
1428 – 1521 The Triple Alliance -- the engine of empire The Triple Alliance (Excan Tlahtoloyan, "Three-Place Rulership"), founded c.1428 between Tenochtitlan, Texcoco and Tlacopan after the defeat of Azcapotzalco, is the political framework of the Aztec empire. It is not a conquest state in the Roman sense but a tribute-extraction system: subject city-states (altepetl) pay regular tribute in goods (cotton, cacao, feathers, jade, gold, obsidian, foodstuffs) while maintaining their local rulers, customs and gods. The system is maintained by the constant threat of military force -- the Mexica army is the most formidable in Mesoamerica. Tenochtitlan dominates the alliance (receiving 2/5 of tribute) alongside Texcoco (2/5) and Tlacopan (1/5). By 1519 the alliance controls some 400-500 subject polities. The ideological architect of the system is the cihuacoatl Tlacaelel, who redefines the Mexica's role as the chosen people of the sun, obligated to feed the sun with human blood through warfare and sacrifice.
1428 – 1521 The altepetl -- the city-state foundation The altepetl (literally "water-mountain," the standard Nahuatl term for a city-state) is the fundamental unit of political organisation in Aztec Mesoamerica -- the autonomous polity with its own tlatoani, its own patron deity, its own market, its own land and its own identity. The Aztec empire is not a territorial state with provinces but a network of altepetl paying tribute -- some 400-500 city-states whose internal organisation, rulers, customs and gods are left intact as long as tribute flows and military service is rendered. The altepetl is divided into calpolli (wards or clans) -- the social units that hold land collectively, maintain the local temple and supply warriors for campaigns. Understanding the altepetl is essential for understanding both the empire's structure and the conquest: Cortés does not conquer "the Aztecs" -- he defeats the Triple Alliance and allies with dozens of altepetl who join him against their Mexica overlords.
1428 – 1521 The chinampas -- gardens on the lake The chinampas ("floating gardens" -- though they are not truly floating but anchored to the lake bed) are one of the most ingenious agricultural systems ever developed -- raised rectangular beds built up from alternating layers of aquatic vegetation, mud and organic matter in the shallow margins of Lake Texcoco, producing some of the most fertile agricultural land in Mesoamerica. A mature chinampa plot (typically 2.5-10 metres wide, 20-100 metres long) is surrounded by water channels providing constant irrigation; the willow trees planted around the edges bind the soil and shade the channels. Multiple crops per year are possible. The chinampas feed Tenochtitlan's 200,000+ population from a network of plots extending across 9,000 hectares of lake surface. They also provide the land on which the city itself expands -- the entire island of Tenochtitlan is substantially an artificial construction built up from chinampa technique. The remaining chinampas at Xochimilco (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) are the last surviving example.
1428 – 1521 The macehualtin -- ordinary people of the empire The macehualtin (singular: macehualli, "commoners" or "those who have earned merit") constitute the majority of the Aztec population -- farmers, craftsmen, soldiers, traders, servants and labourers who sustain the empire through their labour and military service. A macehualli family typically holds its land collectively through the calpolli (ward) rather than individually; the calpolli elders assign fields, collect tribute and adjudicate local disputes. The commoner's daily life is extensively documented in the Florentine Codex: rising before dawn to tend the milpa (corn field) or to travel to the market; eating two meals a day (maize in various forms -- tortillas, tamales, atole porridge -- plus beans, squash, chillies, insects, occasional meat); attending school (both sons and daughters are educated); and fulfilling the rotating labour and military obligations that are the macehualli's contribution to the state. The macehualtin are neither slaves (there is a separate slave class) nor free in the modern sense -- they are subjects of the altepetl with defined rights and obligations.
