1840 – 1913August Bebel (1840-1913)Died 13 August 1913, aged 73Bebel co-founded the Social Democratic Party of Germany and led it for decades, building it into the largest socialist party in Europe. He was a longtime member of the Reichstag and a leading theorist of the Second International. His death removed the most prominent figure of German social democracy before the First World War.
1913Second Balkan War and recovery of EdirneThe Second Balkan War (June-August 1913) breaks out when the Balkan allies fight each other over the spoils of the First Balkan War. Bulgaria attacks Serbia and Greece; Romania and the Ottomans take advantage. The Ottoman army, under Enver Pasha, recaptures Edirne (Adrianople) -- the former Ottoman capital, lost in the First Balkan War. The recovery of Edirne is celebrated as a triumph, and Enver becomes a hero. The Treaty of Bucharest (August 1913) establishes the post-Balkan War borders. The Ottomans retain only eastern Thrace (with Edirne) in Europe -- a strip of territory they hold to this day.

The war lasted just over a month and ended in a decisive defeat for Bulgaria. It left Serbia and Greece considerably enlarged and set the stage for further Balkan instability before the First World War.

The settlement redrew the map of the Balkans and left Bulgaria embittered, pushing it toward alliance with the Central Powers in the First World War.
1913 – 1992Menachem Begin (1913-1992)Died 9 March 1992, aged 78Menachem Begin served as Prime Minister of Israel from 1977 to 1983 and signed the 1979 peace treaty with Egypt, for which he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Anwar Sadat. He had earlier led the Irgun militant group during the British Mandate period. He withdrew from public life after leaving office.
