1842Peel reintroduces income taxBritain revives a peacetime income taxPrime Minister Robert Peel's budget brought back income tax, at seven pence in the pound on incomes over £150. The tax was meant to be temporary and paid for cuts to tariffs. It has remained in force in Britain ever since.