1428 – 1521 The pochteca -- merchants of empire The pochteca are a hereditary guild of long-distance merchants who operate at the intersection of commerce and espionage -- travelling throughout Mesoamerica (and beyond the empire's borders) to trade in luxury goods, gather intelligence and sometimes trigger military intervention on behalf of the Triple Alliance. They are a quasi-noble class: wealthy, organised in their own guild structure, worshipping their own patron deity (Yacatecuhtli, "Lord Vanguard"), burying their dead with elaborate ceremony. They travel in large caravans with porters (there are no wheeled vehicles or draft animals in Mesoamerica), armed with weapons and operating sometimes under diplomatic cover, sometimes as agents of imperial expansion. The goods they trade -- jade, quetzal feathers, cacao, obsidian, gold, cotton cloaks, turquoise -- are the luxury economy of Aztec civilisation. Sahagún's Florentine Codex devotes an entire book to their customs, routes and ceremonies.
1428 – 1521 The tlacuilo -- scribes of the painted books The tlacuiloque (singular: tlacuilo, "painter-writer") are the scribes who produce the Aztec codices -- specialists trained in the calmecac (elite school) to paint the pictographic records of history, tribute, ritual and astrology that constitute the Aztec documentary tradition. The codex is made from bark paper (amatl) or deer skin folded accordion-style; the images are painted in mineral pigments with hair brushes; the standard colours (red, blue, green, yellow, black) carry specific iconographic meanings. The tlacuilo works within a strict convention system -- standardised figures, colours and symbols that a trained reader can interpret -- but also exercises considerable artistic skill in the quality and arrangement of the images. When Bishop Zumárraga burns the codices in 1529, he is destroying not just historical records but an entire literary tradition that requires specialised education to read -- a tradition that cannot be reconstructed once the trained readers are gone.
1428 – 1521 The tlatoani -- the speaking ruler The tlatoani (plural: tlatoque, "speaker/ruler") is the supreme political authority of an altepetl (city-state) -- a position combining the roles of king, high priest and military commander. The title literally means "one who speaks" -- eloquent speech being the mark of legitimate authority in Aztec culture. The tlatoani of Tenochtitlan is simultaneously the leader of the Triple Alliance and the chosen representative of Huitzilopochtli on earth. He is elected by a council of senior nobles and priests (not hereditary in the European sense, though candidates must be of royal lineage). His court ceremonial is extraordinarily elaborate: he eats alone behind a screen; visitors approach barefoot and with eyes downcast; he changes his costume four times daily; he is carried in a litter and his feet may not touch the ground in public. The tlatoani is simultaneously very powerful (absolute military and judicial authority) and constrained (by the council of nobles, the high priests, and the unwritten conventions of Aztec political culture).
1428 – 1521 Tlacaelel -- the architect of empire Tlacaelel (c.1397-1487), cihuacoatl ("woman-snake" -- the second-highest office in Tenochtitlan) under three successive tlatoque, is the most important Aztec political figure that most people have never heard of. He serves under Itzcoatl, Moctezuma I and Axayacatl for approximately 60 years, declining the position of tlatoani three times when offered it. He redesigns Aztec religious ideology -- ordering the burning of existing codices and rewriting history to make the Mexica the chosen people of the sun; institutionalising the Flower Wars as a religious-military system; and defining the role of the tlatoani as the sun's earthly representative. Without Tlacaelel the Aztec imperial project is inconceivable. He dies at approximately 90, having shaped the ideological framework that sustains the empire for another 34 years after his death.
1428 – 1521 Tlaloc -- the ancient rain god Tlaloc is one of the oldest deities in Mesoamerica -- a rain god worshipped at Teotihuacan and throughout the region for over 2,000 years before the Aztec empire. He is the god of rain, water, lightning, agriculture and fertility -- simultaneously the source of life-giving rain and terrifying lightning. His physical appearance is distinctive: large goggle eyes, fanged mouth, dripping water. His temple on the north side of the Templo Mayor (painted blue) is co-equal with Huitzilopochtli's south temple -- rain and sun being the two fundamental requirements of agricultural life. Tlaloc's sacrificial victims are primarily children, whose tears are believed to invoke rain -- a practice that particularly horrified the Spanish. The paradise of Tlalocan (where those who drown or die of water-related illness go) is depicted as a lush garden of abundance. Tlaloc's antiquity and universality -- he is found in one form or another in virtually every Mesoamerican culture -- make him the most deeply rooted deity in the Aztec pantheon.
