1843 – 1914Bertha von Suttner (1843-1914)Died 21 June 1914, aged 71An Austrian writer and pacifist, von Suttner authored the influential anti-war novel Lay Down Your Arms and helped inspire Alfred Nobel to create a peace prize. In 1905 she became the first woman awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She died just weeks before the war she had spent decades warning against.
