• 1878 – 1949 Bill Robinson (1878-1949) American tap dancer known as Bojangles, famous for his stair dance and his films with Shirley Temple.
• 1949 Round Table Conference agreement on Indonesia The Netherlands agrees at The Hague to transfer sovereignty to the United States of Indonesia, ending four years of war. The transfer followed on 27 December.
• 1949 Nathuram Godse executed Gandhis assassin is hanged at Ambala Central Jail together with co-conspirator Narayan Apte.
• 1949 Petersberg Agreement Chancellor Adenauer and the Allied High Commissioners agree to scale back dismantling of German industry, a first step towards West German sovereignty.
• 1949 Bill Robinson dies in New York Bill Robinson dies aged 71.
• 1949 Constituent Assembly adopts the Constitution of India The Constitution drafted under B. R. Ambedkar is adopted. It came into force on 26 January 1950, and 26 November is now Constitution Day.
