He held professorships at the Royal School of Mines and, briefly, at the University of Edinburgh.
1854Battle of InkermanRussian assault on Allied siege lines repulsedRussian forces launched a major attack on Allied positions besieging Sevastopol but were repulsed after fierce close-quarters fighting in thick fog. The battle inflicted heavy casualties on both sides and ended Russian attempts to lift the siege by direct assault.