1428 – 1521 Tlaxcala -- the republic that refused Tlaxcala is the great counter-example in Aztec imperial history -- the one significant polity in central Mexico that the Triple Alliance never conquers, despite repeated attempts. The Tlaxcalan confederation of four city-states (Tepeticpac, Ocotelolco, Tizatlan and Quiahuiztlan) maintains its independence through fierce military resistance, its mountainous terrain, and possibly a deliberate Aztec policy of maintaining the Flower War supply. When Cortés arrives in 1519 and defeats the Tlaxcalans in several battles, they make the pragmatic calculation that the Spanish are a tool against their existential enemy. The Tlaxcalan-Spanish alliance is the conquest's decisive factor. In return for their service, the Tlaxcalans receive: exemption from tribute, the right to bear arms, special legal status and land grants. The Lienzo de Tlaxcala (a post-conquest indigenous pictorial history) celebrates the Tlaxcalan role in the conquest from a perspective entirely different from the Spanish sources. Tlaxcala remains proud of this history to this day.
1428 – 1521 Women in Aztec society -- the other half of empire Aztec women's lives are extensively documented in the Florentine Codex and other sources -- more so than in many ancient cultures. Women of the commoner class spin, weave, cook, trade in markets, raise children and serve the gods as midwives and medical practitioners. Elite women manage estates, serve as temple priestesses (cihuatlamacazque) and exercise considerable domestic authority. The cihuatlamacazque who serve in the temples of Toci and other female deities have religious authority comparable to male priests. Women who die in childbirth achieve the same afterlife as warriors killed in battle -- joining the sun in its afternoon journey across the western sky. The highest-status women (wives of tlatoque) hold political influence through their sons and through the management of palace economies. The Aztec gender system is not egalitarian by modern standards but gives women defined spheres of real authority and religious significance.
1440 – 1521 Imperial expansion -- the eagle warriors march The Aztec empire expands through a combination of military conquest, diplomatic marriage, trade pressure and the calculated use of terror. The empire reaches its maximum extent under Moctezuma I (1440-1469) and Ahuitzotl (1486-1502), extending from the Gulf coast to the Pacific, from central Mexico to the borders of modern Guatemala. The military engine is formidable: a standing professional officer class (distinguished by elaborate feathered costumes -- Eagle Warriors, Jaguar Warriors) supplemented by a mass levy of commoner soldiers (macehualtin). Aztec weapons -- obsidian-edged clubs (macuahuitl), atlatl (spearthrower), bows and arrows, shields -- are effective for Mesoamerican warfare. The strategic logic is tribute extraction rather than cultural assimilation: conquered peoples pay in goods, maintain their own rulers and gods, and provide military service when required. Rebellion is punished by exemplary violence.
1487 The great sacrifice of 1487 -- the Templo Mayor dedication The dedication of the expanded Templo Mayor in 1487 under Ahuitzotl is recorded as one of the largest single sacrificial events in pre-Columbian history. The sources (primarily Spanish colonial) record 20,000 victims sacrificed over four days -- a figure so large it has been questioned by modern scholars, who suggest the real number may be in the hundreds or low thousands. Even at the lower estimates, it represents a deliberate display of power directed at the entire empire: subject rulers are invited to witness the ceremony, to see the scale of Aztec religious commitment and military capacity, and to draw the appropriate conclusions about the cost of rebellion. The sacrifice is simultaneously a religious act (feeding the sun), a political demonstration (displaying the fruits of imperial warfare), and an economic statement (the sacrificial victims represent the tribute extracted from the empire's conquest). The debate over the true scale of Aztec sacrifice is one of the most contested in Mesoamerican scholarship.
