1841British forces occupy Hong Kong IslandFlag raised at Possession Point during the First Opium WarOn 26 January 1841, Commodore Sir Gordon Bremer took formal possession of Hong Kong Island for Britain following the Convention of Chuenpi with Qing China. The move came amid the First Opium War and laid the foundation for the British colony of Hong Kong. China did not ratify the Chuenpi agreement, and fighting continued until the Treaty of Nanking in 1842.
