1839Amistad slave ship revoltEnslaved Africans seize control of a Spanish schoonerEnslaved Africans led by Sengbe Pieh rose up and took control of the schooner La Amistad off the coast of Cuba, killing the captain and the cook. The ship eventually came ashore near Long Island, New York, where the US Navy seized it and the Africans were jailed pending trial. The case became a landmark in the American abolitionist movement.
