1841Straits Convention signed in LondonGreat powers agree to close the Bosphorus and Dardanelles to foreign warshipsOn 13 July 1841, Britain, France, Austria, Prussia, Russia and the Ottoman Empire signed the Straits Convention in London, reaffirming the closure of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits to all foreign warships during peacetime. The treaty settled the Eastern Question crisis that had followed the Russo-Ottoman alliance and the Egyptian-Ottoman conflict of the late 1830s. It replaced the earlier Treaty of Hunkar Iskelesi, reducing Russia's unilateral influence over the straits.
