325Council of NicaeaIn 325 AD, Constantine convenes the first ecumenical council of the Christian church at Nicaea (modern Iznik, Turkey). Some 300 bishops attend. The council condemns Arianism — the belief that Christ is subordinate to God the Father — and produces the Nicene Creed, the foundational statement of Christian orthodoxy still recited in churches today. Constantine chairs sessions personally, wearing purple and gold, presiding over a theological dispute he barely understands. Church and state are now inextricably linked.
