1862 – 1911Emilio Salgari (1862-1911)Died 25 April 1911, aged 48Salgari was a prolific Italian writer of adventure novels, best known for creating the pirate hero Sandokan. His swashbuckling tales were hugely popular in Italy and influenced generations of adventure fiction. Struggling financially despite his popularity, he died by suicide in Turin.

He entered Mosaic. He disliked the city and the bureaucracy and left within two years.
