2011R.E.M. disbands -- the most dignified exit in rockOn 21 September 2011, R.E.M. posts a statement on their website: 'To our fans and friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. What's next for each of us? That we do not know.' There is no acrimony, no farewell tour, no contractual dispute. Stipe, Buck, Mills and Berry (who had left 14 years earlier) issue individual statements of warmth and respect. The dissolution is unanimously described as the most mature and dignified breakup in rock history.
