• 1871 Mont Cenis Tunnel opens Rail tunnel links France and Italy through the Alps The Fréjus Rail Tunnel through the Alps, commonly known as the Mont Cenis Tunnel, opened to traffic after fourteen years of construction, connecting France and Italy. At over 13 kilometres, it was the longest tunnel in the world at the time. It demonstrated new mechanical drilling techniques later used in other major tunnels.
