1857 – 1935 Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935) Died 19 September 1935, aged 78 Tsiolkovsky was a Russian pioneer of astronautics who worked out the rocket equation and the theory of multistage rockets. His work later inspired the Soviet space programme.
