1858Treaty of Tientsin signedChina opens further ports to foreign trade after the Second Opium WarChina signed separate treaties with Russia, the United States, Britain, and France at Tianjin, ending the first phase of the Second Opium War. The agreements opened additional treaty ports, permitted foreign legations in Beijing, and legalized the opium trade. China's later refusal to fully implement the terms led to renewed fighting in 1860.
