2013Microsoft acquires Nokia's mobile division for €5.44 billionMicrosoft acquires Nokia's mobile phone and services division for €5.44 billion — announced September 2013, completed April 2014. Stephen Elop returns to Microsoft. The deal fails catastrophically: Microsoft writes off €7.6 billion on the acquisition in 2015 and lays off 7,800 Nokia employees. The Nokia mobile brand — once the most recognised consumer brand in the world — is effectively dead. Nokia retains its patents and network infrastructure business.