1502 – 1520 Moctezuma II -- the emperor at the apex Moctezuma II (c.1466-1520), ninth tlatoani of Tenochtitlan, rules at the absolute apex of Aztec power -- presiding over the most extensive empire in Mesoamerican history, the largest city in the Western Hemisphere, and the most elaborate court in the New World. He is simultaneously the empire's most powerful and most unlucky ruler: he inherits a perfect system and watches it destroyed. His reign sees the final territorial expansion of the empire, the maximum development of court ceremonial (he eats alone, behind a screen, served from golden vessels; no one may look at him directly; visitors approach barefoot), and the arrival of Hernán Cortés in 1519. His response to Cortés -- initially hospitality, then captivity, then his unclear death -- remains the most debated series of decisions in New World history.
1519 – 1521 Hernán Cortés arrives -- the world changes Hernán Cortés lands on the coast of Mexico in February 1519 with 508 soldiers, 16 horses, 14 cannon and 13 muskets -- a force that seems laughably small against an empire of millions. His achievement is not primarily military but diplomatic: he exploits the deep resentments of subject peoples (particularly the Tlaxcalans), the political divisions within the Triple Alliance, and possibly the psychological disruption caused by the arrival of bearded strangers in the Year One Reed (the predicted return year of the feathered serpent god Quetzalcoatl). Within two years he transforms a diplomatic visit into a conquest. The allies without whom Cortés would certainly have failed -- the Tlaxcalans, Texcocans and dozens of other subject peoples -- are the real story of the Spanish conquest, as much as any European military advantage.
1519 – 1521 Tlaxcala -- the empire's greatest enemy becomes its destroyer Tlaxcala, an independent confederation of four city-states in the mountains east of the Valley of Mexico, is the Aztec empire's most formidable unconquered enemy -- fighting the Flower Wars with the Triple Alliance for decades without being conquered. When Cortés arrives in 1519, the Tlaxcalans initially fight him fiercely (and nearly destroy his force), then -- recognising an opportunity -- ally with him against their Aztec overlords. The Tlaxcalan alliance is the single most important factor in the Spanish conquest: Cortés's Tlaxcalan allies provide the mass of infantry for the siege of Tenochtitlan, the carriers for the brigantine boats, the intelligence about Aztec defences, and the motivated warriors who constitute perhaps 80% of the actual fighting force. Without Tlaxcala there is no conquest. This history is genuinely complex: Tlaxcala considers itself a liberator of subject peoples, not a collaborator with foreign invaders -- a perspective that Mexican national historiography has been slow to acknowledge.
1520 The Noche Triste -- the terrible night The Noche Triste ("Sad Night"), 30 June 1520, is the most catastrophic moment of the Spanish conquest -- the night when the Mexica drive the Spanish and their Tlaxcalan allies from Tenochtitlan, killing perhaps half of Cortés's force as they flee across the causeway. Cortés has been holding Moctezuma II captive in his own palace (an extraordinarily audacious strategy that works until it doesn't); when Moctezuma is killed (by the Spanish, by his own people, or in the chaos -- accounts differ) and the Mexica revolt, the Spanish are trapped. The escape across the causeway is desperate: soldiers drown under the weight of gold they refuse to abandon; the bodies of the dead and the horses of the cavalry pile up in the gaps cut in the causeway. Cortés, reaching dry land, weeps under a great tree (the "Tree of the Sad Night," still standing in Mexico City). The Spanish retreat to Tlaxcala to regroup.
1521 – 1600 After the conquest -- New Spain rises The destruction of Tenochtitlan in 1521 is not the end of the story but the beginning of a new and terrible chapter. The Spanish build Mexico City directly on the ruins of Tenochtitlan -- the Templo Mayor is demolished, its stones used in the new cathedral. Cuauhtémoc, the last tlatoani, is tortured (his feet burned to make him reveal the location of hidden gold) and eventually hanged in 1525. The encomienda system enslaves the surviving indigenous population; the Inquisition burns the codices; epidemic disease does the rest. Yet Aztec culture does not vanish -- it hybridises. Indigenous communities maintain their languages, their agricultural systems, their oral traditions. The Virgin of Guadalupe, appearing to the indigenous convert Juan Diego in 1531 on a hill sacred to the goddess Tonantzin, is the defining moment of Mexican syncretism. The civilisation is destroyed; the culture endures.
