1904Mother dies — Father Francis Morgan becomes guardianMabel Tolkien dies of diabetes on 14 November 1904, aged 34 — her health undermined, Tolkien always believed, by the stress of her family's rejection after her conversion. Ronald is 12; Hilary 10. Before her death, Mabel entrusts the boys to Father Francis Morgan, a Catholic priest and family friend. Morgan becomes one of the most important figures in Tolkien's life — a warm, generous father-figure who manages a small trust for the boys and supervises their education. Tolkien later wrote that his mother 'was a martyr indeed, and it is not to everybody that God grants so easy a way to his great gifts as he did to Hilary and myself, giving us a mother who killed herself with labour and trouble.'
