1763 – 1848John Jacob Astor (1763-1848)Died 29 March 1848, aged 84German-born American merchant who made his fortune in the fur trade and in New York real estate. He was the richest person in the United States when he died. His bequest founded the Astor Library, later part of the New York Public Library.
