1911 Agadir Crisis German gunboat diplomacy inflames Franco-German rivalry over Morocco Germany sent the gunboat Panther to the Moroccan port of Agadir on 1 July 1911 to challenge French control over Morocco. The move provoked a tense diplomatic standoff with France and Britain, pushing Europe closer to war. The crisis was resolved by a November 1911 accord giving France a protectorate over Morocco in exchange for territory in the French Congo.
