He received an honorary Academy Award in 2000 for lifetime achievement. He remained active in filmmaking until his death.

2016Battle of Mosul BeginsIraqi-led coalition launches offensive against ISILIraqi government forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition and Kurdish Peshmerga, launched a major offensive to retake Mosul from the Islamic State. It was the largest military operation in Iraq since the 2003 invasion. The battle for the city would continue into 2017.
