1851Louis-Napoleon's coup d'étatPresident seizes absolute power in FranceOn 2 December 1851, President Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte dissolved the National Assembly and seized dictatorial power in a coup. A rigged plebiscite ratified his rule, and within a year he declared himself Emperor Napoleon III, founding the Second French Empire.
