1862 – 1911Pyotr Stolypin (1862-1911)Died 18 September 1911, aged 49Stolypin served as Prime Minister of the Russian Empire, pursuing land reforms intended to create a class of independent peasant farmers. He was shot by an assassin at the Kiev Opera House on 14 September 1911 and died four days later. His death removed one of the last reform-minded figures from the tsarist government before the revolutions to come.
1911 – 1912Italo-Turkish War -- Libya lostItaly invades Libya (then the Ottoman provinces of Tripolitania and Cyrenaica) in September 1911, seeking a colonial empire in North Africa. The Ottoman Empire, fighting its first major war since 1878, resists more effectively than expected -- Mustafa Kemal serves here as a young officer -- but cannot reinforce Libya across the Mediterranean. The Treaty of Lausanne (October 1912) cedes Libya and the Dodecanese islands to Italy. The loss of Libya is the last Ottoman territory in Africa. The war also demonstrates Ottoman military weakness to its Balkan neighbours, who immediately form the Balkan League and attack.
1911 – 1985Konstantin Chernenko (1911-1985)Died 10 March 1985, aged 73Chernenko led the Soviet Union as General Secretary of the Communist Party from February 1984 until his death. His brief, ailing tenure was followed immediately by the rise of Mikhail Gorbachev. He died in Moscow on 10 March 1985.

He landed in Pasadena, California, on 5 November 1911 after numerous crashes and repairs, arriving too late to claim the prize. His flight demonstrated that long-distance air travel across a continent was possible.