1521 – 1600 Cuauhtémoc -- the last eagle Cuauhtémoc ("Descending Eagle," c.1496-1525) is the last tlatoani of Tenochtitlan -- the young ruler who takes power after Cuitláhuac dies of smallpox and leads the defence of the city through the 75-day siege of 1521. He is approximately 25 years old when he becomes tlatoani; he is approximately 26 when the city falls and he is captured attempting to flee by canoe. His capture ends the Aztec empire. Cortés has him tortured (his feet burned over hot coals, to force him to reveal the location of Moctezuma's treasure), then keeps him as a captive for four years, then has him hanged in 1525 on dubious charges of conspiracy during the Honduras expedition. His dignity throughout captivity and torture -- reportedly telling his companion "Am I now in a bed of roses?" when the companion cried out from the pain -- makes him the supreme symbol of Aztec resistance. He is the national hero of Mexico, his statue prominent in Mexico City's Paseo de la Reforma.
1521 Smallpox -- the invisible conquistador The smallpox epidemic (cocoliztli, "pestilence") that reaches Tenochtitlan in late 1520 -- introduced by a slave in the army of Pánfilo de Narváez, sent to arrest Cortés -- is arguably the decisive factor in the Spanish conquest. The Mexica have no immunity to Variola major; the disease moves through the city's dense population with terrifying speed, killing perhaps 30-50% of the population in weeks. Among the dead is Cuitláhuac, who succeeds Moctezuma as tlatoani and leads the Noche Triste victory -- dying of smallpox barely 80 days after taking power. The epidemic weakens Tenochtitlan's defensive capacity at the crucial moment when Cortés returns with his rebuilt army. The demographic catastrophe continues for decades: successive epidemic waves (1520, 1531, 1545-1548, 1576-1581) reduce the indigenous population of central Mexico from an estimated 25 million to perhaps 1 million by 1600 -- the greatest demographic collapse in human history.
1521 – 2026 The Aztec legacy -- what endures The legacy of the Aztec empire is everywhere in modern Mexico and beyond. The Mexican flag bears the Aztec founding symbol (eagle on cactus devouring serpent). Mexico City is built on Tenochtitlan -- the Zócalo (main square) is the former site of the Templo Mayor, whose ruins are excavated beneath the adjacent buildings. Nahuatl is still spoken by 1.7 million people. The agricultural systems (particularly the chinampas at Xochimilco) still function. The foods (chocolate, tomatoes, chillies, avocados, maize, vanilla, squash) that define world cuisine come from the Aztec and Mesoamerican agricultural tradition. The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) blends Aztec attitudes to death with Catholic All Souls Day. The 1968 Tlatelolco massacre -- in which the Mexican government kills student protesters in the same square where the Aztec market stood -- connects modern political violence to a landscape of ancient memory. Aztec civilisation is not ancient history in Mexico; it is the living substrate of the present.
1521 The fall of Tenochtitlan -- 13 August 1521 The siege of Tenochtitlan (May-August 1521) is the decisive military operation of the Spanish conquest -- a 75-day siege combining naval assault (with brigantines built in Tlaxcala and portaged to Lake Texcoco), systematic destruction of the causeways and water supply, and assault by an allied force estimated at 100,000-200,000 indigenous warriors alongside Cortés's Spanish troops. The Mexica, led by the young tlatoani Cuauhtémoc (who takes power after Cuitláhuac dies of smallpox), resist with extraordinary ferocity -- fighting street by street, filling in the causeways the Spanish destroy, using the Spanish's own brigantines against them. But smallpox (introduced by a slave in Cortés's advance force) has already killed perhaps a third of the city's population. On 13 August 1521, Cuauhtémoc attempts to escape by canoe and is captured. The city -- already a charnel house -- is in ruins. The Aztec empire is over.
