2001Code Red worm spreads across the internetSelf-replicating attack hits web serversIn July 2001 the Code Red worm exploited a flaw in Microsoft's IIS web server software, infecting hundreds of thousands of machines within days and defacing pages with the text Hacked by Chinese. It also directed denial-of-service traffic at a White House address. It was among the first worms to draw sustained mainstream coverage.
2001G8 summit protests in GenoaProtester Carlo Giuliani shot deadThe G8 summit in Genoa in July 2001 drew around 200,000 anti-globalisation demonstrators and heavy policing. On 20 July the protester Carlo Giuliani was shot dead by a carabiniere, the first fatality at such a protest in Western Europe. A night raid on a school used by activists led to convictions of police years later.
