His turbulent relationship with the writer George Sand became one of the era's best-known literary romances.
1857Utah War beginsUS federal troops march against Mormon settlersPresident James Buchanan ordered US Army troops to Utah Territory to suppress a reported rebellion by Mormon settlers and install a non-Mormon governor. The ensuing standoff between federal forces and the Nauvoo Legion militia produced skirmishes but little bloodshed before a negotiated settlement in 1858. It was one of the costliest peacetime military mobilizations in antebellum US history.
