1770 – 1843Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843)Died 7 June 1843, aged 73Friedrich Hölderlin was a German lyric poet and the author of the novel Hyperion. He spent his last 36 years mentally ill in a tower in Tübingen, and his reputation grew greatly in the twentieth century.
1843 – 1844The Fruitlands experimentA utopian farmThe Alcotts join a utopian community at Harvard, Massachusetts, living on a strict vegan diet and refusing animal labour. It collapses within seven months. Louisa later satirises it in Transcendental Wild Oats.
1843Wairau AffrayFirst armed clash between Maori and British settlers in New ZealandA New Zealand Company party tried to arrest the Ngati Toa chiefs Te Rauparaha and Te Rangihaeata over a land dispute in the Wairau Valley. Twenty-two settlers and at least four Maori were killed, the first serious armed clash after the Treaty of Waitangi.
1843Marriage to Jenny von WestphalenWedding in KreuznachKarl Marx and Jenny von Westphalen married on June 19, 1843, in Bad Kreuznach. The couple would go on to have seven children, though only three survived to adulthood, as poverty and repeated exile took a heavy toll on the family. Jenny transcribed and edited many of Marx's manuscripts and shared in the hardships of his political persecution throughout their lives.
