• 2003 Rose Revolution Protests force Shevardnadze from power in Georgia Weeks of protest over a disputed parliamentary election culminated in demonstrators, led by Mikheil Saakashvili, storming the Georgian parliament carrying roses. President Eduard Shevardnadze resigned the following day. Saakashvili won the presidency in January 2004 and pursued a pro-Western course.
• 2003 Rugby World Cup final England beat Australia with a last-minute drop goal England beat host nation Australia 20-17 in the final at Sydney, with Jonny Wilkinson kicking a drop goal in the last minute of extra time. It was England's first Rugby World Cup and the first won by a team from the northern hemisphere.
