1841Province of Canada formedUpper and Lower Canada unite under one legislatureThe Act of Union 1840 came into force on 10 February 1841, merging Upper Canada and Lower Canada into a single Province of Canada. The new province had one legislature with equal representation from Canada West and Canada East, despite Lower Canada's larger population. The union aimed to assimilate French Canadians following the rebellions of 1837-38.
